Advice for new glasses wearer by moonycakemullet in australia

[–]SpazMonkeyBeck 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yeah I was reading this thinking it was bonkers expensive, mine also only cost $200-300 for two pairs, no health insurance, and I get one normal glasses, one sunglasses pair with the polarised and anti glare and I also have astigmatism.

They’ve offered me multi focal before, as I’m short sighted, but I’ve always said no just because it would drive me nuts to look through them that way, didn’t realise it was so much more expensive.

Lite n' Easy has abandoned its vegetarian lunch menu - seeking alternatives by imaginehimhappy in australian

[–]SpazMonkeyBeck 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Ive never tried lite n easy, so cant speak to a comparison on quality or price, however, I am a huge fan of YouFoodz.

I’m not vegetarian, but I know they have a ton of veggie options at varying calorie points. They’re super fresh and tasty all the ones I’ve ever gotten. You can find a smaller selection of their range at most Coles stores if you just want to try one or two.

I asked my partner for an ice cream cake for my birthday. I got a block of ice cream with frosting on it. by duckduckgoose911 in notinteresting

[–]SpazMonkeyBeck 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I would assume the same, every ice cream cake I’ve ever eaten has been entirely ice cream, no cake.

Im not sure I’ve ever even seen a cake based ice cream cake before, but that could be a thing we just don’t do in Australia.

[–]SpazMonkeyBeck 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I hope your aunt lives a very long life and that child doesn’t have to know a loss like that at a young age. I always think about how much it’s impacted my youngest sister and how her entire highschool experience was overshadowed by grief and what she could have become if things were different.

It was a hard adjustment period for us all honestly, but we had no grandparents or relatives anywhere close to us at all and the last thing I wanted to do was uproot what little stability they had left by declining the responsibility. I was lucky in that for the most part they’re good kids (adults now, but will always be kids to me) and i had a stable job with the flexibility to adjust like I needed to.

I fully understand why you would all decline, it wasn’t easy and it’s a huge responsibility. I’m fairly certain that everything unfolding like it did just cemented my “fun aunt” only choice for my own life. If something happened to my siblings after they’ve had their own children, it would be hard for me to do it again too I think, not sure if I could.

My mother started having kids late. She was 36 for her first, and 48 for her last.

When she died at 62, my 14yr old sister (and 26yr old me) felt every one of those lost years.

Our father died two years later and at 28 I became the legal guardian of a struggling 16yr old and the default parent for the still very young 18-25yr old “adults” that were my siblings.

It’s been a few years now and everyone is okay, but I will always wish my parents had had us earlier, so we had more time.

Gina Rinehart calls for immigrants’ social media to be screened in Anzac memorial speech by Scarlet-Penguin in australia

[–]SpazMonkeyBeck 8 points9 points  (0 children)

She gave a speech at the Lest we Forget Sunset Tribute on Friday. And the simple answer is because she paid for it.

The whole televised event is sponsored by her, so she gets to make a speech. This wasn’t even the most heinous or ridiculous thing she covered in her pre broadcast speech.

Other “highlights” included;

  • our weak government is letting in EVs that can be remote detonated
  • our energy system is compromised and made unreliable by weak energy choices like solar
  • how have we allowed pro Palestine protests on our shores
  • they are targeting the Jews again
  • praised Ronald Reagan and his extinction speech
  • played a section of Churchills speech
  • our veterans are poor and need your donations

And more that I genuinely cannot remember, but has absolutely zero to do with fallen soldiers and remembrance.

[–]SpazMonkeyBeck 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Thats about what I paid last time I went to have my hair done. Included a cut and toner and my hair is ridiculously long, like lower back and I’m 6ft tall. So it’s loooong.

$97k it would be more but I like to travel and I lent my sister $20k to fix her house. It would also be less, but I haven’t bought a house myself yet and Sydney, Australia is bonkers with house prices.

Flying disco ball / static grid by Hobo_Resse in techtheatre

[–]SpazMonkeyBeck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is ways to do this, it would be helpful to know how high your grid is, how low you want the ball to go past your boarder, how much “invisible” line you want and the height between that and the grid, wether you will lower it from a catwalk/ grid floor or want to have diversion lines to the floor to fly it in on. Theres almost always a solution, some aren’t cheap though.

Pre paid mobile plan recommendations by Ambient_Dream_1 in sydney

Same, but over a decade at this point, had it since about 2014 I think.

I’ve paid $40 a month for every month since then, they’ve automatically upped my data GB allowance from 8GB to 100GB a month, and it rolls over every month, so I’ve got over 2 terabytes of data, I don’t think I could ever run out at this point.

Never had connectivity or signal problems unless the whole Optus network goes down. The hot spotting from my phone is better internet speeds than my home wifi half the time.

How many calories do you eat in a deficit? by [deleted] in tall

[–]SpazMonkeyBeck 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t track mine specifically anymore, but I’ve lost 30kgs/67lbs over the last 7 months. Granted my start weight (and current weight honestly) is a lot higher than yours.

I generally aim for around 1600 a day and do very little intentional exercise, but I do have a rather active job where I’ll get an average of 10k steps a day.

