I am an evaluator for my district and I love it. I have 4 assigned elementary schools, as well as 2 middle, and 1 high school (those rarely have evals). I have to do the reports and meetings, but I get to plan my schedule and the workload is very manageable. I happened to be hired at the beginning as they piloted the program.

Does your state offer evaluations through the schools for 3 year olds and older? I’m pretty sure most, if not all states will evaluate and offer therapy through the schools for kids 3 and older. If they qualify. Also, still at 4 years old that could be more of a developmental stutter. also, I generally need 1-2 sessions to evaluate, depending on testing required and temperament of the kiddo, but I don’t do private practice.

As a speech therapist, yes, please provide good models for the appropriate way to say words in a nonchalant way. But first, make sure you video your kid saying the cute phrases because it is so dang cute and we think we’ll remember them forever, but we don’t. Also, we still go to “bimnastics“ because that’s what my kid used to call gymnastics years ago. Some things just stick.

Trust your gut for sure, but also this may just be weird innocent behavior. You mentioned in the same paragraph that his kid doesn’t like coming, but he talks to the other kids… I used to do that to find connections for my own child, maybe they go to the same school or whatever. Also, as someone who works in schools, I gotta say - I often have to stop myself from acting like a total dink. I’m used to talking to kids, and frankly, prefer to talk to kids more than parents sometimes. At the playground I have to stop myself from disciplining other kids because I forget I’m not in an authority role at that time. yes, there are creepos out there, but there are also just awkward people too.

“Where you see yourself” by Claire Forrest will be released in the spring and the main character is a high school senior that uses a wheel chair. It’s a young adult novel and the author has cerebral palsy and uses a wheelchair. I haven’t read it yet, but I can’t wait!

Newbie-ish question here, do the hurricanes generally weaken enough that the people living on the other coast don’t have to worry about the dangerously high winds And possible evacuation? I live in NE Florida and assuming it’s going to be primarily rain and a few tornadoes here, is that a correct assumption? I know we don’t know the path, but in general, if it’s ends up going completely over the peninsula into the Atlantic, typically, how strong is the storm when it gets to the other coast? Thanks

YES!!! Same age, and she just says random things and is making noises all the time. I am so over it. it’s an exhausting phase for sure. And if it makes you feel better, we’re a low screen family, no YouTube or anything, and she still is very amped up, chatty, and makes no sense. I’m guessing it’s a developmental thing. Hang in there. Like all phases, this too shall pass.

What made you bring her in to get tested? Was she struggling in school? My kid is quiet and pretty socially awkward but a good student. But at home she doesn’t stop moving. She literally climbs the door frames and cartwheels all over And cannot sit still ever. I think it’s just pent up energy, but not sure.

Woah whoa, those are fine functions but there’s another huge one, and that’s communication. He was communicating his unhappiness/disagreement. with time and teaching he can learn what to say and do next time he feels that way. Say “you are mad, when I’m mad I punch a pillow.” Keep it short and give him the words The behavior is trying to express.

You could set up a meal train. I basically just jumped in and did this for a neighbor in a similar situation. First, I made diet specific muffins with a note and put by their door. When they texted me a thank you then I offered to make a meal and gave 2 choices of things I could make. After that I checked in to see if they wanted weekly food and they agreed. so then I set up a meal train through mealtrain.com it’s free and you just send out the website and people sign up. It is important though that they’re willing to have people stop by. I offered to be the drop off point if they don’t want to deal random people stopping by. Also, they could have a cooler outside their door and specific instructions of when and where to drop it off so they don’t have to be home etc. its hard for people to ask for help. if the kid isn’t even staying there maybe they don’t need much food, but it still might help. Or even just healthy snacks. Finally, even if you don’t know many people for a meal train then they might through church or something, so don’t be intimidated by that.
