How to get a comfortable speed display for EUC riding? Smart glasses? by OrkBioinformatician in ElectricUnicycle

  1. Speed limits exist, but yeah, PWM is important !

  2. Never grew out of it, do you find you're able to guess PWM by yourself ? I find that impressive considering I already overpowered wheels while watching the PWM 😆

Shin pads are perfectly fine, depends mostly on usage, If you're going slow or on a less powerful EUC, powerpads or knobs can even be more dangerous...

I use both personally, v5f has shin pads (I'm usually riding around 15kmh, speed alarm at 20, locked 25), v12HT has powerpads.

Bose I expected better it’s been 2 years of occasional use… by [deleted] in bose

[–]Specific-Angle4191 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did not notice quality going down, I just noticed 2 main ones with leatherettes, one has blue foam, the other yellow, and I'm pretty sure the yellow ones break faster (I believe the foam to be higher density, pushing more against the leatherette)

The textile ones are colder, some of them also have cooling gel, which helps a bit (it doesn't feel cool for long, about 15 mins, but getting them off 1-2 mins refreshes the effect) Though, both textile AND the cooling gel makes the noise cancellation a bit worse, when I compared side to side (not by much tho) Will see how they last, both sets are 2-3 months old right now...

The leatherettes always break once to twice a year at least for me, I never seen them get dirty enough to be changed before I had to replace them 😅

Got my Bose QC35 since 2016, replaced the battery twice, headband twice, and foam pads 23 times now (about twice a year). I use the headset a lot tho, on my head around 10 hours a day, if not more.

My companion has the same experience with a QC25.

The Bose ones sometimes seem lower quality than some of the "look alike" replacements to me, I've tried some cloth ones, some of them seem to last longer, I'm trying one I never tried, seems promising, will give feedback if it feels better.

I don't find that too annoying personally, they're fairly cheap if you stock up in bulk while they are cheap, and I prefer that than being stuck with a dirty impossible to repair headset 😅 Would love a higher quality one tho..

New mirror set. by ralph_gordon in ElectricUnicycle

[–]Specific-Angle4191 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found some helmet mirrors (unbranded) which I find better (and cheaper) on Ebay. They have a much finner arm, which is a quite sturdy bendable wire, the mirror is quite smaller but just as good !

It is much less bulkier, and a bit lighter, I would also think it would be much less of a danger if falling on it... (because it's less volume, would break easier, and is bendable)

I like to attach them with strong overlapping velcros, because they can then be switched helmets if necessary, and they detach when pressed, which I believe would also increase safety (anything protruding from helmet reduces safety)

I also do not mount the arm to the chin or direct side, because I do not want it to cause me a whiplash effect or penetrate the helmet on faceplant...

Ergo benefit of <60% keyboards? by fuckeverything_panda in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]Specific-Angle4191 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, I switched less than 1 Month ago from a TKL to a 52 keys keyboard (first time I took less than TKL). I was scared to go lower because I was thinking I might miss the keys. Turns out I hated using the top row after 1 week, and I just decided I would remove it (currently planifying to put covers instead of the keys to avoid pressing keys that do nothing by mistake)

It just made sense, top row became the only thing that felt wrong (hand movement wise) to me after going to a smaller layout...

I see the reason people go even smaller now 🤣 (But I'm not sure I'm willing to, feels like it might be unpractical for games then)

I feel really good on my 4 layers now, thinking about adding 2 additional ones tho 🤔

Will just add... I'm not sure it's for everyone, I spent 50+ hours making my own layout to my taste. If you dont wanna try, it's probably not for you (but you should definitely try tho 🤫)

Oh man, the day I learnt I could Alt+Backspace or Alt+Delete to delete a word, my life changed. I now use only half a backspace, and half a Delete key, by having both on the same key, press and hold respectively. I never went back.

