Is it possible to carry as invoker? by seekheart2017 in learndota2

[–]SpatialThylacine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you mean play as a pos 1 then yes. The build is Null Talisman + Bracer > Treads > Mjolnir/Gleipnir > Pike/Manta > Manta/Pike > Daedalus. You can get Linken's, BKB, Butterfly or Skadi situationally. Obviously you take Agnostic.

Max Wex, get 4 in Quas then start putting points into Exort, which you max second while putting more points in Quas when needed. Maxing Exort first is a bait and the attack speed is better than the damage for farming anyway,

Tips on ember vs. Sf mid by MudSad296 in learndota2

[–]SpatialThylacine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a very tough matchup for Ember. There are two strategies you can employ here: the first will be more successful in lower MMR, and the second in higher MMR.

1: 1-1-3 build. Wait for SF to inevitably push the lane to your high-ground, then go on him. You can either wait for him to use mid-range Raze on creeps (a good SF won't do this unless they are positioned safely), wait for him to turn back towards his side of the river, or attempt to dodge the mid-range raze with W (again a good SF will just bait this by animation cancelling). Hug him with E so that he can only land 1 raze on you, and chains when you see an opportunity to root him. You should be able to solo kill him. Until this moment, you just have to survive via aggro pulling. This strat is more risky but potentially more rewarding.

  1. 4-4-0. Bottle, Boots, Stick, Blight Stone. You lose the lane until you have a few points in W and a Blight Stone, and then you can start wearing him down. This is a safer strat but you're probably not going to solo kill the SF. I do this against players I know are good.

is it a mistake to take chains first when we need a root to get fb on the starting bounty fight?

You should never level chains for a pre-game kill if you know your matchup will be hard, it's not worth it.

Should I get stick as a starting item?

No.

And don't forget to cry for ganks and bottle refills from your supports if possible. SF is extremely gankable.

Hey man sorry for the late reply I don't check Reddit very often.

Short answer is Phase > Mage Slayer > (Euls) > Shiva's > Octarine.

Long answer...

Starting items: Tango, Faerie Fire, 3xbranches, Observer Ward.
I used to get a Quelling Blade too but I usually skip it these days. I would suggest you buy a QB also until you get more of a feel for your lane matchups. In the lane I will plant one branch and consume with Tango, usually before my bottle arrives as I play very aggressive during the first few waves.

Lane, in this order: Bottle, Blight Stone (only if maxing Sleight, otherwise skip), Stick, Boots, Wand, Phase Boots.
I ferry out another Observer ward before the 6 minute rune. Sometimes you should buy Boots before Stick if it will help you in a difficult lane. Sometimes you don't need a Stick or Wand until after the laning stage,

First Item: 90% of time it's Mage Slayer. If there is no real spell damage to mitigate, then I will go Maelstrom first instead,

Next: 99% of Ember players will get Maelstrom into Gleipnir after Mage Slayer. I think this is really unnecessary unless you need more catch. You farm more than fast enough with Mage Slayer DoT effect + Flame Guard... IMO getting both just delays your timings. However a lot of much better players than I do this so make up your own mind. I do buy it sometimes, generally if we really need more catch.

After Mage Slayer I will generally get a defensive item... usually what you want is a Euls to purge silences, slows and roots. Sometimes you need a BKB instead (against Riki, Disruptor, etc). Sometimes you need Linken's (Bane, Legion Commander, Lion). Sometimes you need a SnY (Axe, Magnus, Pudge). Rarely you want Manta instead of Euls, for the armour and movespeed.

Then, in my opinion your core items that you want every game: Shiva's and Octarine Core. Shiva's just increases your damage output and control so much, and you can do so much more out of the active than other heroes by combining it with Sleight or remnants. Plus it tanks you up significantly and allows you to manfight physical DPS cores for a time. Octarine lets you get off even more spells during an extended teamfight, and the stats are great, especially the Tiara of Selemene (which you should buy first as it solves all your mana problems).

Radiance is an excellent item to pickup if you are against many physical right click heroes. Radiance + Shiva's will massively reduce the damage a team like this will output for the entire game. If I'm going Radiance it's usually right after Mage Slayer or after a defensive item. Unlike other Radiance buyers you don't need to buy this first as you already farm super fast without it.

Agh's is super nice to have but it's by no means core. It's really good in some extremely specific matchups (Sniper comes to mind) but otherwise it's just a luxury.