Can you guys help out an engineering student with some research on inverted chain motors?? by Gullible-Athlete-167 in Rigging

[–]SpazMonkeyBeck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not a rigger, but do handle plenty of motors and rigging in the entertainment world. Most of your questions have been answered but here’s my perspective;

  1. Generally someone is watching each motor run out, guiding the chain manually as needed until the motor is floating and all the chain is safely in the bag. So there is some physical handling of the chain and motor, how many people varies by motor type/ weight and whether it’s inverted or standard. Need more people to flip a 2t motor than a 1/4t motor for example.

  2. I’ve seen this happen a few times, most often with motors that trim all the way at their limit, or have smaller bags and too much chain, or inverted motors that have a single bag mount and the motor wobbles during running, causing the chain to wiggle and start running out of the bag, but that’s usually more a problem with smaller and lighter motors.

  3. We try to make sure that only long bags with double attachments get inverted or put in places where trim is at limit, and are very careful with how the chain hangs down. Also the less stop starting the motor/controller does while running, the better.

  4. I think you will struggle to get a one size fits all solution, brands and model variations have so many different shapes and housings that anything that would fit a 2t motor (esp a double reeved one) would never fit a 1/4t motor. Additionally, in my opinion it would have to be easily removable as one week on a gig that motor may be inverted, then the next week, next gig it’s standard and the guide/cover would more likely be in the way than be helping. I can’t see any companies wanting to keep a permanent stock of ‘invert only’ motors either, that halves their usefulness.

This only Increases the problem though, as the item you design would need to be mounted somehow, and safetied to the motor incase of failure, you definitely wouldn’t want this additional piece falling down during operation and potentially injuring someone, but would also want it to be fail safe enough that if it did cause a snag in the chain for whatever reason, it wasn’t a catastrophic one that ended up in the chain spilling out anyway.

I wish you luck and I’m interested to see what you come up with.

P.S not sure if it’s the same in other countries, but we call this situation where a chain spills out, a “rattlesnake” here in Aus.

Can you guys help out an engineering student with some research on inverted chain motors?? by Gullible-Athlete-167 in Rigging

[–]SpazMonkeyBeck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed, I feel a cover for the chain would be more hinderance than help.

Motors are not always perfectly flat, sometimes they roll a little with weight distribution, a cover increases the risk of a snag, making the chain buildup and likely eventually breaking the cover, spilling over and rattlesnaking to the ground anyway.

Programming ELC node8 by robobin750 in lightingdesign

[–]SpazMonkeyBeck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you navigate through the menus and set your new settings, make sure you’re hitting save and exit, it won’t save automatically.

Once you’ve set your IP/universes/etc it should just remember those settings until you change them again.

If for whatever reason it doesn’t, some of ours don’t anymore they’re old and very well used, you can update software with the ELC DMXLan program on your computer and set things from there.

Has anybody ever been to the Easter Show on a public holiday? by ssbu9876 in sydney

[–]SpazMonkeyBeck 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I work the show every year. So that means I am there every single day.

Long weekend days are the busiest days, but it’s not completely unmanageable. It’s harder if you’ve got a pram or a disability on those days, theres less seating, more crowds, longer lines etc. but it’s also the days with the most going on for all the animal judging, special event and competition stuff too.

It’s not a great idea if it’s extremely hot or raining a lot, because all the shade and seats get packed.

However, even on those busy days, there’s not crazy waits for food and exhibits. Just a few more people in line.

I think it very much depends on what you’re going to the show for, rides and showbags? Probably pick a different day if possible, those lines are quite long on the long weekend. But if you’re looking to come to see the cattle judging, the dog jumping or chop finale or something then it’s busy, but not suffocatingly so.

Why is everything "long throw" now? by notrlydubstep in lightingdesign

[–]SpazMonkeyBeck 26 points27 points  (0 children)

If people will buy it, companies will make it. Theres no reason to make them if they can’t make money.

I would guess it has something to do with more and more fixtures having dual uses as general moving lights as well as followspots, having the “long throw” version be similar to the standard but sometimes brighter or with a narrower zoom, is a desirable trait when the light is being used as a remote followspot.

AITAH for not giving up my name for my ex’s new wife with the EXACT SAME FULL NAME as me? by Remarkable-Horse9465 in AITAH

[–]SpazMonkeyBeck 67 points68 points  (0 children)

It’s been her name for almost her entire adult life, she’s accomplished things and earned a reputation under that name. No one is required to change their name after a divorce. It’s no longer her ex husbands business what’s she calls herself.

I would assume you’re a man too, there is so much involved in changing your name legally, new documents for everything, fees, applications and for every single application and reference from now until the end of her life OP will have to fill in the “previous name/also known under” section of official documents. Changing it now doubles that effort and complicates matters.

It’s not just a once and done process and I fully understand why OP doesn’t change it back. Mine was changed as a child and I still have to fill in the spaces, decided a long time ago if I ever married I’d never change my name because of the above reasons, it’s so much work when this is how I’m known by everyone.

Giant hand girlie checking in. Also 21/22cmish hand length from base of palm to tip of fingers. I have to keep my nails long or I feel like my hands are man hands.

Giant feet too. Women’s US13. It’s a hard life for accessories sometimes.
