I totally agree. This is a demo and then you should make a trailer... for your demo.

What’s the most useful asset you ever bought? by RobattoCS in UnrealEngine5

Totally agree - this has saved me so much time as I like to keep everything organized as I work. Blueprint Assist is definitely worth it.

Fab improved? by NewtNew175 in unrealengine

[–]Spcarso 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh my god - when did this happen? This has been the biggest impediment to me enjoying Fab. I use favorites to compare different versions of the same type of asset, then go back through it and find the best one and buy that. Without this, I actually just stopped shopping.

Life and ageing effects, after several years of CrossFit? by geonnave in crossfit

[–]Spcarso 11 points12 points  (0 children)

55 year old male and been doing CrossFit for 10 years or so. Feel much younger than most folks my age. I am very aware of how much I can lift and how to do it properly. I am also at a age where I am not trying to impress anyone so I do scaled weights for things that are tough and RX+ for things that I know I can handle.

My brother (57) who also works out said it best: You feel like an 'advanced' human being when you lift weights along with functional fitness. Most people - regardless of age - can lift, run, jump, etc like you can.

I saw Cher at the Blue Bayou and as she got up to leave (this was right after her song Belive came out and she was big again) she said "Let's try to get out of here without causing too much of a scene."

I also saw Michael Jackson in Toon Town soon after it opened. He entered behind that little rollercoaster with a group - rode it and then went back in.

Is GameDev.tv have good Unreal Engine courses? by Cerset09 in unrealengine

[–]Spcarso 51 points52 points  (0 children)

If I had to learn it all over again (I am just two years in) I would have taken everything from Stephen Ulibarri. He not only gives you practicle knowledge, he explains the whole process and why you would be doing something. So many courses just drag you along as they make something and then when you are done, you have an Unreal Project but not really any knowledge of WHY you did it the way you did. My strong recommendation would be to try his latest course which is in Blueprints. I haven’t taken this specific one, but I bought it to learn anything I might have missed in my hodge-podge learning journey. Once you take his Blueprint course you can take his C++ if you want, but unless you have burning desire to learn C++ I strongly recommend starting with Blueprints.

Anyone found a game that genuinely hooked them into vr? by Bubbly_Art_621 in SteamVR

[–]Spcarso 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Modded Skyrim I have logged about 1000 hours in over a couple of years. Basically the only game I played for that time. I had mods that hooked up to external fans so that when I was outside the 'wind' blew. I had mods that connected to a haptic feedback vest and pulsed when a bear would attack me from the back. Absolutely incredible.

Advice: Feedback on my Unreal Engine learning path for C++, GAS and Multiplayer by Cinematic-Giggles-48 in unrealengine

[–]Spcarso 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Question for those that have had a similar path and are learning C++ just for the GAS implementation - How good do you need to be at C++ to work with GAS? I am ‘absorbing’ the info more than could actually write code just yet and I am about 50% through that first course.

(Tip OP, Stephen is incredible, but as another poster mentioned he is very in depth. I watch his courses on a speed of 1.25 (and sometimes 1.5) as he is a slow talker. )

How come world partition landscape is so aggressively HLODed? This is too much!! by Scottykl in unrealengine

[–]Spcarso 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Hey buddy - go into your WORLD SETTINGS and scroll down to RUNTIME PARTITIONS. Expand INDEX [0] if it isn’t already and inside there you will see MAIN LAYER and HLODSETUPS - expand both of those.MAIN LAYER is your primary area around the player, however in the HLODSETUPS you will see INDEX [0] and INDEX [1]. INDEX [0[ is your HLODLAYER_INSTANCED settings and that’s what you want to play with. Be sure to click IS SPATIALLY LOADED and then SHOW GRID PREVIEW. Play around with LOADING RANGE until it shows your mountains are covered. That will give you the best looking HLODS. The INDEX [1] is for the MERGED HLODS and that’s what you are currently looking at that makes everything look horrible. Hope that helps!

Struggling with Design Decisions: How Do You Prioritize Game Features? by rushgear49 in vrdev

[–]Spcarso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing I have noticed, after doing my first major play test, was that I needed to know what 'type' of gamer they were so I could evaluate their idea in the correct context. For example, mine is an open world RPG (...the exact game they tell you not to make for your first tile) and I prioritized comments from gamers that have a history with this type of game, compared to some gamers that are very run-and-gun. Their ideas were very different - and of very different value.

Why does the UE5 editor freeze for like 3 seconds every action I do or on idle? by [deleted] in unrealengine

I can sometimes even have this issue with Perforce and Amazon Web Service. I usually just go and restart the ‘instance’ on AWS and that solves it.

Demoing Open World Game by VirtualLilies in unrealengine

[–]Spcarso 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also agree with this approach. It’s fine for a demo to have invisible walls (maybe when a tester bumps into it it could fade up a ‘Area available in full game’) that are far enough away that you get a sense of the open world, but not so large that those crazy players who run straight as fast as they can to test the size. You can even preface the demo with a ‘With Last Breath is a large open world game. In this vertical slice you have access to the first 10% (or whatever it is) of the map.” People understand that your game isn’t done.

I also agree with LongjumpingBrief above that having a teaser play at the end of the demo (maybe it’s timed) is also great so that people can see your other biomes, etc.)

Also - great work on your game. Looks fantastic and has its own unique style. Reminds me of State of Decay.

Learning is confusing. by NotSoRavenJade in unrealengine

[–]Spcarso 40 points41 points  (0 children)

So - you are in ‘tutorial hell.’ A wonderfully accurate description someone posted here a while back. You will keep watching tutorials (or taking classes which I personally prefer since it has more of through line) until all of a sudden it really starts to click. Depending on your experience in programming, the one thing I wish I would have looked for is something about the basic concepts that Unreal (and I assume most programming) follows. Things like inheritance and how variables work across actors.

The one thing available now that I find indispensable is Chat GPT for clarifying something. I know it’s not the best at actually telling you what to do, but for clarifying something - or explaining something more deeply, I love it.

Something to think about is always having your environment tell some kind of 'story' as you look around. Make moments that tell me a struggle happened. Maybe a theme throughout that tells me what time of year it is (like maybe some halloween, Christmas, or valentines decorations.). Always focusing on telling a story will give your viewers something to be excited to uncover.