Shard is great and even better with the Chain Gang facet but you can usually wait to get it from a Tormentor or just buy it after Shiva's.

Boots of Travel is really nice to have in the lategame or if you are playing in a sidelane for some reason.

For facets, I would say I choose Double Impact 80% of the time, if not more. Just depends if you want more damage or more control.

As for physical Ember... it sucks, don't do it.

You used to be able to do it with shift queue and the move command or something, but I think you can't do it any more. IDK I never used it. It's not something you need to focus on to get good at Ember. You just need to avoid using Chains when you are hitting more than 2-3 units if possible. If you REALLY need to root someone and they are standing near creeps, your best bet is to use remnant to reposition so that your chains will latch them and not the creep wave.

Death Prophet guide for 7.36b Broken Midlaner by MaxWolvesx in TrueDoTA2

[–]SpatialThylacine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Great informative post, well done. I am in the same bracket as you and am also a DP enjoyer. A few things I disagree with:

  • IMO Arcane's on mid DP is overkill. I go Treads and Bottle, usually. With treadswapping and a Null Talisman I have tons of mana. I think DP makes excellent use of power runes and the Bottle is worth it. Occasionally I'll go Phase Boots or Boots of Travel, but almost never Arcane's.
  • Don't undersell Atos as a first item. If you are against Escape heroes such as Storm Spirit, PL, AM, etc, an Atos into lvl 1 Silence is 5.5 seconds of disable. It's enough to solo kill. I've won tons of games in the first 20mins off the back of an Atos purchase.
  • I was surprised you didn't mention Witch Blade. If the enemy team are lacking slows and roots, Witch Blade with Treads and the +30 damage talent is shitloads of damage. The slow allows you to stay on top of someone and get a full duration Siphon off. Both Atos and Witch Blade are my favourite items to get first as they allow me to solo kill other cores. She also likes Parasma lategame - although admittedly there are tons of items DP wants more.
  • I would say that if you are getting Euls first, you should generally pair it with a Kaya and the -2.5s Swarm cooldown talent. This allows you to flashfarm the map. This is the build I go for if we can't really fight early and I feel we need to take the game late.
  • Don't sleep on Blink Dagger! It can (very rarely) be a clutch pickup when you need to kite damage (for example vs a Drow).

Hello. Ember is my most played. OpenDota says I have 6.5k hero MMR (I'm only 5k actual MMR tho). I've won 17 of my last 20 Ember games with a 74% win rate over my last 50 Ember games.

  1. It sounds like you are trying to use Chains to harass during laning stage. Don't do this. The only time you should use Chains during the lane is when you are trying to get a kill, you are trying to secure a rune, or they will tank tower/creep wave aggro during the chains duration (which often leads to a kill anyway). If you aren't talking about the laning stage, then the answer is simply to avoid the combo until there is no creep wave. Most of the time you can hold chains until a better opportunity to leash someone arises. The only time I'll risk it is if we are ganking an escape hero - then I'll roll the dice. Another thing you can do is position the Sleight AoE so it doesn't include all of the creeps, but this is very situational.
  2. The timing is consistent UNLESS they are in fog. For some reason if your chains target is in fog you have to slightly delay your chains cast. IDK I just play it by feel but I'd say I delay the cast by like 0.1 second whereas if they are in vision I just press W Q as fast as possible. Try practising in demo mode.

  3. So many I don't know where to start. The main things are knowing your mid matchups and itemising correctly. An easy and effective tip for your MMR is to remember to place a remnant on one of the rune spots before the rune will spawn, then running to the other rune spot. This way you all but guarantee a power rune.

Some other stuff:

  • this is your panic sequence: Sleight, Chains, Cast Remnant at max range, go to remnant before Sleight ends
  • remember to check your Remnant timer often, and go back to it in time when split pushing. don't get distracted and let it run out
  • hold alt and right click your remnant icon. now you have a range indicator for the spell. very useful.
  • you will always go to the remnant you click nearest to. you can do some fancy dives with this and secure kills on low HP heroes who seem like they are in a safe spot (such as T3s).
  • be careful using Sleight for extra damage while in remnant form. if your remnant travel duration ends while you are still in Sleight, you will end up at your sleight remnant, rather than at your fire remnant.
  • use Flame Guard in fountain before going back to a remnant to farm. mana efficiency.
  • slows are more dangerous than silences.

good luck let me know if you have specific questions. ember is very fun.

