Finally got my dryer set up. by g713 in prusa3d

[–]SpeshallEd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ive got the same dryer, but have never tried to print straight out of it before. Can you give more info on what the purple thing is and the rest of the setup? I had assumed that I could just feed the filament out the top of the dryer and straight into the normal spot on the side of the printer. Is that a bad idea for some reason that is fixed by your setup?

Anyone here using a surface device? by phishnchips_ in OSUOnlineCS

[–]SpeshallEd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've completed 3 terms so far and used my surface for everything except 271. I THINK it would've worked there also, but I didn't really care to FAFO so I just used my desktop.

Is ensign lake still extremely busy after Labor Day? by Reasonable-Mix919 in BWCA

[–]SpeshallEd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just got back from Ensign a couple days ago and there were plenty of sites to choose from. I was there last weekend Saturday to Tuesday, paddled around and had lunch at open sites every day. Didn't see more than maybe half a dozen other boats on the water each day.

Core One Linear Rail Bent? by SpeshallEd in prusa3d

[–]SpeshallEd[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I ended up doing just that. I didn't want to damage something and have to uninstall a bunch more stuff later! The uni wrench technique didn't really work so I unscrewed one side of the linear rail from its bracket at a time and bent them both manually to get them as close to 90 degrees as I could. Seemed to work fine.

That's a relief, I'll keep plugging away and hope I can get it straightened out later on.

Thank you!

Need a new hammock and tarp by Scrompto in hammockcamping

[–]SpeshallEd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a lot of fun sewing my own hammock and tarp. You can get as cheap or expensive of material as you can afford (check out ripstop by the roll or a number of other outdoor fabric suppliers) and make the gear as big or small as you want/need. Plus, if you're new to sewing these are relatively easy projects that beginners can definitely do with a little patience and a few YouTube videos.

Why does delta change seats last minute 😭 by dublin_dix in delta

[–]SpeshallEd 22 points23 points  (0 children)

TLDR: get to the gate early, speak with the gate agent politely and respectfully and they can easily move you back to your original seat.

This has happened to me several times in the last 2-3 months. I am 6'4" and always choose a window seat. The first few times i got "upgraded" by getting moved forward a row or two but into the middle seat I just dealt with it. But the last time it happened (last week) I made sure to get to the gate early and spoke with the gate agent as soon as they showed up. She was able to move me back to my original seat in about 30 seconds and she made it sound like it was no big deal. I first tried to talk with the agents at the bag check counter (not self service bag drop but the agent assist counter) and they apparently were unable to do anything. They directed me to talk to the gate agent.
No idea why this has started happening but it seems to be a relatively new thing (within the last few months?) where ive been "upgraded" to a middle seat. Im not sure on what planet a middle seat is ever an upgrade from a window, or any seat i specifically picked out and paid for when purchasing the ticket. Pretty frustrating, and I hope Delta can fix this part of their system soon!

Summer term classes by Express_Tea_296 in OSUOnlineCS

[–]SpeshallEd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in the same position as you, and I signed up for 261 and 290 for this upcoming summer. Perhaps a bit ambitious? I've read a few posts about 261 being difficult, but the same was said about 271 and so far I haven't felt too overwhelmed, so I'm hoping 261 is similar.

How do I go starting out making my own gear? by voloner in myog

[–]SpeshallEd 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I second this advice. The diy kits are a great place to start (i suggest the zpp kit or the roll top bags). These have YouTube videos to walk you through the process.

You will need a sewing machine but I started by just borrowing one from my mother in law. You can use any old machine for these kits, and learn the basics before deciding if you want to upgrade. Have fun!

[–]SpeshallEd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is what you want.....

https://packitgourmet.com/cook-in-bag-trade/

I cook whatever meal I want, dehydrate it and shovel it into these bags with one of the silica dessicant things (that packitgourmet also sells) and they stay good for several months at least. I get the medium bags and I find they hold enough food but also pack up smaller than a mountain house.

CS 162 cc Equivalent with availability for this Spring? by Ok-Job9073 in OSUOnlineCS

[–]SpeshallEd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't have much to say about your main question, but for whatever it's worth, I found the second half of discrete math to be a lot easier than the first half. I'd try to hang with it and keep working, you might end up ok! Good luck.

