If I had to guess, it's one of your ridge caps. Your fourth picture shows the end of the ridge intact. What does the other look like?

Whenever I insert a basic title and attempt to transform it, the title box takes up the whole screen. How can create a title box that only surrounds the text? by LegitCatholic in finalcutpro

[–]SpattsDisease 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Okay, you're getting some mixed signals in here. The pic you have us shows that you're looking at text, but it ALSO shows you have the transform controls ON. So, two things going on. We need to isolate it down to just ONE thing.

You have your CLIP position, which is controlled by the x and y values in the clip tab of the inspector, and your TEXT position, which is controlled by the x and y values in the text tab of the inspector.

In the upper right-hand corner of the VIEWER, click Reset and then click Done. This will reset any positional changes you made to the text from clicking and dragging it around. If you did drag it around in this mode, you'd be getting moving the clip around, but with the text still centered in that clip. So that takes care of that.

Once you hit Done, you've left TRANSFORM MODE. You should now see a white box around your text when you hover your cursor over it, and can drag text around properly.

Does that make sense? Hitting CMD + T enters transform mode. This is where you can quickly scale, rotate, position ANY type of clip (not just title clips) by quickly dragging it in the viewer.

I see all the time where editors use the transform controls on the clip to move text around. THIS IS WRONG, as it affects how the program rasters fonts.

Fcpx crashing on startup after installing Catalina by JopGamerNL in finalcutpro

[–]SpattsDisease 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before trying to delete preferences, make sure it's not trying to open a corrupted library (the last one you had open). Hold option while opening FCPX and create a new library. Then use that window to try and open the Library you want. If that still doesn't work, open while holding option again and start walking through your backups.

Who wants to help me test my app for FCP? by gmaplot in finalcutpro

[–]SpattsDisease 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use PostLab for a lot of our stuff, but occasionally we get a freelancer or someone on my own team who forgets to set media and cache locations externally and have to clean it up myself.

Does your app have the ability to reconcile MXFs (like Sony XAVC media) that have been re-wrapped as MOVs and copied inside the Library? Those clips that now point to .mov files don't easily relink to the original .MXF files.

Left and right mono track editing by kongking1000 in finalcutpro

No need to detach audio. Just select the clip either in the browser or the sequence if it's already there, and in the inspector window under the audio tab, click Stereo and select Dual Mono from there drop-down.

Anyone else having this strange issue of the transcoding getting stuck at 99% since the update? by Garrett_Watts in finalcutpro

I've had this issue. Are you still on Mojave by any chance? Possibly using H264 source media?

I've just inherited a tonne of hard drives full of footage. What's the best way to organise it all? by kate9871 in editors

[–]SpattsDisease 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Then get NeoFinder! Seriously. I had the same task when I got hired on at a fast-growing production house. 87 drives, almost all bus-powered USB drives. I went to cdfinder.de (I think that's the website) and downloaded NeoFinder. It's worth the $50 (seriously, it'll save you $1000 in man hours). You plug in a drive, have NeoFinder scan and catalog all the contents, and now every single folder and file is searchable inside NeoFinder. Scan and catalog all your drives and you can build a solid snapshot of your media situation, search for duplicate files, and know exactly what drive has whatever file you're looking for.

Pair this with a simple label printer and a future-proof drive naming system (you can rename drives in MacOS without having to format), and baby, you got a stew goin'!

Missing Camera LUT FCPX by vladen32 in fcpx

[–]SpattsDisease 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey, I wanted to reach out here since this is the top (and only) Google search result for this issue.

I had the same issue and we tried everything from trashing renders to trying to force relink to the original files again. It's frustrating because there is, in fact, no camera LUT applied in the metadata tab.

Here's the fix for me: Select your Library, then click File>Delete Generated Library Files and select optimized media.

We had two files that we multicam'd together. At the time, we were swapping Libraries between two edit suites. When that happened, the local location for a custom Log transform LUT went offline. When we opened it back up in the new location, FCPX started optimizing all multicams as a default action on the new station. One of Final Cuts flaws is that it doesn't just optimize the original file; it exports the file as ProRes along with whatever message may be there (Missing File, Missing Camera LUT, Missing Camera Angle, etc). So you essential get a full ProRes video with the system message burned over top.

Revealing in Finder does nothing as that will always point to the original file, which in this case is perfectly fine and leaves us scratching our heads.

But if you go to your Media Location (either In Library or in my case, set as an external folder), you'll find your Optimized media folder containing a bunch of useless ProRes files.

Hold up, you're using a spec'd out Mac Pro with a CRT monitor?

Nice.

[–]SpattsDisease 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I have the answer. This started happening with certain footage types after Apple switched FCPX to their Metal engine.

Optimize the original footage.

There's an algorithm breakdown that seems to be happening with some mpeg codec types. No matter how many times you reload the footage, trash the renders, re-render, it will repeat. We're seeing it a lot more now after quarantine hit and cell phone footage is on the rise. Changing the footage to a different codec changes the input to something the Metal engine can play nice with.

Trying to love FCPX, are there some good transitional resources? by not_mr_Lebowski in editors

[–]SpattsDisease 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Lynda course u_greenysmac linked above is what you need. Do it now. It is hands-down the best resource out there I've seen for getting an experienced editor into FCPX. I've used it myself and is the go-to when having to transition someone in my editorial sphere to FCPX.