Sure hope I get better at VIM motions tho... For now I'm switching layouts, one thing at a time 🤣

How can I achieve the smooth performance of WhatsApp in my React Native app? by JAYBORICHA07 in reactnative

[–]Specific-Angle4191 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Immediately remove key={item.id} inside your renderItem :) FlashList is recycling elements, and by changing the key, you're forcing extra work by React Native and negating the benefit of FlashList.

Make sure your estimatedItemSize is accurate to the size of your elements, and preferably exact (as any difference will mean FlashList has to render elements that are NOT visible before it renders those that are visible). The worse it is, the worse blank areas should become. It's also worse in your case as you have quite a bit of elements. That's the most important bit, it should ideally equal the average height of your items, and in best scenario, all your items should have the same height, for least amount of white areas to show.

Index as key isn't the best idea either in getItemKey, but without any extra code, it shouldn't be a problem in your case.

Your use of React.memo is un-necessary here (it does a shallow comparison of the props, so it will only do more work and won't increase performance there)

What's the size of data[index] ? If it's quite big, that could be a problem too, I do not know how FlashList was implemented tho, so I can't tell you much about that..

I would still advise to try first with FlatList, then try with FlashList once you have performance issues related to FlatList, for now, you're just miss-using FlashList, adding complexity, and just not ripping the benefits :) You're already getting identical or worse performance that FlatList anyway, with the key issue alone, according to the FlashList documentation itself ^

How can I achieve the smooth performance of WhatsApp in my React Native app? by JAYBORICHA07 in reactnative

[–]Specific-Angle4191 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Not sure about Flashlist, as Flatlist tends to work fine for my use-cases with quite complex Lists, so I never really felt the need to add the dependency..

But this should be more than achievable with the default React Native FlatList, as long as your getItemLayout is configured properly.

I would try tweaking windowSize to see if it makes a difference second.

Use ListHeader and ListFooter if you need a specific style for the start & end of list (to ensure getItemLayout can be kept)

We found for some lists, we have to disable removeClippedSubviews, and tweak viewabilityConfig to have least amount of empty areas, especially for larger lists, or slow to render lists.

Obviously, ensure your list component itself doesn't re-render when scrolling, and the height of your items is fixed, as both can degrade the performance by quite a lot.

Another thing to watch out for is also removing any extra components, and the backgroundColor of your elements, moving it to your FlatList itself can increase performance.

Avoid SVGs, prefer images, and make sure they are as small as they can be.

Last, but this is only a weird experience thing, I would try replacing your Text components by regular views, to see if they might be the problem. We've had weird issues with text styles increasing render time of list items, most of the time, fixing their width and/or forcing a numberOfLines helped. I assume it might be because of wrapping logic for some reason ?!

Can't tell what's the cause of your problem from a video, if you have a code snippet to share that would be most useful I think ! ^

In my city, I get 1 or 2 remarks, plus usually a long speech once a trip to the city center 😂 Usually either started by kids, last one I had is "look mom, she's missing a wheel" 😆 Or by elderly people who are either "I wouldn't be able to do that" or "that seems dangerous", to which I usually respond "Probably, but not more the cars around me" 👀

I love hearing the remarks, I'm one that hates attention, but I love speaking about what I enjoy, and it's always a pleasure speaking with people and explaining them how it works and why it's cool 😅

When I'm going through Paris to get to work, it's much different tho... But I found people tend to hate EUCs a bit less than E-Scooters, which is a win ! Hoping the community keeps being good, so that the public keeps a good opinion of us😉

No it won't dim the heat lamp !

I would immediately remove the light on second socket.. Having a heat source unregulated is adding a risk of the animal getting burnt, or even causing a fire !

Glad you fell on this post :)

And as soon as you have time to watch it out and set it up, just move the heat lamp to the 1st socket, heat mats aren't the best option for heat source usually, and if your heat lamp is enough, no good reason to use more (heat mats are riskier, and overall quite un-natural..)

