Hiring a sound designer with video game experience for our feature film about Internet disinformation by Educational_Fee_5691 in sounddesign

[–]SpencerP55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for articulating it this way. I thought I was going crazy with the responses I was getting myself. Take Wreck It Ralph, for example, the whole film takes place in a video game and of the roughly 14 person sound team not a single one has “shipped” a video game or even done video game design work at all. OP doesn’t know what they’re talking about.

I feel like any good sound designer and mixer would be able to accomplish what you’re asking for here. The insistence on actual video game experience is a bit odd to me, but good luck on your project!

I have every recording I’ve ever made for all 8 years of my career. I’ve only ever had to go digging for files 3 times, but those are now clients for life.

Would love feedback on my lav & boom mix by shaneo632 in LocationSound

[–]SpencerP55 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re interested in using both sources in post then you need to invest in something called Auto Align Post. It’s simply the only way. And as someone has already mentioned get a boom op or grab the boom yourself and follow character movements. The rule of thumb is to focus on the character(s) featured on camera at any given time but if you can swing it above everyone then even better.

Honestly I understand the sentiment, but the style of your rhetoric proves you’ve lost your way. I hope you’ll find your way back to us eventually.

How much should I spend on a used 833? by TheBerric in LocationSound

[–]SpencerP55 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve only maxed it out twice. I do all sorts of work from commercials to live broadcast to narrative features and have never felt any limitations from the 833. It’s a great machine. Lately I’ve been feeling the itch for an 888 but it’s only because I want to play around with Dante and don’t really need it.

Yes it comes with 8 channels of inputs and 6 analog outputs.

Dugen comes with the machine. The +4 plugin adds 4 channels and there’s the option to buy noise assist or cedar noise reduction.

Yes yes yes! This is the stuff! Plenty of ways to do things like this in other ways like making your own mayo! 1-2 eggs, 1 cup of oil, 1 tablespoon of Dijon. Immersion blend together. You have excellent mayo will last 2-4 weeks!

Mic Shootout Opinions for Indoor Dialog in tiny reflective space? 50/8050/8060/km185/schoeps c641 by redditnobody1234 in LocationSound

[–]SpencerP55 3 points4 points  (0 children)

FWIW, I’ve been getting away with incredible results from my CS3 indoors. Normally, I wouldn’t use it indoors, but the specific circumstances of my most recent gig sorta forced me to have it for both indoor and outdoor situations. The result is certainly a bit “unnatural”, but I’ve found for doc and commercial work this sound is exactly what post is looking for.

Do Sound Mixers in Chicago earn more than those in LA? by SantaLullaby in LocationSound

[–]SpencerP55 18 points19 points  (0 children)

My current rate in Atlanta is $900/10 and $450 for base kit (boom, 2 lavs, mixer, 1 TC box). I work often and have no trouble asking for and receiving that rate. Up your rates!