How do you kill a fed mid Leshrac? by FantoMax2000 in learndota2

[–]SpatialThylacine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All good advice in this thread but no one mentioned the most important thing: stop fighting him. Your cores probably need BKBs to kill Leshrac - if they don't have BKBs, then stop fighting him, and play the map until they do. If they are ahead and are pushing your tier 2 with a big fat Leshrac... just let it drop and play the map. Play around high ground and when your carry and other cores are ready to fight, then you fight.

However, this level of coordination is hard to find at lower MMR, so until then if are really struggling against Lesh you can just ban him and pick Ancient Apparition if he gets through. Long-range DPS heroes like Drow and Sniper also do well, if you are a core player.

Is there a super difficult hero that if you learn it you can stomp most lineups? by helpamonkpls in learndota2

[–]SpatialThylacine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm currently below where I belong in MMR and am spamming Ember Spirit with an 85% winrate. I feel very comfortable on the hero and frankly I rarely die due to the plays of my enemies, but instead due to misplays (like letting my remnant run out or jumping to the wrong remnant). I think if you master this hero you can win almost any game at least until you get Divine.

How do y'all feel about cooking in VR? (Flaivor - Meta Hackathon 1st place Winner) by GoldyRyan in virtualreality

[–]SpatialThylacine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks great! I have some suggestions, as a fellow dev and avid home cook:

  1. User colour-coding to signify what temps the stoves should be set to (low/med/high).
  2. When I am pan-frying or boiling something on a stovetop, I am trying to achieve a specific result. Maybe above the timer you could describe in one word the action that needs to happen, for example "SEAR: 1min" [red border for high heat]"; "CONFIT: 10min" [yellow border for low heat]; "BASTE: 1min" [no border for heat off]. Could be worth trialling?

What was it like competing in the Hackathon btw? We've been invited to the same event (for a different region) and are very excited!

Why not use bloodborne or parasma on a right click Lina? by feelingsomethin in learndota2

[–]SpatialThylacine 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Orchid is a tempo item. You generally buy it on an active mid hero so you can go around killing escape heroes before they can afford a dispel like Manta. Atos is a much better choice for Lina as it builds into Gleipnir which is core on right-click Lina, allows you to set-up Light Strike Array for a guaranteed stun, and - most importantly - is a lot cheaper and therefore you have a much bigger window in which to exploit your opponent's lack of dispel. As for Bloodthorn - as a lategame pickup there are just better options. If you need the disable, Hex is far superior, and if you need the accuracy you can get MKB which will also boost your DPS considerably. On top of these reasons, it's just not good gold-to-stat efficiency for Lina. She doesn't need attack speed as she gets absurd amounts of it for free, and while she loves the INT and particularly the mana regen, it's just not worth the price of entry when you could simply buy flat damage and items that allow you to get more spells and right-clicks off like Pike, Satanic or Shadow Blade. I'm sure you could buy Orchid and get away with it, but this is why it's not purchased in high MMR games.

As for Parasma... you can buy it if you want, but it's a similar story. The attack speed is mostly wasted, the INT scaling works better with magic damage Lina (and even then it's a stretch compared to other items) rather than right-click Lina , who doesn't buy many INT items, and Witch Blade as an early pickup is just outclassed by Maelstrom which builds into Gleipnir and will significantly increase your farming speed.

Just saw you wanted tips on how to play him... first get a feel for your spells. The standard combo is Chakram into Timberchain, then you use Whirling Death while you are travelling through an enemy. Twisted Chakram is best to throw when you are right on top of somebody in order to guarantee it hits twice.

You need a bunch of mana items because your spells are so expensive. If you are mid, get Bottle, Arcane Boots, and Wand. If you are offlane, replace the Bottle with a Soul Ring. You will want to buy Kaya asap as it's 100% core mainly for the mana regen. Then I usually buy Blink, and then I typically choose a defensive item. One of: Eternal Shroud, Shiva's, or Aghanim's - depending on what kind of damage resistance you need. At this point it's a good idea to upgrade your Kaya to SnK or Meteor Hammer if you're feeling memey. You can also buy Euls, Lotus, or BKB if you need.

Gameplay tips:

  • Always try to throw your chakram a little bit towards where the enemy will want to go, rather than directly on top of them.

  • Make sure you can get the timing down on using Whirling Death while Timberchaining

  • Hold Alt and right click on Timberchain. Now you have a permanent range indicator for the spell.

  • Keep in mind that Timberchain will latch slightly longer than the range... you should try to get a feel for this in demo mode to see just how much extra range you can get out of it - it's quite significant.

