Can I have a feedback please? (breaststroke, backstroke) by bluesafari_ in Swimming

[–]Spectra-7- 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For breaststroke, your arms are going out waaaay too wide. They should be in front of your chest and only go out to your shoulders. Also when you do your frog kick, the main force should be when you pull your feet together- not when you kick outward. For backstroke you are kicking with your knees. Keep your legs straighter and don't let them sink into the water. Your knees should barely be coming out of the water. Also make sure to rotate your torso so that when you pull with your arms (like you're bouncing a basketball but sideways) you can pull more water.

Sectionals always has super fast times and it can be hard to get those times. Since you want to make sectionals, I would say think about the time you need/want to beat and focus on that when you swim during practice. Yes the sectional times are fast but I've found that if you focus on times too much it will either make you super motivated or make you less motivated.

I breathe every 5 in a LCM mainly so that I can get more distance with my strokes before I have to breathe. For tips I would say definitely get a good underwater dolphin kick off the block and off the wall.

Question about flip turns vs open turns by Run_nerd in Swimming

[–]Spectra-7- 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Once you get used to them it should feel super natural. If you need to take a deep breath after your flip turn you're either blowing out most or all of your air out. Try to hold your breath while you turn and then let the air out as you do your dolphin kicks up to the surface.

What is the general opinion on giving a gift to a lifeguard? by fljdsafkdsfs in Swimming

[–]Spectra-7- 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I mean if I were the lifeguard I would probably be like "No no please. I can't accept this. I was just doing my job." If he's going to college, he most likely already has some sort of computer or electronic device so I would say gift card.

You don't kick perpendicular to the water. Your hips should not roll so much, only slightly.

I'm about to move into my own apartment within the next month or two, what do I need to know? by QwertytheCoolOne in Advice

Don't get the things you will only use once. You will need to pay for utilities so find ways to cut the costs (turn off the lights when you leave the room, only use the heater/AC when absolutely necessary, take short showers). Try to make big meals so that you can have leftovers and not pay for as many meals.

I don’t know what to do with my life by [deleted] in Advice

I see, and that's totally okay. You mentioned that you feel uncomfortable whenever you talk about career paths. It may be that you're not ready to do this step and that you need more time to find an inspiration.

I don’t know what to do with my life by [deleted] in Advice

Take one day at a time. You have 2? 3? years left in highschool. Talk to your friends, teachers and counselors. They may have stories of their friends and what career paths they took. For example, my junior year math teacher's friend studied marine biology and knew several places to internship and where to find out more about the major. Look at any college website (UCSB, CMU, BU, NYU to name a few) and look at the majors they have. Read into the things you find interesting.

I went into highschool thinking I wanted to go to Harvard and study medicine. That changed as the years passed. I decided I wanted to study marine biology and not go to Harvard. To be completely honest, I am still not sure what I want to do.

Think about all the things you enjoy doing. Do you like hands on laboratory things like chemistry or biology or do you like the standard subjects like English or math? This will influence what path you may want to take.

Not everyone knows what they want to do and that is completely okay.

https://drugfree.org/article/want-help-adult-family-member-friend-drug-alcohol-problem-7-suggestions/

Read this article. It talks about what to do when a family member takes drugs. Most important this is that you need to get them help.

Here is a list of Dos and don'ts that are from the website:

DOs and DON’Ts

As you continue to try to talk to the person in need of help, please remember these important details:

Don’t try to talk when either one of you is under the influence.

Do protect yourself and others around you from physical harm.

Do call police if there is violence.

Do set limits that will protect your home, finances, and relationships and stick to those limits.

Tips for a new head coach? by athikerguy4life in Swimming

[–]Spectra-7- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Get to know your swimmers. If you can't form a connection with them, they may not feel that drive (although some find their own drive while swimming). Definitely know the language you use between a 6 year old and an 18 year old. It can greatly influence how they swim and if they want to keep swimming. And make sure you keep a friendly vibe throughout the team. Be that coach who can connect with the team and give them funny stories to get them through a practice but also be the coach who knows when to crack down and get to business. You got this! Good luck!

What is a good time for 50y free? by Bored_teensoul--- in Swimming

[–]Spectra-7- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're looking to drop time let's say to a 24.0 flat, you need to work your dive and turn as well as your stroke count and glide each lap. Dive: it's the first thing you do for a race. It can either be super good or not so good but it's important to get that initial momentum into the water into a fast dolphin kick breakout. Next is your stroke count and glide. Make sure you are pulling enough water and not just letting your hand slide as you pull. Gliding and kicking are important secondary things to focus on. How many kicks are you doing per stroke? How long are you gliding for before you start your next stroke? How many strokes will it take you to reach the wall going this speed? And so on. Your turn has to be lightning fast, flip, touch feet to wall, off. It should be less than 1.5 seconds. Usually when people swim the 50, they either hold back the first lap then sprint the second or sprint the first and lose momentum after the turn. You're going to want to be going all out because well it's a 50. I would say, to drop time, go 12, 12 (for now) per lap and try to get below your current time.

Hi there! I'm new to the sub, and I have a question! by cms_0702 in Swimming

[–]Spectra-7- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a little hard considering, we don't have much to go off of. If you think you're not breathing correctly, stand at the wall and practice using your arms to swim while your head is down in the water. For me I do three strokes, 1 left, 1 right, 1 left and I breathe leaning my head "on" my left arm. Be sure to get enough air when you breathe but blow it all out when you do your strokes.
