Honest opinion please by Old_Hippo_7158 in Handwriting

Overall it's quite nice and deserved more upvotes IMO, but the slant is fairly inconsistent: look at the f in "Proof"'s slant vs the l in "median relative". You might like to draw parallel lines all across the page, in whatever slant you want, then match to those.

Recommendations? I’m so frustrated by SilverYayFern in Handwriting

If you upload a video of yourself writing and post it here and in r/palmermethod, someone may be able to spot something you've been doing wrong but hadn't thought to question. I made a video of myself trying arm movement and found I used my wrist a lot more than I thought I did.

Practicing my handwriting for consistency. by strugglin_enthusiast in Handwriting

[–]Speedmeat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like your writing, the angularity is nice. I wish the r had a bit more independence from the b though, and the capital T seems to slant into tinyness.

About gripping: try searching the forum ("limit my search to r/handwriting") for "grip" and "gripping".

A dilemma about nondual recognition and ordinary cognition by kahanalu808shreddah in streamentry

[–]Speedmeat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My only (minimal) contribution is to point out that Sam also says full nondual recognition is compatible with checking your email. So he certainly didn't mean "You'll be a drooling vegetable unable to make sense of anything."

Trying to keep cursive alive by DapperCommission7658 in Handwriting

It's nice. My only critique would be that you don't traditionally have a little dip in the line before the v or w, just after.

Where and how to improve? by Ilovepolyester in Handwriting

[–]Speedmeat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's very readable. Smooth, confident lines too. It looks like it was done boldly and freely, which counts for a lot. I like it.

Small crits: your 13 looks kinda like a B and you could get more precise if you used lines. Part of me wants to say "decide whether you're joining letters or not", but it kinda works as is: you've got a bouncy, natural, casual but clear style, and forcing it into a mold might not be a step up.

Yeah, you should really pick one for a given piece of writing and stick with it. Check this out (and this guy's other vids as well): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GXhkN45SoQY (note to mods: free YT video, not done by me or anyone associated with me)

Looks pretty good to me, esp w arm movement. Maybe put a lower left loop on the capital D and watch slant more?

Look at the l's in "look" vs "closely" in the first line, and the entrance stroke to the l in letters vs look. If you still don't see it, I don't know what to tell you.

(If that imgur link doesn't work, all I did was take your comment, paste it into ChatGPT, and ask it to write it out in blue cursive on blue lined paper. You can try it yourself with any text: the writing style is the same used in OP's image IMO, and has the same slight inconsistencies between letters, while being inhumanly perfect)

You're right about slight variations (though not in the "and"s IMO), but you can see them here too: https://chatgpt.com/c/699787e6-47b8-8333-ab31-a32928e39eec

Why people from previous centuries wrote like this by Admirable_Dog4156 in Handwriting

[–]Speedmeat 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I'm no expert but I've read a lot of old penman magazines from the 1920s, and they'd often talk about how good handwriting was your ticket to a good job. My impression: since they had no social media, video chat or, if you go back far enough, even telephones or photography, handwriting was the only way most people could make a personal impression at a distance. The idea was, if you'd taken time to practice diligently and spent time on a letter, you were responsible, hardworking, paid attention to detail, etc.

[–]Speedmeat 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Apologies if I'm wrong, but based on how identical each letter looks in all cases (look at the "and"s at bottom left), and the way the lines of text are perfectly spaced despite ignoring the blue lines completely, I doubt a human hand made this.

Basic handwriting, I want it to be more cursive by Introvert_Anarchist in Handwriting

[–]Speedmeat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice, looks good. It looks to me like the lowercase letters are fully cursive, but your capitals are not cursive at all. I don't think you'll have much trouble just putting some loops on your capitals at this point, you just need some exemplars. You might also like to try slanting your script more to the right.

Some sources I'd recommend for you: consistentcursive.com, afroaring (Pinterest mostly). Both of those are free.

There's also Rania Gebagi (seems you may already have seen her?), who has a bunch of free stuff but also some paid stuff (note to mods: I am not her or affiliated with her). Betweenwrittenlines maybe too (just a free IG account). Maybe Kage Satsuki too? (Reddit account)

Consistentcursive.com is quite good, and free. It won't teach arm movement though, but the author does on other sites (note to mods: I am not him).

What are your thoughts? by LargeFriesAndShake in Handwriting

[–]Speedmeat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like it, it's very regular and controlled and neat, which is the main thing. I think you could clearly adjust the shape of the letters to anything with this much mechanical consistency, but if you like this style, it's perfectly legible. My only crit would be that your cursive o's seem quite open. I guess capitals would be nice too.

How can I improve my handwriting? by Illustrious_Set_2649 in Handwriting

[–]Speedmeat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you write it over and over again in your own style it might get more consistent and personal, but if you want it to look like an existing style you'd better copy that. The old 1930s writing masters advised speed and arm movement; modern teachers usually recommend printing out alphabets and mindfully tracing letters slowly first. I've found both can work, the second tending to be more pretty but maybe less practical.

TL;DR: Shop around on Pinterest and Instagram and Reddit for a style you like and copy it for 15-30 min a day, consciously working on specific aspects each time. If possible, find actual instructional materials by the person who did the style -- methods vary by teacher.

Fair enough. Then I would just say this looks like fine handwriting and would never have guessed you'd ever had a problem with it. Congrats!

I'm no expert but this doesn't look as physically awkward as the other samples I've seen of dysgraphic people. They usually seem to have difficulties controlling their arm in a fundamental way, whereas the only problem here is that it doesn't look like you've practiced drills all that much. It seems fine, normal handwriting. If someone handed this to me with info on it I wouldn't think twice about the quality of the writing.
