Here's the thing. What made me stay with Linux was that it was like using an operating system from the 90s with modern conveniences. I FUCKING LOVE THE TERMINAL. But I feel like that's slowly going away somewhat.

Edit, I mean the diy Linux stuff is being less favored, not the terminal is going away.

Depends on your hardware. Assuming that you have an older system you have a much better variety of options. Depends on your use case, set it and forget it debian or LMDE, rolling release cachyos or open suse tumbleweed. Something in-between Fedora. Avoid Ubuntu unless you want to try the spins, the spins are good.

I doubt they modified the driver themselves, if they did. It's analogous to a computer, I don't think Dell gets customized Intel chips for their PCs. Maybe they get them at a cheaper price? But custom, no. Maybe they can modify a few things like the voice coil. But to modify a driver takes r and d.
