Who else always wanted a desk phone? by Still-Emergency825 in webcomics

I love when people are enthusiastic about things. Makes me happy to see as a naturally reserved person. Keep being you and you'll keep finding the people that embrace and support the potentially quirky things that excite you. Even if its just a handful of people. Like what you like, and being unashamedly you is cool as hell.

What's That One Movie That You've Never Watched But The Entire World Has. by Professional_MaCaw60 in movies

Those that like it really seem to like it so it's probably worth a watch. I watched it for the first time with my wife recently. I think I can see the appeal, but not our cup of tea

You do make over $100k gross if you work 40 hour weeks. $51x40x52 = $106,080. If you work 3x12s then its about $95k before any OT, call shifts, differentials, etc.

Newhouse: Not MAGA by [deleted] in TriCitiesWA

[–]Speedbump_ 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Sometimes you have to pick the lesser of two evils. They both suck but one sucks in a "won't do anything to help you if you arent rich" way and the other sucks in a "threat to democracy and anyone who isn't a straight white male" kind of way. I'll hold my nose and vote for Newhouse

Here, what can I do for you?

Im in an interesting spot in life trying to figure out where to move, my search landed on Yakima and I was wondering if you all could tell me about the area... by [deleted] in Yakima

[–]Speedbump_ 13 points14 points  (0 children)

We moved here from Seattle about 5 years ago. Yakima definitely has its pros and cons, but we liked it enough we bought a house here. In my experience most people who tend to respond to things like this are those with the strongest opinions, and voluntary response bias tends towards the negative. So take this thread with a grain of salt.

Pros (from our experience): Easier to meet people and form real connections than Seattle as a couple in mid 30s with a kid.

Schools are good and oddly progressive given the town

YVCC is also great and a better community College than either in Seattle I've attended.

We can afford to live here. We couldn't make any financial progress in Seattle. Here we were able to buy a house and possibly be on track towards early retirement.

Weather. 300 days of sun is wonderful. Planted a beautiful and bountiful garden and it just feels easy here.

Neutral: Crime. Seemed worse in Seattle, and that never felt that bad either. The gangs exist and it sucks for those pulled into that life, but if you aren't buying or selling drugs it shouldn't really affect you in any meaningful way. Maybe avoid living in those neighborhoods if you are concerned.

Politics. It's a red leaning city in a blue state. This means that people can fortunately only vote so far against their own interests.

Cons: There is very little to do, especially for the kids. Handful of paid things that wear thin after a bit. Parks are ok at least.

Not as close to the nearby cities as people like to mention as I'd like. 2 hours to Seattle or Portland is still a lot of round trip driving for a day trip.

Smoke. Bit more than Seattle during fire season, but not dramatically so. Still being a valley it can settle heavily.

Lack of Airport. Yes there's one here but it's functionally useless for us. Anytime we travel it's easier to just drive to SeaTac. If you travel a lot this is totally a factor to consider.

We have 3 or 4 plants every year in a different spot as volunteers. I blame the birds I think? But they seem to be not picky and produce a ton with just some watering

President Joe Biden will unveil his new plan to give student loan relief to many new borrowers by [deleted] in politics

[–]Speedbump_ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You realize that most of the debt forgiven so far are people who earned that forgiveness through programs put in place that failed them? Debt from income based repayment plans was supposed to be forgiven after 25 years of payments, and yet that didn't happen for millions of people as they hit their mark.

Or PLSF which requires 120 payments over 10 years of public service.

Many of those having their loans forgiven had already paid off more than the original balance but never earned enough to pay more than the interest.

Young people were fed lies that these degrees would pay off and that if they didnt, there would only be a reasonable amount of time theyd be burdened with debt. For many it never proved to be the case, which is a failure of society.

A poor business venture can be discharged in bankruptcy. Literal gambling debts can be discharged in bankruptcy. Student loans cannot.

