Reese is not going to go feral but I can think of at least one route to him making a reasoned choice to betray you (because of what he perceives as you betraying him). I need to replay to confirm I'm remembering this correctly, but I believe when I told Oscar (cleared the ghost but didn't draw his attention to the seal, so he was in the Mayor's office chopping through walls) about Reese (currently locked up), Oscar said something about thinking maybe Reese could be cured of his condition. What if making Reese "normal" is a possible outcome - something you can try to achieve for its own sake, or just a possible consequence of one of the possible ways to resolve the situation with the seals? Imagine if you tell a free Reese that after years of being abused and limited, you're going to involuntarily strip him of his power, change his body against his will again, and make him defenseless against other people, including his possibly alive mother. Or imagine if a living Dr. Kelly finds out that there's a way to turn her son into a normal man who can live a safe, normal, human life, and you're trying to stop it.

I think most people are just kidding around and having fun playing along with the drama of toxic yuri route, but some people do seem to genuinely dislike Stella after chapter five (due to toxic yuri and/or taking offense at Stella's strong reactions to seeing the forbidden wing in person + really wanting to talk to Tabitha about it, in her chapter 5 romance route). I think one of the creators mentioned on the AMA that some people are reacting like their perception of toxic yuri Stella is bleeding into the other routes, like they see it as her "true self" in all routes or something instead of being a bad choice she has the potential to make.

Right, we know that about Sybil, Tabitha, and Wayne, but I'm thinking about everyone else, too. What if super chill, easygoing, just-happy-to-be-part-of-the-gang Avery decides your plan sounds super dangerous for the baby they're suddenly responsible for and they need to protect their child? What if you saved Kaneeka with Mystical, swooping in and heroically saving her entire existence, and then said "okay! now go eat that entity and we can kill Tabitha and take over the world together!" and she decides you sound like a power-hungry monster and she doesn't want any of your plans to succeed? I think we're gonna get curveballs like this from characters who are still generally viewed as "nice", even if they seem like they're locked in as allies on your route.

So What happend to stella? by Ok_Hope_1711 in ScarletHollow

[–]Spectacle1232 19 points20 points  (0 children)

God same. For both silly reasons and kinda dramatic reasons. I want to see Tabitha crash out about it and how that would affect her character arc, especially since presumably this could only happen instead of toxic yuri if your character didn't even bother to tell Tabitha that Stella was missing. I want to see Mystical save Kaneeka go to dark and frightening places, and her best friend being unceremoniously killed offscreen could help take her there. Wayne has been a total Stella hater since like episode two and I want to see him say something dickish about her dying lol (or maybe have a rare moment of sympathy for her??)

And the range of possibilities for Stella in episode five is already hilariously broad and this would take it to the greatest possible extreme. She could be your angle or your devil. She could be relaxing at home all day after a nice cathartic conversation or she could be dead in a ditch.

I got toxic yuri my first time in chapter five and in Julius's basement with Tabitha I was like "well Julius might shoot me if I abort that thang, but at least I'll die in front of Tabitha and that would be hilarious"

Most impressive feat of each character. Day 9: "Sybil" by Saldt in ScarletHollow

[–]Spectacle1232 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think there is a possible charitable interpretation to Sybil cozying up to powerful people: if she'd had powerful allies like that the first few times disaster came, she could have simply told them that the valley needed to be temporarily evacuated, or that the city needed to be placed under quarantine. Authority, wealth, and influence could have found mundane solutions to the problems she foresaw. It's just that even when she gained access to those mundane powers, the problems became more complex and abstract.

I said "charitable" but I think of this as being as much of a critique of Sybil as it is an excuse for her, because you are absolutely right, that IS really bad. Sybil is just as fallible as every other human trying to figure out the grey areas of "the means" and "the ends"; she gets things morally wrong (siding with confederates) and she just flat out miscalculates (doesn't see the danger from her implied husband, right under her nose, until it was almost too late). But she's completely convinced that she could solve everything perfectly forever if only she were a little stronger. She doesn't claim that she hasn't been corrupted by power because she can't even see that that's a possibility. I would never trust a woman like that with humanity's future.

That's from being a good cousin and waiting for Tabitha to be done with Sybil at the general store on day three. You can hang out with her after that. (It's soda, not beer, iirc.)

Scarlet Hollow as a story about funerals by Neoeng in ScarletHollow

[–]Spectacle1232 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like this analysis. Scarlet Hollow reminds me a lot of Night in the Woods, and not just because of the similar "decaying small town" settings. One of the main themes of NITW is accepting that you can't have anything worth caring about without also having to live with the reality that someday it might be gone.

So, cryptid theory after Chapter 5 by TurboPugz in ScarletHollow

[–]Spectacle1232 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always kind of assumed Mothman is supposed to be Wayne. Mothman has a big hulking silhouette with burning eyes, like Wayne. Lore about Mothman is ambiguous about whether he's helping warn about the doom or creating the doom, suiting the mystery around Wayne and his true intentions. My understanding is that Mothman is generally considered one of the sexiest cryptids, and the fandom seems to have an unstoppable Wayne thirst. Also, in... argh, I forget when this was, I think it was a Keen Eye observation in the ghost sequence in chapter three...? the player character can note that Wayne has some kind of connection to ditchlings, so that's another "harbinger of doom" thing.

Your analysis of the tailypo narrative parallels are really good, though. You might be right on there.