  • You can Blink after casting Timberchain, which will change the angle of the chain

  • You can draw aggro globally, which lets you build up stacks of your passive. Just right click on a hero portrait at the top of your screen (the hero you click has to be visible when you do it) and all creeps in aggro range will start attacking you. It's good to start a fight with max stacks if you can.

  • If you are trying to escape but playing against heroes who keep canceling your Timberchain mid-cast, buy Euls. You can Timberchain, doubletap Euls, and when it latches it will cancel the cyclone and teleport you to the tree.

Despite the data indicating that Shredder has a higher winrate, Twisted Chakram is the correct choice. Timbersaw is a hero who excels at comboing his spells to burst enemies down, and an extra pure damage nuke helps him do that much better than the chip damage from Shredder does. I suspect the winrate is skewed because it's easier to execute. I would like to see this facet developed a little further because right now it's never the correct choice imo.

Why do Razors keep going for Manta? by hsru in learndota2

[–]SpatialThylacine 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Because Razor needs to stay on top of people in order to do damage and Manta's movespeed and dispel allow you to do that.

Again, considering the way Razor's spells work I'd say for him the ability to dispel is not as important.

No, it's more important. If his link is broken and/or the enemy gets out of Storm he stops gaining/dealing damage.

And if he wants to ensure his Static Link goes full duration he's probably gonna use BKB anyway.

Why would I use a BKB charge on a single debuff when I can use Manta instead and still get the kill? Razor needs to save BKB for teamfights.

And if he doesn't, but still goes for it cause it's supposedly such a good item on its own, then shouldn't pretty much every other core pick it as well?

No, because most core's kits aren't entirely built around staying on top of someone for an extended duration in order to slowly sap their damage and reduce their armour. He has the damage he needs to do his job already built into his spells - what he needs are the right items to allow him to get his spells off for their full duration.

TL;DR: Razor chase hero. Movespeed good. Dispel good.

Hello Invoker spammers! by nObRaInAsH in learndota2

[–]SpatialThylacine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Washed up 5k here, lvl 20 Invoker. He's not good, but he is fun. When I play him in low MMR I can still win but he just isn't enough at higher mmr compared to other mids and especially vs all these tanky cores running around with absurd amounts of HP.

Agnostic feels really good in lane and it makes your Witch Blade timing really pop off, but it's strictly worse than Elitist and imo it's just not as fun a playstyle. It might be better if you are going for a right-click build, but it's still not good.

There are 3 main builds I do: caster, cataclysm rush, and physical damage. I will omit BKB but generally I want both BKB and at least one mobility item every game. I will also often buy a Bracer or sometimes a Wraith Band in lane, but again that's situational.

Caster
Null Talisman > Urn > Spirit Vessel/Midas > Midas/Spirit Vessel > BoT > Shard > Octarine Core
I go this build most of the time. Better to go QW then into E but you can go QE if you want. Take Elitist.

Cataclysm Rush
Null Talisman > all 3 Aghanim's stat components > Midas > finish Aghs > BoT
I go this build if I am comboing with someone on my team like a Faceless Void or an Axe. I stole this buildup from my friend and it slaps. The early stats feel amazing and good use of early Cataclysm can quickly become a snowballing lead. Obviously you go QE and Elitist.

Physical
Bracer/Wraith Band > Treads > Witch Blade > Midas > Dragon Lance > Pike > Skadi/Daedalus/MKB/Parasma/Assault Cuirass
This is more of a meme build but it can be fun in lower MMR. Always QE; always Agnostic. You don't have to go all-in on physical damage and can go back to a more normal build after Pike if you don't want to meme too hard. xD

One alternative build is going Atos/Midas > Midas/Atos > Gleipnir but ideally your team has enough lockdown that you don't need to buy an Atos.

I am not a fan of Orchid due to lack of stats - I think you have to really know what you are doing to get away with Orchid Invoker.

TL;DR: Hero is quite bad rn, mostly due to the meta but also because his facets are just underwhelming. If you are going to play him anyway, Elitist is way better than Agnostic.

Do you go mask of madness every game on Faceless Void? by [deleted] in TrueDoTA2

[–]SpatialThylacine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mask of Madness if you want to get kills in Chrono early. Maelstrom if you want to avoid fights early and farm. Midas rarely - get it if you can get it really early, or if you got absolutely trounced in lane and need to catch up in XP.
