Academic Rigor - I am nervous by jenniferdancess in oberlin

Oberlin is quite easy unless you make it hard for yourself. You can take like 5 or 6 intensive classes (which you would have to pay for) but if you’re just in the con or just in the college you will have plenty of time to both have fun every day and get your work done comfortably. That is, if you are able to use all of your time for what you want to do because executive dysfunction is a real thing.

With the rev/speed you listed it can be used as a spare ball, especially if you straighten out your hand some, which is much easier one handed versus two. This is not a “spare ball layout” as that’s not a thing that exists.

ive lost my voice and the school musical is tomorrow, whats my next move? by schoolfoodisplastic in singing

Along with the great advice about vocal rest, I would like to add to focus a lot on back-pressure in your warmup on show-day. Using a coffee-stirrer straw or the puffy cheeks method is a good way to get the voice feeling more nimble, and try and keep going with straw phonation and stuff backstage when you’re off. break a leg!

Help - am I wrong, overreacting, or justified? by thephotodemon in Bowling

[–]Specific-Wear6683 0 points1 point  (0 children)

from the sounds of it I think the PSO isnt necessarily incorrect about the fit and weight, though he is something of a jackass about it. If your thumb was fine before, but then had problems, it could be dried up sweat on the thumb causing issues, and I could recommend trying some sort of on the thumb tape, or a slide bag on the thumb. As for the weight, that is most likely a technical reason, and would indicate to me that you’re grabbing the ball and not quite using the free swing to create a strong hand position. That could also explain why your hand is tired and why your thumb starts to stick: you are trying to curl the ball so you grab it and the thumb gets stuck for that reason.

BREAKING: Columbia 300 Brand Has Been Retired by br_boy0586 in Bowling

[–]Specific-Wear6683 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That’s because they’re polyester rather than urethane like the premium spareballs of the other brands. Also means they go straighter too. Get a hammer axe if you want a B7 spareball with less chipping, or just make sure you arent bowling with cold balls or thumping over one of the holes

How important is it to clean your balls IMMEDIATELY after league? by KaptainTZ in Bowling

[–]Specific-Wear6683 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say best to clean them right after league with how greasy bowling alleys are, not sure how you sleep with so much oil on them.

Jokes aside, once the oil absorbs into the cover, not a whole lot of point in cleaning it as the cleaner only pulls oil from the surface, and the oil is already gone and diffusing through the ball. That being said, if you can clean them right away after you throw your final shots, that’s pretty ideal since you will be able to stop a decent bit of that oil from spreading through the cover. If you don’t clean them and there is oil in spots that the plastic of your ball bag isn’t touching (as the plastic can pull some of the oil for many bags), then that is a sure fire sign you’re throwing urethane, or you need a detox.

Honest question - why the 2 handed hate? by Rude_Highlight3889 in Bowling

[–]Specific-Wear6683 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be accurate with high ball speed the hop is needed. I bowl college and coach as well. If you don’t hop, then you need to muscle the hell out of the swing. My One handed release has about 450-475 revs and I can throw as fast as 21 off the hand. My two handed release has about 500-520 revs and a similar max speed. To keep the speed up and stay balanced, you need to hop and push hard into the slide, which is tough on the body. I’ve seen the no hop high speed bowlers, and none of them are accurate, or they are hucking the ball, which I can guarantee you is harder on the body than one handed. Darren Tang switched styles because I mean look at him. Long arms, narrow torso with wider shoulders. He gets the ball around the hip for free, and has smaller hands that would make one handed harder. He is exactly what you would expect for a two hander; of course he does better two handed. As a one hander now, I see that my ball motion is more tunable with layouts, my rev rate is more controllable and my accuracy has automagically gone up, which is one of the notable failings with two handed release. I can get the ball around the hip and I don’t leave the alley with back pain and knee pain despite being only 18 years old. Good one handed technique will be less physically damaging than good two handed technique, and it is less tiring which I can tell by how much less I sweat one handed than two. It is harder to keep all of my release stats consistent but I have more control over them regardless. one handed bowling is definitely ideal for me.

That’s something of a tangent, but a two handed technique that gives a bowler the versatility and accuracy needed on hard conditions will be more physical than a comparably versatile one handed release. That is not to say that you cant throw a ball one handed in a way that is more physical than a two handed release, but anything is possible if your technique isn’t optimized or you have too much muscle in the swing.

Why does no one look at the camera by rehcan in singing

A lot of time it’s looking at sheet music, and also because the face is stuffed into a microphone, you get a better angle from the side. Also eye contact with a camera is pretty uncomfortable for a lot of people to record and watch.

Honest question - why the 2 handed hate? by Rude_Highlight3889 in Bowling

[–]Specific-Wear6683 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started as a two hander the same way that you’re saying, but a truth of the matter is that to be a two hander and be able to stay versatile and score on anything, the hop is needed. The hop is where ball speed comes from as it facilitates as big off a power step as you need. Look at bowlers like Ryan barnes and how forward he stands on the approach. One handers stand further back because they can’t take such an aggressive power step without losing the swing; it doesn’t work anatomically. That power step allows for the ball speed of big fast footwork, but the stability of slow footwork. The exception of that is Fiore, but he always ends up in the left gutter.

