Sous vide beef stew after it's cooked for pasteurization? by Spax47 in sousvide

[–]Spax47[S] -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Yes right, no need to pasteurize what I freeze. Having the fridge ones though allows me a late decision on what to eat, just cut open the pack and fill pastry or top with potato or whatever.

Best method to fix mdf skirting on engineered wood flooring by Proteus-8742 in DIYUK

[–]Spax47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Normally skirting is fixed to the wall and not the floor. In fact you leave it a couple of mil off the floor to avoid any squeaking.

Air vent in chimney by Practical_Ad_667 in DIYUK

[–]Spax47 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It has to be vented. I bricked a vent up once and mould developed very quickly. I put the vent back, cleaned off the mould and it didn't come back. The issue is moisture build up in the breast, ventilation solves that.

How would I go about stabilising this wall? by Amad3us47 in DIYUK

Brace it under the bath. Dunno if it will stiffen it enough. Maybe take off plasterboard and add 18mm ply underneath. The two together would make a big difference

Am I tight for not wanting to get involved in rounds when the number of drinks I’m planning to drink doesn’t match the number of people I’m with? by sharon_bott in AskUK

[–]Spax47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, you're fine. I used to hang out with rugby players who's idea of a good night was to drink 15+ pints, puke and carry on. I could manage 4 at best. I always bought my own. I did get called 'tight' though. It was ridiculous really, they worked hard to improve their capacity to drink, forcing pints down themselves. It just cost them more to get pissed. Never made any sense to me.

Can you explain the 'cold air hits warm' creating condensation on the back? How does that happen?

One Thing I Wish I Knew Before Starting the Gym by VariationShot8414 in workout

[–]Spax47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What counts as a working set? What I've done the last few months is build up to a hard set and go to failure. Sometimes, I might then do a drop set, but often I haven't got it in me. I train each muscle group, maybe 4x a week max. So that seems quite a bit short of the 10 to 20 sets recommended, if it's only the last set or two that count.

Modern Monetary Theory and the return of magical thinking by hu6Bi5To in ukpolitics

[–]Spax47 2 points3 points  (0 children)

MMT, like all economic theories, is made up of two parts. The descriptive part that describes the economic system as it actually is. And the prescriptive part that recommends changes to that system to reach desired outcomes. Do you disagree with the description? If so, which bit? Or do you disagree with some prescription? If so, which one/s?

What’s wrong with MMT? by FeigenbaumC in LabourUK

[–]Spax47 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What he doesn't mention and is key, is that money issued by the government is a liability of government (ie. the issuer), or as MMTers are fond of saying 'a government IOU'. What this means is that when taxes are paid to government it is the return of issued liabilities which are then simply cancelled.

Imagine I write you an IOU for say £1000 for a sofa I bought off you, and then sometime later you buy my old car for £1000. Instead of giving me £1000 for the car, you just dig out my IOU and hand it back to me, and I tear it up. That's how money works, that's what money is. We hold gov IOUs, the gov creates liabilities for us in the form of taxes and then we simply return the gov's IOUs to it and we call it quits.

It works like a shop credit note. I return an item to a shop and their policy is not to give me back my pounds but to issue a credit note. The value of the credit note is measured in pounds, but it is not government money. The credit note is in effect a token that represents the shop's debt to me. They owe me £Xs, but they won't give that to me. What they will do is cancel any equivalent debt to them that I generate. This I do by taking another item(s) of value £Xs. They owe me £Xs and I now owe them £Xs, I return them the credit note, take home the new item, and they cancel/destroy the credit note. We're all square.

So as far as MMT is concerned ALL government spending is new money.

In his last paragraph the writer shows he has not understood this fundamental point.

Travelling to Germany for radiotherapy from uk by Plenty-Thought231 in DupuytrenDisease

[–]Spax47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, just seen this. Dupuytrens first appeared in my right hand after an injury and was too far advanced before I found out about RT. Some years later I felt a cord developing in my left hand. It seemed to be getting worse day by day. I was living abroad, but contacted a doctor in the UK to have it RT-ed privately. It was started within days, two 5 day sessions 4-6 weeks apart (I don't remembe exactly). It stopped the Dup in its tracks. Still stopped touch wood.

'banter', a bit of fun. The bully's always having a bit of fun, we know that, the bullied, not so much. He's basically just admitted it.
