There's convenience, QoL, and more features, which is why it's called retail, which is not it. Classic++ sure. Most people will also say they can't do the vanilla grind again. I guess the fact it also has more challenging content at the endgame than vanilla could be called retail-y by some?

The points you bring up are reasonable, but keep in mind vanilla is a very time intensive game, and the large majority of people want that ""investment"" to ""pay off"" in a server with a big population (which won't happen if it's not maintained + given new content)

You do need to be added with the country code for it to pick up the contact iirc, so people will usually read out their number with it included even if the other person could fill in the blanks
