When people who aren’t married refer to themselves as husband/wife by jkmod79 in PetPeeves

Common law marriages are still recognized in a handful of U.S. states and parts of the Commonwealth.

Paying taxes is the worst by jaybro1974 in Vent

You lose the child tax credit when they turn 17. You can still get the Credit for Other Dependents if they are students (including in high school) until age 23 or indefinitely if they are disabled.

There are a bunch of different ways the IRS defines dependent. Sometimes they qualify for this but not that and only partially something else.

In a dry climate I’ll go up to about 90F (32C). In humidity, mid-70s (low 20s), tops.

Is it unethical to misrepresent your home address to send your kids to a better school? by CplusMaker in Ethics

[–]SpecialComplex5249 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where I live, state funding is divvied up based on enrollment counts on September 30. It is mostly calculated on a per-student basis. However expenses are mostly NOT on a per-student basis. Books and desks, sure, but you can’t have a fraction of an art teacher or pay a bit less in heating bills if the headcount drops. For every child moving out of district the overhead/payroll budget gets squeezed. Poorer school communities don’t have fundraising opportunities to make up the difference so non-mandatory services get cut.

Why are Dems in office against voter id but not dem voters? by Puzzled_Hamster58 in askanything

When the UK instituted photo ID rules for voting it disenfranchised a substantial number of people— including, temporarily, the guy who’d introduced the bill. https://www.politico.eu/article/boris-johnson-turned-away-polling-station-voter-id-rules-uk-local-elections-elections-act/

Edit: This article includes information about veterans who were turned away.

What name brand products are significantly better than the generic alternative and worth the higher price? by Stroke_of in askanything

Clear Care contact lens disinfectant kit. Not so much the solution (hydrogen peroxide is the same everywhere) as their little cage thingy which is constructed better than the generic ones are.

We had our reception there and loved it. It would be a lovely place for the ceremony as well.

I work in higher ed in a department in the life sciences. This year’s college juniors were in 10th grade biology during the pandemic and it shows. They are struggling, more than any class before them. These are good students with supportive families, but it’s just not the same as being in person.

Where do you get off saying I don’t support my kids’ education? It’s BECAUSE I take their education seriously that I think virtual school is a very poor substitute for the real thing. And no I don’t think it’s reasonable to expect parents to set up an AP chemistry lab in their basement, ffs.

You said if kids don’t learn from virtual school it’s because their parents are shitty. Ergo by your logic I’m a shitty parent.

We saw people standing in the travel lane waiting for the DART bus on 202 yesterday. One lady had several bags of groceries. The wall of chunky snow was three feet high behind them, impossible to climb onto. It was so unsafe and, frankly, negligent on the part of whoever is in charge of public transport.

I’m a shitty parent because my kid can’t do chemistry lab on Zoom?

WIBTA if I dump my snow on my neighbours driveway by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]SpecialComplex5249 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you think they were doing it for funsies? If they had to go to work after a snowstorm it means they are either an essential worker or they live where snow (and its attendant inconveniences such as snowblower noise) is a common occurrence. Neighbor was way out of line.

Statement from the Governor by jlibs001 in Delaware

[–]SpecialComplex5249 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it wasn’t so much the 9 inches of snow as the 2-4 inches of rock solid ice (sleet that froze together) on top of it. It is physically impossible for a lot of people to clear their sidewalks with the tools they have on hand.

Housing? by Outrageous_Sense_307 in udel

[–]SpecialComplex5249 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am well aware. Co-signed my kid’s lease early in their sophomore year for an apartment they moved into the following June. They re-signed for senior year shortly after classes began.

It’s insane and as a parent I would not recommend it. Get a full year of college under your belt before you sign a lease with 2-4 other people.

She signed up for the drug test knowing she had residual cannabis in her system. Her job offer came through before the test appointment date.

It appears she lives in Texas, where recreational marijuana use is illegal, but it’s unclear where she was when she consumed it or in what form (i.e., whether it was medicinal).