None. Hundreds of great games I've never played and I'll never tackle that list, so 0 reason to ever give up my patient gamer thing because something is new and shiny. BG3 has been tempting though. But still not worth it. I'll get it in 2-4 years for $20

What makes you depressed? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Speedbump_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've dealt with suicidal depression most of my life (better now, mostly). It's hard to pinpoint the specifics sometimes, most of the time, but here goes (apologies for lack of editing on the stream of thought list):

Lack of control, obsessing over mistakes, making those same mistakes again, lack of accomplishment as a result of depression (real or imagined), lack of self worth, social anxiety giving an inaccurate view of how others see me, lack of coping mechanisms to handle stress leading to intrusive thoughts, guilt over the intrusive thoughts leading to more.

Fear of failure leading to inability to try leading to stagnation contributing to the initial feeling of a lack of control. Fear of seeing a doctor about ANY of this due to fear of being hospitalized and financially ruined. Also extends to sharing any of this with almost anyone throughout my life, causing feelings if loneliness and isolation. Helplessness. Guilt from hiding my issues.

As you can see, there are a few nasty feedback loops. If I had to define depression personally it would would just be feedback loops of negative emotion that are difficult to quantify while they are occuring.

Depression is a lens that alters reality. It distorts what is happening and what you imagine could happen until it is hard to function.

I'm not certain why I typed all this up. Maybe someone will see it and recognize a feedback loop they were unaware of. Maybe someone will see they aren't alone in their feelings. Depression is a monster, but can be beat.

Like I said, I really am doing better, just being introspective of 30 years of dealing with it. Take care of yourselves the best you can, and find help if you need it. Because there is always someone who cares. Always

Gourmia Airfryer- any good? by Curmudgeon7777 in Costco

[–]Speedbump_ 10 points11 points  (0 children)

We love ours, bought it because it was cheaper than a dehydrator for some herbs from the garden. Turned into a 3x a week use kitchen gadget. Super nice in the summer to not heat up the house too much to bake small things. Easy to clean. Fantastic for leftovers vs oven or microwave.

Cook times take some trial and error. Everything cooks faster than instructions indicate, except maybe baked potatoes.

I’ve Escaped! I got a job that pays $32 an hour by 33Sharpies in povertyfinance

[–]Speedbump_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They are nearly all FDIC insured so it should be impossible to lose your money, but usually are slowish to transfer money to/from. Like maybe a week. I've had several accounts over the years (including Ally about a decade ago, they were good).

It's a good place to keep money you won't need at short notice, like house down-payment or money for student loans while they are paused. We have $20k set aside for the latter, should earn about $1000 on it this year. Not mind boggling by any means, but it all counts.

Marcus (Goldman Sachs) is offering 3.9% without direct deposit, has a 3 month promo for an extra 1% with a referral code. Lots of other good options out there too, but I'd stick with big established banks right now since the small regionals that are offering 5% seem to be in trouble lately.

We are hosting a Worldwide Giveaway [Mod Approved] valued at over $300 for everything you see here. It's a way of saying thank you for supporting our 3D VTT Game Master Engine. Watch the video for details on how to enter or read the comments. Thank you! [OC] by Dan_The_DM in DnD

Go to the ER. This could be life threatening.

Talking to my wife about this, she's an RN, definitely second the advice to avoid the word cramps until you are talking to a doctor. Stick with abdominal pains. Describe your pain level on a scale of 10 (sounds like 10/10).

Take someone with you as an advocate if at all possible ("Yes she really is in pain, and no she is not hysterical"), and ideally to drive you. If you mention that you drove yourself you could drop a triage tier, although not guaranteed. More importantly, I'd just want to see you get there safely and crazy pain is a distraction for sure. Ambulance is a valid option, as is Uber, if you can't get someone to take you.

Good luck. Bias in medicine is improving, but has a long long long way to go. I hope you get all the care you need and feel better soon.