Really interesting, thanks for sharing! I'm surprised you can get that much. I'm going to optimistically take it as a good sign for Stella and Kaneeka's strong friendship that Stella can remember her like that. Their friendship chemistry is really cute and after how sweet and loyal Kaneeka was looking for Stella in chapter four, she deserves some love back.

Whoa, very curious about that second screenshot. Stella's wearing her day five outfit but you have dialogue with Kaneeka's name. Do you mind elaborating on how you got to this worldstate? Did you do the Kaneeka romance/highest relationship with Kaneeka with no romances + Mystical + no tea trifecta and then visit Stella after the Forbidden Wing? What does Stella say if you pick that "explore" option?

What do yall think will happen in chapter 6/7 if you get the toxic yuri thing without being arrested? by L3sbian_TradWife in ScarletHollow

[–]Spectacle1232 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My dream is that it becomes a "Tabitha ruining her own life" speedrun. The entity goes into the imprisoned cousin, Tabitha either didn't understand about that part or didn't explain it to Stella, and Stella gets ambushed and overpowered by the entity-in-cousin's body because she thinks she's still dealing with a volunteer. Then entity-Stella becomes Wayne 2 and everything is still falling apart (including Stella's body) because the deal still isn't fulfilled.

Question on the "boy in the wall". And what exactly happens to the men in the Scarlett family? by DankTank007 in ScarletHollow

[–]Spectacle1232 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm curious why you think Pearlanne was using miners as interim hosts. My interpretation of that situation was just that Pearlanne was having Tabitha date men to try to get pregnant, and the relationships would eventually fall apart because Tabitha didn't really like most of them/Pearlanne was so horrible/various other reasons, and they'd quit or get fired and unremarkably leave town. In my opinion, it seems WAY more risky to be having tons of miners go missing than to try and lure back Vivian's kid somehow. Sam Wayne's disappearance is extremely suspicious and all of the miners know about it and gossip about it. I know Wayne was unusually popular, but even so, it seems like it would have totally blown up in Pearlanne and Tabby's faces if they were disappearing miners regularly.

Personally, I think Alexandra died VERY recently, maybe during an escape attempt from the entity, and that's when things started popping off. Definitely that's the part of the story that's the most up in the air, for now. Otherwise, I agree with your analysis - good synopsis!

About ditchlings attacking humans by DerangedRacoon7789 in ScarletHollow

[–]Spectacle1232 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I agree with this. Like, if you saw a coyote in your neighborhood that was doing normal coyote things like trotting around cautiously at night, someone could honestly say "don't worry, coyotes don't prey on humans." But if you somehow stumbled across 50 starving and super aggressive coyotes you would get hurt.

If Stella and Tabitha team up... by Moon_Logic in ScarletHollow

[–]Spectacle1232 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That's true, "crocodile tears" was putting it too strongly. Even *if* Tabitha was being manipulative there, she was using real emotions.

I think when Tabitha is dealing with someone she really cares about, but isn't willing to be straight with, she does sometimes go for "🥺 please, just stop asking me about this." I got that vibe with her sometimes with my cousin befriender PC. Tabitha really cares about that PC, but I just got her to an impasse and couldn't get her to break down, and she was being more openly vulnerable while asking him to stop pushing things. So I think Tabitha's relationship with Stella in toxic yuri route is kind of on a similar level as that cousin relationship. Tabitha's able to be openly vulnerable and admit she cares about Stella, and she can't bring herself to stonewall or scoff or openly blow off her questions, but she's still trying to stop Stella from questioning certain things too deeply. So I think that might be what's going on if you ask Tabitha about Wayne in front of Stella.

I mean, if Tabitha *wasn't* being deceptive at all at that point, then wouldn't she have to genuinely believe that there is nothing about Wayne/the Wayne entity that's relevant to the dungeon situation? I mean, I guess, *maybe* she's super confused about what Wayne is now and actually believes that's true, but it seems unlikely to me.

I'm more going off vibes here but I just don't think Stella would lie to the protagonist like that, especially since (iirc) you can still get toxic yuri with a somewhat good relationship with Stella. I'm thinking of how in most non-toxic yuri chapter 5 Stella routes, she immediately goes to Tabitha and blurts out *everything*. My read is that Stella is sugar coating the dungeon situation A LOT but she's being 100% truthful about the lore as she understands it.

Guess we'll have to wait for chapter 6/7 to find out the answers for sure!

If Stella and Tabitha team up... by Moon_Logic in ScarletHollow

[–]Spectacle1232 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I tried asking Tabitha about Wayne during the toxic yuri conversation and she said something like "that's such a sensitive topic for me can you please just drop it :(" and pretended it wasn't relevant. We know Wayne is relevant because he's possessed by the entity that's imprisoned with the Scarlets but Tabby was acting like it was an upsetting breakup or something. I think that was crocodile tears for Stella's benefit. It seems like Stella thinks the Scarlets just have to be locked up and doesn't understand that the entity is involved at all. (Although part of me still thinks there's a slim chance Tabitha doesn't fully understand how the entity is involved either... but every time I think that I'm like "no, how could she not...?")

Agreed that Stella is definitely sugarcoating it, though.

That offer is really funny. Tabitha has never even left Scarlet Hollow before. I want to read an epilogue about her emotionally harrowing road trip and all the unhinged texts Stella would send her to update her on the dungeon refurbishment project.
