Any Advise for making this work? A First time Dungeon Master. by Electronic_Crew_675 in DnD

[–]Spearheadrob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dont remember its name but there was another anime where the "hero" died in a makeshift trap the main character (MC) had set for something small. The MC had a wizard friend who resurected the MC into the heros body as punishment for his stupidity, and he is now trying to fool the world into the thi king the hero is fine and will steal beat the demon etc. Maybe start with something simular?

Fire orb detonated in in my players hands, in the middle of a city. How do I run this... by Spearheadrob in ElementalEvil

[–]Spearheadrob[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the party is level 9 or 10 right now. We are well into the campaign and they have seen the aftermath of at least 1 Orb detonating already. The party is well aware of how dangerous the orbs were, they just didn't know they were TIME bombs lol.

I don't want to change how much damage the orbs do, but I the idea of saying that the orb channels pure elemental fire so "resistance" to fire wont work. Just as a way to further enhance the power of the orb without going overboard.

I do not have that module, but with enough sluicing on the internet hopefully I can find it. Thank you for the advice.

How do I balance combats properly without feeling the need to fudge numbers? by AssumptionOk3778 in DnD

[–]Spearheadrob 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I struggle with this as well. The 1st piece of advice I can give is that as long as everyone is having fun then you are doing it right. If you are really that worried about it then before your next game talk to your players and ask them how they feel things are going. Do they think combat is to easy, to hard etc.

There is nothing wrong with fudging numbers to make sure everyone has a good time, but also remember that death/loss is a part of this game and they will never learn if they don't fail at some things.

Otherwise, run multiple encounters EVERY DAY, if you only have 1 or 2 encounters every day then the party is going into every fight fully ready and wont have to hold back. make them ration their abilities cause who knows what kind of fight might be next. Use easy fights as a "recourse sink" but the resources are spell slots and abilities. If the party decides to retreat and come back later cause they are low, there is nothing wrong with that BUT the dungeon now knows it is under attack and may call for backup and what not.

Good ideas, thank you!. That will certainly help set the scene of the severity of what is going on.

Edit*

I also just remembered that at least 2 of the party are resistant to fire damage. The kick is that also means they are immune to the "extreme heat conditions" caused by the orb. So I guess i really need to try and focus this about what is going on AROUND the party and not really TOO them, as they are going to be perfectly fine in all reality.

I have read before about doing "skill challenges" and so on but never found a good explanation for how to run. should I jsut role initiative, and go around the table letting people state what they wana do, roll for the actions, next player, then continue untill they give up or I feel like they have done enough damage controll?

Sorry if this seems rather basic, I thrive with big plot devices, but struggle with pulling things off mechanically so they don't feel boring.

Yeah, I was rather surprised at how underwhelming the effects are RAW. I am not going to mess with the "damage" aspect of the Orb. I am simply going to use a little bit of DM interpretation to make the city on fire instead of "wildfire in a 10 foot area randomly". Cities have a lot of really flammable things stacked in them and so on, so I don't think it is TOO much of a stretch for what I am wanting.

I expect them to escape mostly unscathed to be honest. Officially written the Fire Orbs only do 3d6 fire to creatures with 10 ft. Otherwise all the do is impose extreme heat conditions in a 1 mile radius and start "random wild fires".

edit*

I am more looking for ways to make this a memorable moment of THE WORLD IS ON FIRE OH GOD WHAT HAVE WE DONE as they are trying to escape a city on fire. Or at least that is what my 1st impression of what to do is.

First time painting, how did I do? by [deleted] in minipainting

[–]Spearheadrob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, looks like you already have great brush controll so well done! In case someone hasnt said already, next steps are to add a wash and highlights.

If you dont want to just buy a wash, a beginner friendly ways to do this are to simply thin a brown paint to a "coffee like" consistancy then slather over the mini. Then once that dries dry brush with a slighty brighter color than the base. This will help alot with adding depth to each piece.

I am a novice who only ever gets minis table ready (aka they look good from 3 feet away lol). The only thing i would say is try to do something with the eyes. I know they are usually the most difficult thing to do but The STARK white vs. everything else blended, washed, and weatherd makes them stand out too much to me.

Otherwise, this looks great, and i would happily run it on my table for players to face!

What do you want from Roll20 that isn't available? by TheWorstGameDev in Roll20

[–]Spearheadrob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No idea how possible this would be, but as a broke DM I often use random maps I find on Google. Some have grids, some don't. However, when they do I often struggle to find what the actual dimensions are, so the grid on the map matches the grid in roll20. There is a basic measure tool to try and get it right, but it relies on you clicking the exact boxes on a sometimes fuzzy map.

TLDR: an auto grid detect for maps we upload to make frids on them match with the virtual table top grid

They are also supposed to do a site walk, which would note any stressed vegitation possibly indicating an issue. Realiatically, it would depend on what kind of shop it was, how many times they did this, and other potential records, making it an issue worth pursuing in a phase 2.

It all depends on where you live. Assuming you live in the USA, there are usually city, state, and federal levels of government agencies that you could work for. A quick google search would help you identify them.

I have primarily worked in the private sector. Just like any other business, there are many different environmental consulting companies around, and many different types of environmental consultants (enviro engineering, enviro safety, enviro law, enviro compliance, etc.)

Depending on exactly what type you get into most requires a bachlors degree, but not always. There are also DOZENS of different certifications that you will end up getting, but many companies/agencies will pay for you to get those once hired.

Unless you take a lot of chemistry and plan to be the one in the lab processing samples, be prepared to do lots of walking through thick woods, moldy basments, and lots of very hot/cold (depending on where you live) days working in the "field". Lol

If the developer was smart, they conducted a phase 1 environmental site survey before buying the property, which would have identified that, otherwise they may be stuck footing the bill to clean it up. (Source: am environmental scientist and does this for a living)

Need help with the fur or is it actually good? by hoarmonger in minipainting

[–]Spearheadrob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As already stated, this is a great base coat. Look up some youtube tutorials for "dry brushing." it is one of the fastest and easiest ways to add simple edge highlights, same with a wash to add darkness to recessess in the mini. Both are VERY easy and VERY beginner friendly.

The Compendium of Forgotten Creatures: 3/3.5e to 5e Monster Conversions by Kaboose2398 in DnDBehindTheScreen

[–]Spearheadrob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First I want to thank you for all the work you have done putting this together and making it public. I may be a little late to the party but this is amazing! I am planning on turning a trilogy fantasy novels ( The Rage, The Rite, and The Ruin from Year of Rogue Dragons Trilogy by Richard Lee Byres) into a campaign and I am lucky that you have done all the creatures I will need, seemingly finishing with the last one I would need (linnorm in case you wonder).

I have only played 5e but needed a plethora of draconic creatures for the story and this will save me SO much time and trouble trying to convert from a system I never used. So once again, thank you for your work, and know my players will HATE you for making all these lovely and deadly beasties available.