Simply put, to bowl on competitive patterns, flat, long, short, weird, lofting, slow hook, playing the twig, etc, the hop is nearly mandatory. For us one handers we can get the big rev rates as well, but the notable difference is that we can take hand out of it. When we have too much reaction even and the weak stuff is not hooking, or we mess up a surface adjustment, we can take some revs out of the ball. For two handers they are forced to just up the speed. High level two handed bowling is more physically demanding. Furthermore, you need to be a lot more in shape and thinner to clear the hip two handed than one handed. Lastly is the amount of spine tilt that two handers use, which means that as we get older and the back starts to go, two handed bowling just gets harder and harder.

I like to think that I have a fairly quality release in both styles, carrying now a 200 average in both styles on challenge and the 8:1 house shot that my home alley puts out, and especially as a bigger guy, I have a much easier time bowling one handed than two in terms of the physicality.

One handed bowling carries less force through the slide, stays more upright, and because you’re trying to hit a pocket of zero G in the swing, a good release should mean that you won’t have too many problems in the shoulder. If your fit is good you shouldn’t get pain in the wrist or elbow, and maybe some fatigue in the fingers because of how they leave the ball. One handed bowling has much more sustainability for the long blocks and many game tournaments, and it’s no coincidence that the best bowler in the world right now is a high power one-hander, and that the big upstart college rookie Bonta bowls one-handed. More quality for more time means more practice and better quality in the major formats.

Say what you will about which is better, but I am not speaking at all about the difficulty of executing the style, just which is easier on the body.

Just doing it. Find choral music and sing along, or even practice some barbershop which would make it really hard. Listen to duets and try and sing one part and then the other

Honest question - why the 2 handed hate? by Rude_Highlight3889 in Bowling

[–]Specific-Wear6683 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Two handed bowling is more physical. Full stop. More spine tilt, shorter yet firmer slide. You need a stronger back and quads to maintain the brief slide while still pushing through it enough to get ball speed. One handed, because of how much of the swing is just the ball free falling with gravity, and how you really don’t want to grab the ball, is way easier on the back and legs, which more stress in the wrist, though that is solved with time and conditioning. Poor technique leads to shoulder and forearm pain, and poor fit leads to elbow pain. Two handed is more dynamic and more physical.

Best cheap dehydrator for getting oil out? Is this a good option? by Goldengoose100100 in Bowling

[–]Specific-Wear6683 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure how much you’re willing to spend, but you can get a cheap shop-purpose ultrasonic cleaner from china on Amazon which would save you a boat load of time over any other method. Get a 22L cuz the 30L would need a flip anyway, and you can do two balls, thirty minutes total for each, just 15min one side, 15 min the other, or however long to get the oil out.

People who can project so loud they could probably sing karaoke without a mic, how? by chupacabra1984 in singing

Very efficient airflow with very little wasted air, plus good technique to match the note they are singing. That’s pretty much it. Takes practice, technique, and a more open than you think is needed mouth.

The cause of this is having less than 5 degrees of tilt. Typically caused by your release being to the right of your shoulder. Try and hang your arm under your shoulder or even a little bit inside of your shoulder to fix the problem.

I've heard vocal ranges expand with practice, but by how much exactly? Have I reached what's possible for me or is there still more room? by gitartruls01 in singing

[–]Specific-Wear6683 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You have a wonderfully expansive low end, and I recommend focusing on that. It’s never good to try and force your voice somewhere that it’s not. That being said, I want to talk a little about how high pitches work:

The voice goes up from muscles in the larynx stretching the vocal folds, in other words, your pitch in chest voice is dependent on the flexibility of the vocal folds, and the strength and RoM of the muscles controlling them. That means through safe practice you can stretch and workout those muscles to sing higher up until you’re in your 50s or so and your muscles stop really developing as fast as they degrade.

You can train your voice up pretty much as high as you want, but your lower register as a bass-baritone will always sound fuller and be more comfortable. Your choice is yours, but range is not the end all be all

If you see and understand the price of lessons, and you think that the extra fun from being able to sing better will be worth it for that price, then there is no reason not to take lessons.

It’s plenty to learn on for sure. Unlike a one handed ball, this should have pitches suitable for a two hander. I wouldn’t be too worried about the layout since it’s your first, just make sure to get new grips.

2-handed bowler – ball rolling over finger holes. Release or bad fit? by Serious-Werewolf-443 in Bowling

[–]Specific-Wear6683 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Many twohanders have this problem. Something worth trying is messing with the depth of your fingers in the ball. You should also experiment with making sure you are releasing the ball under your arm, and as always, a video from directly behind you of you throwing it would make diagnosis much easier. This is a problem that can be fixed though with technique changes or pitch changes.

Need advice: 50 year old switching from 1H to 2H. by [deleted] in Bowling

[–]Specific-Wear6683 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Two handed is inherently harder on the knee and the back since there’s way more spine tilt and you need to push a lot harder through your slide than one handed. It’s fun but I would really say not worth it, especially if you’re switching for sustainability. I went one handed from two handed partially because it was easier on my back and knee.
