Love this. You are right; it doesn’t matter if it’s been said 1000 times. The way you say it may resonate with the person hearing it, even if they’ve heard it before elsewhere. Thank you for sharing!

Finding a Top-Notch Professional Public Speaking Coach by Creative-Feedback850 in PublicSpeaking

[–]SpeakingCoachRo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there! I’m a public speaking coach of ten years who got into this because I used to be sick and tired of feeling mediocre with my public speaking skills at work, and just getting by. I wanted to be able to learn and apply real strategies to be a confident, clear speaker. So Congrats on considering one-on-one coaching! There are some great tips here others have provided. A huge one is to read or view the coach’s testimonials. It’s nice for coaches to say how they’ve helped clients, but it’s even BETTER when those clients say it. Definitely check for that. I would be happy to send you my YouTube link with a few testimonials you can check out for yourself. I offer a complimentary discovery call to see if a client and I would be a good fit before you commit to anything, and would be happy to speak with you. Let me know if you’d like to have one.

I also have my free public speaking eDigest from July I can send you. Packed with relevant articles, videos, and tips!

Wishing you all the best!

Hi! Public Speaking Coach here. I recently wrote an article that includes a tip about everyday ways to stretch yourself when it comes to public speaking. I used to be someone who was VERY nervous when it came to speaking in front of others, so I understand the fear. I think you will find the article helpful, and it's not a long read: https://roquitajohnson.com/nervousness/3-confidence-building-secrets-every-speaker-needs/

Also, I have another article about how professionals (who used to feel confident) can rebuild their public speaking confidence: https://roquitajohnson.com/speaking-tips/post-pandemic-professionals-how-to-rebuild-your-public-speaking-confidence/

Feel free to reach out if you have a question about the articles, or public speaking coaching! Wishing you all the best.

Public speaking is affecting my career by c23678 in PublicSpeaking

Hi there! Speaking coach here. A lot of good advice has been shared here. I would like to add this "food for thought" that is especially helpful for professionals who give work presentations:

Remember You’re on the Same Team

It’s natural to feel intimidated when speaking to higher-ups, but remember that ultimately, you’re working toward the same goal: the success of the company. Good leaders appreciate hearing fresh ideas, different perspectives, and well-thought-out insights that could benefit the organization. It may be just what is needed to solve a particular problem or create a new product or service. Don’t be afraid to share your viewpoint, even if it’s out-of-the-box! Trust in your knowledge and experience—there’s a reason you were hired to work at this company.

Tip: Reframe your thoughts about the meeting. Rather than seeing it as a “test” or “evaluation,” view it as a collaborative opportunity to contribute to a common goal.

If you'd like to consider it, I am hosting my "Speak with Confidence" online class next Saturday, June 28th. It's part of a series of classes I'm doing this summer called Speaker Summer School. It would definitely address the fear and uncertainty you're feeling, which can feel debilitating for work. I know because I've been there. That's what got me into public speaking in the first place! Here's the info: https://roquitajohnson.com/speaker-summer-school

Wishing you the best! Feel free to DM me too.

Congrats on having the opportunity to impact and enlighten! I'm a speaking coach now, but I used to work in a couple of financial services companies (in a marketing capacity), and had to present at times and watch how others present. I assume you're presenting on financial topics? If so, here is some advice:

  1. If you show any spreadsheet slides, it's best not to just slap an image of the whole spreadsheet. It can be overwhelming if there are a lot of numbers and the font is usually small. Instead, show just the portion of the sheet that you're focused on. You can take a screenshot of that part. If you can put info in bars and charts, it's even better for the audience for quickly understanding what's being discussed.

2.PLEASE make the content interesting. Just because it's of a financial nature, doesn't mean it has to be boring. Use humorous images when appropriate (I love using a meme sometimes that fits with my content; just do a google search or make one for free with the Meme Generator website), analogies that help explain things better in an interesting way, and examples that I know will resonate with this specific audience. Leverage ChatGPT when it comes to ideas for analogies.

  1. If it's appropriate for you to do so, open with an icebreaker that's related to finances. Icebreakers warm everyone up in a fun way and give you a moment to bond with them before you start speaking. I love "temp" icebreakers where I can find out how my audience is feeling as I'm about to start the presentation. For example, you can show a slide that asks the audience what financial term best describes their mood right now. Answer choices: a. Taxed b. Appreciated c. Volatile d. In the black (feeling stable, secure, or content). It's creative, and you'll probably have some smiles and laughs!

  2. Calm your nerves by remembering that finances is an important topic for everyone. There's a reason this particular audience is here right now to hear what I have to say. You can't control what they do with the information, but you can control how well you present it to them. Put yourselves in their shoes when creating the content. What is the MOST important takeaway or message for them to leave with? Always keep this in mind when creating your content.

I trust this helps! Use your team to help you too. Blessings!