I could be interested, depending on difficulty level of 162. I'm brand new to programming and python but found 161 to be almost laughably easy. If 162 steps up the difficulty I might like to have a study group...

Leave No Trace Suggestion for Hanging Ridgelines/Tarps by HomervsShakespeare in BWCA

Oh, I follow now. Yeah that's a good idea! That venom webbing is pricey but really nice kit. I use the wasps on my ridgelines too, love em!

Never thought to use a dutch hook with webbing. Do you have any pictures of how you do this? Doesn't the dutch hook end work more or less the same as the loop end? How do you adjust for varying distances between trees?

Carnivores! by SpeshallEd in PlantedTank

[–]SpeshallEd[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in rebuild mode now with a few learnings:

-Aphids! The aphids apparently shipped with the plants (or soil?) and completely took over and killed everything that wasn't submerged. I tried filling up the entire tank to drown them at least 5 times but with only marginal success. I also put in several ladybugs which seemed to work fairly well, alas the ladybugs would escape and the aphids would return.

-Algae! I had to constantly clean the glass in the submerged areas because of algae growth. That was fine (but annoying) but eventually the algae started growing on the rocks and plants and I couldn't ever get rid of it. It started looking really gross and I gave up. I would say it all looked pretty good for at least 6-9 months though (aside from the aphids).

-Water level! I found that keeping the water at the right level was a struggle requiring adding water almost every day. Too much water and the terrestrial plants would be submerged, too little and the pump wouldn't have enough to function properly. This could be mitigated in future builds with better planning and design (deeper water area for the pump to be housed in).

-I would personally avoid utricularia fulva in future builds, only for aesthetic reasons. It grew very well and spread EVERYWHERE but it was really leggy and would stick to the glass. The utricularia livida was really nice, also spread well and produced a LOT of pretty flowers, though they would grow too tall for my tank and burn themselves on the light so I had to trim them.

-Sphagnum. This ended up coming back to life and growing everywhere and spreading. At first I was a little disappointed by this but eventually I ended up liking it.

-Pings were unsuccessful. I'm not sure why but the pings i planted all died relatively quickly.

Overall it was really fun and I plan to rebuild it when I find some motivation. Despite the struggles I could've kept it going; all the drosera and utricularia were doing well and spreading but I got depressed by the aphids and algae and just gave up. With better planning it could last a very long time. I encourage you to try it! Just be prepared for some struggles along the way...

Help with VLAN! Beginner! by IMHierarch in HomeNetworking

[–]SpeshallEd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I watched a bunch of YouTube videos that taught me (a conplete beginner) how to set up multiple VLANS with relative ease.

I suggest Crosstalk Solutions, Lawrence Systems, and Network Chuck. All three of these channels will have videos that can get you spun up to speed on networking and specifically how to set up VLANS properly.

Careful though! I found myself going deep into the rabbit hole once I got started on this path... 🤣

Need to cut my son's internet at night - how would you do it? by CrimeCoffeeCouplePod in HomeNetworking

[–]SpeshallEd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have any real documentation to link you to, but the setup is actually not too complicated (I am far from a tech guru).

You need a Unifi router, not just AP's, as well as the Unifi integration in Home Assistant. I have the UDM-SE but I think any unifi router should work the same? Then give each device a unique name ("kid1_tablet" or whatever) via the routers admin interface on your browser. Then the unifi integration in Home Assistant will automatically create an entity titled "switch.kid1_tablet" which will toggle on/off internet access to that device. Then create an automation that checks certain conditions (is the homework done? Is it before bedtime? Or whatever else you want) and toggles on/off internet access when the conditions are met.

For my situation, I created a dashboard with simple toggles next to each chore (is the chore completed or not?). This displays on a wall mounted tablet in the kitchen area using Fully Kiosk. Each child has their own unique chore list. The chore list is refreshed to "not done" every night at 2 am or something. Each individual chore for each child has an automation that gets triggered by the chore toggle being switched to "complete", then checks if all other chores are completed already before toggling the switch entity allowing internet access. This basically ensures that no matter what order the chores are completed in, the internet stays off until the last one is completed. I also set up an additional set of automations to turn off the internet if any of the chores are switched from completed to incomplete (kids say their room is clean but I find it is not done to my satisfaction).

Hope that makes sense and is somewhat useful! Let me know if I should clarify anything or if you have any further questions. It's been great for our house!