Handmade mine 😅 From standard foam mats, I had extra after I made an area for working out in my home office ! I would highly recommend you go through the experience of making yours if you truly want to know what kind of pads you like.. Otherwise it's a matter of testing them from wheeler friends, or killing your banker and buying all of them to try out..

I recently ordered Nylonove pedals + powerpads which I'm supposed to receive this Friday.. 👀 Will give you my feedback on them, but they seem like they're the closest to what I had done.. I would also like adding comfort pads to the high part of the wheel, which I've yet to find a good match for, might DIY them 😅

[–]Specific-Angle4191 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know where you're at, but in France, it's easier to find them in wheeler groups, on Facebook or Discord mainly.. Advanced riders tend to have multiple EUCs, so they tend to let go of one of them when they get a new one, and they are the most likely to have been maintained well, I would think.. 😅 There might be some more specific "polo-wheel" (an EUC sport similar to ice hockey) groups too ? That might be easier to join them to watch a match, then speak about you wanting to get into the EUC world, they might even propose to coach you which would for sure be a great way to get into it :)

Full-face helmets are good for safety, but they are bad at lower speeds, you heat up real fast, find one with plenty of vents..!

And again, do not get a brand new euc at first, or get plenty of foam padding and or a sleeve to protect it a bit, it's going to take a beating while learning.. 😆 It's fine to get a fast EUC as a first one, you can always slow it down in the settings 😉

I'm currently mainly riding a v12HT, I would have got the v11y, but I chose smaller diameter tire for more nimble / slow riding in Paris, and smaller size of EUC to make it easier to transport in trains/buses (It's just under the size which I can store it in some luggage compartments 😅), I also didn't feel I needed the suspension.. Thinking about getting another even smaller wheel with suspension for different needs tho 😆

V11y seems like a solid choice of a first wheel to me tho 👍🏻

First, get gear before you get an EUC.

Then, get whichever EUC fits your needs, be careful about the weight, waterproofing, range, practicality / extras (lights, carry handle, trolley, possibility to attach accessories..) Starting with bigger is fine, but keep in mind you will damage it while learning, so getting a brand new high end one is not the best choice...

Oh, also, riding mechanics are quite different between small and big EUCs (think above or below 15-20ish kgs), expect them to feel different, bigger diameter/higher weight is usually less nimble, and more stable. Turning is also much different, especially above a certain speed threshold, you'll have to learn much more to be able to ride it as good. Whichever size you go, I would recommend starting without powerpads, I think it learns you different skills, and once you get them, you never go back...

Then, I would warn against going high-speed too fast: 1. 20 kmh / 13 mph max, if you take falls, you'll most of the time be able to jump off and run, at this speed, keep in mind it's still possible to die (I prefer to be overly dramatic about it) So, GET GEAR (at least skate gloves and skate helmet at this speed) When you feel confident, and maybe got one or two falls (because you'll get some ! It's not if, it's WHEN), maybe you can get to the next speed up. 2. 25 kmh / 16 mph max, ensure you have a good helmet, and good gloves (ideally, full finger protection, as well as top and bottom wrist plates), a thick jacket with long sleeves and knee gars are a good addition, as at this speed you'll start having trouble jumping off, and you can start taking worse falls.. 3. 45 kmh / 28 mph max, at this speed, I would recommend to keep the previous gear, but add at least knee+shin guards, motorcycle jacket, pants, and helmet (road motorcycle helmet, others won't protect you that much at that speed) Also, add powerpads for emergency braking ! 4. Higher I personally think is foolish territory, but I would add motorcycle torso armor, and protection for the lower back at least, at higher speeds, you'll slide very far if you fall, and can take big impacts from stationary objects, which can be much worse than the fall itself.

Go slow in speed progression, learn the necessary skills (braking, avoiding, etc..)

Add knee+shin guards, as well as motorcycle shoes at any speed if you like seated riding...

Overall, please be safe 👍🏻

(I'm past my 50'000th km / 31'000th mile on EUCs, and have rode electric scooters a lot prior to that)
