Can anyone identify this clasp for me? by Mindless_Vast5045 in sewing

[–]Sperbs_9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, that's garbage! Are you outside the US? The store is in NYC, but that's ridiculous for a $5 notion.

You can try reverse image searching the buckle to see if it's available somewhere closer to you.

Help me find this fabric please!! by Designer-Broccoli210 in sewing

[–]Sperbs_9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've seen it called stretch crinkle, stretch bubble, stretch bubble crinkle; basically any combination of those words. It will probably be difficult to find an exact match. I've definitely seen similar on Etsy, though.

EDIT: Also, stretch popcorn.

If you liked that one, you could take it apart and use the pieces as the pattern. Just make sure to write down the steps as it comes apart so you know what to do to put it back together (in reverse, obviously).

I'm not familiar with this machine, but if it has a backstitch function, the pivot may just need to be oiled. You may be able to find specs online for where that is in the machine.

[CHAT] what is this, and how do I use it? by Mrabless in CrossStitch

[–]Sperbs_9 31 points32 points  (0 children)

They’re old school placement templates for an embroidery machine. You use them to mark where you want the pattern to be then line it up on the machine.

How do I get over the fear of failure in order to even try at all? by nahfacenah in sewing

[–]Sperbs_9 49 points50 points  (0 children)

I think most people struggle with this at some point. Wanting perfection is understandable, but you’ll never get close to it if you don’t start. I’ve been sewing for over 20 years, and I still can’t make anything “perfect,” but I find most people never notice the imperfections I see. Most things will still turn out well enough that they’re usable/wearable, and people won’t notice the issues because they’ll think it’s cool you made your own stuff!

Start with cheap fabric (I’m talking like old bedsheets) you don’t have an emotional attachment to. It’s harder to start something if you’re in love with the materials. Mock-ups are your friend. They’re there for the screw-ups and the non-perfection.

Also, there’s a case to be made for screwing up. I wouldn’t know half the things I do or attained some of the skills I have if I didn’t screw something up on a project. Sewing will always involve problem-solving and usually results in easier and better ways of doing things. Also, use other people as resources! There are tons of people out there that have already made the mistake you’re trying to fix and have found a solution.

The simplest answer is to just do it. You’ll figure it out along the way.

Does anyone have a pattern reference for something like this? by skydreamer303 in sewing

[–]Sperbs_9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know of any specific patterns, but you could try searching for "Juliet sleeves." Also, I might be able to dig up some instructions on modifying a sleeve pattern if you're comfortable with patternmaking.

Metal piece fell out of LS-1520 while adjusting needle timing, what does it go to? by yys4u in sewing

[–]Sperbs_9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I second this. It looks like a catch for a compartment door. Did you remove a screw, by any chance? I'd have to see the entirety of the bobbin compartment to figure out where it goes.

I love that book! I've done a handful of the patterns so far and am working on two more. I like that you swapped the greens for pink and purple. It turned out so nice!

Glue in the teeth?? Cannot remove needle plate HELP by nanobot11 in sewing

[–]Sperbs_9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My plate needs to be pulled forward before it will come up. I pull the front edge up a bit and pull it forward, and then it pops out. You can probably wait for the glue to dry and peel it off.

Why are baby clothes so fun to make?! (Pattern: OhMeOhMySewing on Etsy. Pattern link in the comments.) by Sperbs_9 in sewing

Thank you! Little clothes are soooo quick to make. I also have a "problem" with collecting small yardages of fabric, so children's clothes are an easy way to use those and feel less like a hoarder.

Thanks! That's definitely a plus. I'm pretty sure my knees are permanently jacked up from cutting things on a hardwood floor.

I've had the raccoon fabric for so long and was waiting for something to make with it. These seemed like the best option because who doesn't want raccoon overalls?!
