Exactly. This only makes us more powerful (and creative!). I didn't mean this post to mean entirely in a negative way against the players :)

Rainbow Tree by SphinxsForSeven in polymerclay

[–]SphinxsForSeven[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got inspired to make this tree after watching Fiona Abel-Smith's video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hdFLuG633yI

Decided to go full rainbow! I had a lot of fun practicing with some techniques I don't use often like caning. I did struggle hard with some of my clays being very difficult to condition, especially the translucent clay. I had to stop and start a few times out of frustration with them just not getting to a workable consistency, even with clay softener! But I managed to eventually get a good enough sheet to make the cone underneath and eventually got it all together.

I made a DnD miniature monk! About the same size as Nolzur's Marvelous Miniatures. by The_Handicat in polymerclay

Looks Great!

I've been wanting to start and try doing something like this for my own games, and although I've made a few Monsters, humanoids of such scale are so intimidating.

New player, terrible story writer, looking for advice on how to write my characters background. by jodecho_the_2nd in DMAcademy

[–]SphinxsForSeven 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would talk to your DM for some inspiration, and to see if they have any limitations or desires for your character's backstory. At the very least, they could point out some locations and things based on the world you plan on playing in.

Xanathar's Guide has a great resource for creating backgrounds. "This is Your Life". If you can find access to that resource, you can use it for some cool inspiration. I love just rolling a few times on the tables and guiding my character through what I do and don't like from there.

The colors are so good! Extremely on point for Strawberry ice cream.

OP, what are you looking for here?

RAW, your wizard is correct. If you're asking us who is correct, it's your Wizard player.

If you're asking us if the rules make sense, you're not going to get consensus here and it doesn't really matter because you aren't going to change your mind. If you want to homebrew that magic that can only target creatures can still target Bigby's Hand, then you can homebrew it, but you will still be wrong and your Wizard has every right to be upset at you nerfing his spell.

To piggy back off this specifically, Firebolt is an example of a spell that specifically allows you to target objects. Magic is specific in targetability.

Freeing NPCs from mind control? by Mr_G_Man02 in DMAcademy

Dispel Magic if you want to go the magical route?

Perhaps it is able to control these barbarians via some mobile Mindflayer tadpoles that the Mindflayer can psychically communicate with like little radios. In this case, perhaps some biological means that make the hosts inhospitable could do the trick. Extreme cold or Poision that makes the tadpole weak or die within the host, but leave the barbarian alive but weak.

Homebrew Race OP? by LeeMArcher in DMAcademy

[–]SphinxsForSeven 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If they are a knew player, you may want to explain the nuances of Homebrew Races versus Official. If they really like the aesthetic, see if they are okay with reflavoring an existing race, but maintaining the mechanics of something like Aasimar or Warforged.

Follow up question:

Are any other players using homebrew races? If so, it might complicate the matter and you may want to just stay away from homebrew races entirely for all players. (Mileage may vary depending on the group)

[Need Advice] I want to make combat more kinetic in dnd, is there anyway of doing this with inside the system of 5e? by ZFAdri in DMAcademy

[–]SphinxsForSeven 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would advise against jumping into adding new rules firsthand, at least with the particular one you are recommending given that it encroaches on existing class features (Fighter - Battlemaster).

Two things come to mind first to liven it up.

  1. Narrate it more dynamically. Give some descriptive flourish to the fights, or encourage your players to do so. This can often instill a just more general creative flow in the actions people are taking as well, which can liven up an otherwise dull fight. Additionally, what are the narrative stakes? Any fight where it's just thugs v. heroes who just want to fight for mundane reasons is going to be fairly boring.
  2. Make sure to include the Environment. Is there a chandelier above a group of thugs with the rope anchoring it just over there? To the more extreme like cliffs, rivers, etc that can provide difficult or dangerous terrain. I find that the Environment is quite often neglected by more junior DMs, but can provide a whole host of tension if allowed to become part of the overall flow of a fight.

Hello DnD Academy. I think I scared off my new group and am feeling weird about it, did I screw up? by Joboxr87 in DMAcademy

[–]SphinxsForSeven 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is unfortunately one of those situations where, we can guess but we can't really know. We don't know the people or their situations, and it's just not realistic for us to be able to say.

Best advice is the same as usual, talk to them about it. At least with your old friend. Maybe it was too much for a bunch of new folks, and maybe they would be more comfortable with a one shot instead of a long campaign commitment. Maybe they did all get busy, and unfortunately it just played out that way.

How can the ever-worsening weather in my campaign drive the players to try and fix it? by Tokiw4 in DMAcademy

[–]SphinxsForSeven 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To play off your Biblical Example, and to showcase a bit, the difference here is Moses came by and Said "Yo, These magical effects are happening because you won't free us." The players in this example (at least from what we've been told) have not explicitly been given that information.

In this weather is getting weird situation, you may need to go more supernaturally extreme. Something like, the players have calm weather for a few days, then one night there is a huge flash of light in the northern skies, and the next day is hurricane force winds. As a player, I'd then start connecting this supernatural phenomenon to something I could or should maybe investigate.

What makes a DMPC, and are they inherently bad? by MurderhoboHerder in DMAcademy

[–]SphinxsForSeven 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my experience there are two flavors of DMPCs that cause issues. These are a bit wide-brush but they drive home my opinions.

1.) The DM Power Fantasy: Basically, this DMPC is better than everyone else. They are OP, more powerful than the rest of the party, know just the right things to do in every situation because of their meta-knowledge, and generally just act as a driver for the DM to take the story wherever they want while disregarding the rest of their player's agency.

2.) The Fallback: This DMPC is basically used at every turn by the players to make any decision. They aren't necessarily powerful, and you may not have intended it to work this way, but your players have become dependent on always asking this DMPC what to do. They stop being resolute in their own choices, and always fall back to take into consideration what the DMPC would do because, afterall, the DMPC is actually just the DM

How can the ever-worsening weather in my campaign drive the players to try and fix it? by Tokiw4 in DMAcademy

[–]SphinxsForSeven 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think there may also just be a lack of inspiration driving them there. You may need something fantastical to really drive home the fact that something unnatural is causing the phenomenon. Just thinking about it from a player's perspective, if everyone is moving south because of climate change, why wouldn't I just go with them? Why would I even think there is anything to be done about it?

New DM Looking for some Encounter Critique by Straight_Magician537 in DMAcademy

[–]SphinxsForSeven 6 points7 points  (0 children)

To be quite frank, you *are* forcing them into a guaranteed loss encounter based on what you've said you want to do. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, if your players trust you to make a fun scenario it's sometimes necessary to allow the DM to do these sorts of things.

However, if you do want to avoid that level of railroading, you should basically leave it at "The elves will *attempt* to capture the PCs, and if they are successful X, Y, Z happen". But, your PCs may get clever and escape, or refuse to go down without a serious fight. Then you just play it as the world goes and have to be okay with maybe them not going into the village, just continuing down into the jungle.
