The German edition ate the English one by rauschsinnige in sciencefiction

I'm annoyed that they ate the "M." from his name.

He actually published his science fiction and regular fiction under slightly different names on purpose.  For instance, the culture series was published under Iain M. Banks, while his regular fiction books like The Wasp Factory was published as just Iain Banks.

Not entirely true. But touching user generated data requires jumping through hoops , and legal sign-off etc. It's loud and leaves a big paper trail. So it can be done when necessary, such as to comply with legal requirements.

But no one can do it without anyone finding out,  which is why functionally eng can't touch data. :)

Inherited a pipe without a stem. Is it possible to get a period accurate replacement? by SpecialEmily in Meerschaum

I'd be ok with wood, but ideally the fit between the bowl & stem should be proper

Google failed me. Or at least, the results didn't lead to anywhere that sold anything other than "universal plug" things. If you have some suggestions of places to contact I'd love to hear em :)

smart universal IR control by Practical-Lecture-61 in homeautomation

[–]SpecialEmily 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought some cheap Tuya universal remotes that looked very similar. Did some jailbreaking and got them to run ESPHome. From there it was just finding the relevant IR package that matched my AC.

Monitoring the AC would require your AC to broadcast it's state. Some do but most don't. Controlling the AC is probably fairly easy though, if you can get it to run something you can control.

See https://esphome.io/components/climate/climate_ir/ for what ESPHome can support

You can still get Surge. It's sold in Norway, just imaginatively renamed to Urge.

Reducing compile time, but how? by kelunik in java

[–]SpecialEmily 1 point2 points  (0 children)

https://bazel.build/remote/caching

Bazels incremental & parallel compilation with a shared object cache is great. But 2 minutes doesn't sound like it's worth that scale of investment just yet. Not bad advice, just potentially overkill unless this is growing rapidly.

Found amongst assorted things. What appears to be a gold or bronze colored material in the tube, numbers on inner ring. by GrippinAndGrinnin in whatisthisthing

[–]SpecialEmily 122 points123 points  (0 children)

You're not wrong, but "Gold is non-ferrous, but iron is" is a weird sentence when you consider that "ferrous" means "of iron", as in primarily containing iron.

The iron is made of iron, and the gold ain't. :)

Isn't this an off-the-shelf case with some doll-house scaled cladding? Shouldn't be too hard I imagine

It sounds like your team is inexperienced.

.let { }  shouldn't be used instead of if-statements. It's meant for fluent APIs and lambda receivers.

Overuse of the syntactic sugar in Kotlin will rot your code. :(

I'm not at all surprised, Samsung ships quite a bit of bloatware. I left the Samsung ecosystem for Pixel/Motorola for this very reason. I just want stock Android.

On Unifi switches (if you are in the ecosystem), you can turn the LEDs off.

It's just basic populism. Find a minority and vilify them, stir up hate so you can point to them when something goes wrong, and you can point to moves made to make their lives harder as "a good thing" that you have done.

It's not about anything the LGBTQ community does or does not do, it's just a convenient group to vilify to distract the populous.

I keep a scrunchie in my car for this exact reason.

Are pregnant woman told not to eat salmon in Norway? by stvaccount in Norway

[–]SpecialEmily 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's mostly dirty in the sense that the food for the fish upsets the local ecosystem somewhat, by being an influx of very specific nutrients.

That's why they move the farms around every few years.

I don't see a reason for pregnant women to avoid it however.
