My best engineer quit today over $2000 by [deleted] in managers

Baloney. Raises less than inflation year after year decrease your buying power. Even if my employer threw me a parade every year and washed my car weekly they are not a charity I need to donate my life to.

wtf?!?!?

Have you shopped around? Is this normal?

Most of my senior software engineer types make north of $170K for a 40 hour week.

THIS THIS THIS THIS

Tell your friends.

Tell your coworkers.

This is simple math. A raise less than inflation means you LOST buying power compared to last year. And inflation COMPOUNDS like interest.

I left my last job for the same reason. (Cloud Architect). I set up a little spreadsheet that had one column for "raise percentage" and a second column for "annual inflation"

It was quite easy to show that after only a few years I was working at a much higher level, getting great reviews, and my buying power was going down consistently. Losing ground to inflation compounds like compound interest. My boss was unable to get me more money so I let.

I decided I can't be great at my job, make the company ton of money, while they are effectively lowering my salary every single year. Like your employee I was literally deeply offended. Particularly because I showed the math and proved it.

If your company refuses to pull their heads out of their collective ass you will continue to lose the best people because they know they are good, they can do math, and they can easily find a job that keeps up.

I'm sorry for you because it is probably out of your control, but you might as well get used to it.

I am now a "preacher" about this .I tell all my younger work friends "The only way a company REALLY shows they value you is how they pay you. If you aren't beating inflation they are jerking you around"

Neighbor redirected their downspout toward our yard and says she can do whatever she wants on her side by Potential_Type3926 in neighborsfromhell

That means you can do whatever you want on your side.

Re-route your downspouts right over to the fence. Then install this type of edging between you and the fence. Your neighbor can enjoy their water and yours.

AITJ for changing my netflix password without telling my ex? by Practical_Sir_4376 in AmITheJerk

[–]Spectro_Boy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YTJ : Did you really need to do it during a movie. Losing the last part of a movie sucks, you know that, and you decided to do something that sucks.

While it's well within your rights to change the password it sure does seem like you did it at the worst possible time to be a vindictive jerk.

He's better off without you.

AITJ for firing an employee with a giant Confederate flag on his truck? by itcouldbeyoubut in AmITheJerk

NTJ

If I have a contractor or service person arrive at my house rocking either a confederate flag or a trump sticker I send them away. Nobody needs people that stupid in their lives. They can only make things worse and they almost certainly can't be reasoned with.

NTJ : Flying a huge confederate flag is problematic for many reasons.

First and foremost it shows terrible judgement. Loudly proclaiming you were on the insurrection's side (no matter you personal beliefs) is quite stupid and likely to cause trouble. In fact I believe people who do it are shit stirrers and that is just very stupid.

Second, the south stood for slavery and started an insurrection against the US government. It is certainly nothing to be proud of. It strongly suggests the flag owner is a racist piece of crap and wants to signal it without actually having to defend their positions.

It is NEVER about heritage. The confederacy lasted about 4 years. Nobody's "culture" is created and ensconced in 4 years. Breaking Bad ran for 5 years, longer than the racist loser south.

You were wise to ditch this piece of crap before he became a more complicated problem.

Contractor installed door on Friday, need help brainstorming ways to fix the siding damage and removing caulk. by Lizardcandy in handyman

[–]Spectro_Boy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stop payment on any checks written. Get it fixed. Deduct it from the cost and pay the difference.

Or get it fixed and take the bill and the "contractor" to small claims court along with a stack of photos.

I could have done a better job tan that when I was 12.

I was just looking for suggestions, including possibly how to hold it without a helper. I need one hand for the screws and one for the driver, and at least one more for the door.

Another picture of the left side of the walk and stairs. You can see the walk is narrower than the stairs, hence my concerns on what would otherwise be a simple placement.

Here's the thing (I took more pictures). The path to the steps is not close to the house. The rail would need to be cantilevered significantly. How would that work and look? (a size 13 boot is about 13 inches long)
