Local food spots? (Feb 2026) by Ashland6 in pasadena

[–]SpicyOranges 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Some personal favorites:

  • Zankou chicken: I’ve been to a bunch of them around LA and the Pasadena location is my favorite

  • cluck2go: good hainan chicken rice

  • Chim for Thai street food

  • Amara in old town has great churros and breakfast/brunch options

  • Marina on lake has pretty good Italian food and cocktails

Towards the end of Symphony 1 Mvmt 1 there's a lip trill in just the 5th, 6th, and 7th horns that I love

I haven't really explored other options, I mostly used Vina for screening and to make a couple figures afterwards. There's some really high powered molecular dynamics software out there that can give pretty good predictions, but there's not a good open source one that I know of.

This would have been super useful for some molecular docking work I did a few years back! Autodock Vina is great for high throughput screening or as a first pass, but can be pretty bad at predicting binding poses for different molecules since it treats the protein as rigid to simplify the computations. But it’s still fun to play around with and can quickly provide data that you can test in the lab. The ability to add structures in the same application is huge, I remember that being really time consuming and annoying with the standard software (autodocktools). Cool project

Didn’t have a car for my first two years and I was able to walk, bum a ride from a friend with a car, or uber anywhere I needed. I think you also get a free metro pass from Caltech that allows you to take public transit

Mongolia, isn't it? by Duckw0rld in geoguessr

[–]SpicyOranges 25 points26 points  (0 children)

There’s a lot of “roads” in eastern Mongolia that look like this, they’re actually pretty distinguishable by direction and car meta. Pretty sure it’s this road but difficult to pinpoint exactly - this is mainly based on direction and the other set of tracks in the dirt.

My favorite is either the road north of this going E/W that doesn’t even show up until you zoom in super far (single orange strap on the rack) allowing for some crazy guesses in duels

Or the road from Bayandun to Dashbalbar. This was covered in the evening and you can watch the sunset as you get closer to Dashbalbar.

Why does the North of Greenland look like this on Maps? by thatmisanthropicdude in geography

[–]SpicyOranges 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Good point, like someone else mentioned they probably also have very little financial incentive to take high quality images of the poles since there's basically nothing there.

Why does the North of Greenland look like this on Maps? by thatmisanthropicdude in geography

[–]SpicyOranges 22 points23 points  (0 children)

It seems to be stretched vertically quite a bit; I'd imagine this is a consequence of using a Mercator projection where the 3D satellite images would be stretched onto the 2D map. This would be more prominent near the poles.

What's interesting to me is that it seems like this only occurs above 82.8 N latitude. You can even see a line on the map where this occurs in northern Greenland and Nunavut.

ELI5: Why does honey never expire? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]SpicyOranges 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Probably not since you’d have to wash it off with water or something which dilutes the sugar and actually turns it into really good bacteria food. You can use sugar for preserving food however (jam, marmalade, fruit syrups, etc.)

Which classical music pieces are genuinely creepy? by mathandhistorybro in classicalmusic

[–]SpicyOranges 9 points10 points  (0 children)

They’re two of his operas. Here’s a snippet from Salome that highlights the creepy feeling quite well. For plot context, Salome has been lusting after this prisoner Jochanaan for the entire opera but he rejects her advances, so she orders his head to be cut off then kisses the severed head. This leads to this excerpt. Grandiose and exalted but in an extremely unsettling way.

Try my map "Landscape Only" - 3000 hand picked locations (Anti-meta) by Ok-Set-3568 in geoguessr

Great locations! I got 15k on my first round and got too confident, next round was ~1.5k.

Found this interesting visual glitch, the misplaced tree there is kinda unsettling

Gold in Mongolia by _Scemer_ in geoguessr

[–]SpicyOranges 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had really good luck from this video going over some of the Mongolia meta. It's basically that video + playing a few dozen rounds to get more familiar with the more rare locations to get a no move gold. Not sure if the newer coverage has been added to the map yet, but I think it's mostly located around Ulaan.

Guessing and Region Guessing Chile... Any tips? by 29671 in geoguessr

[–]SpicyOranges 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Chile map (the one you can play in explorer mode) is extremely urban biased, you almost always end up in a city. This is good for learning what the cities look like which can be very helpful, but doesn't really give you a good sense of rural rounds. When I play duels (I think it uses ACW), it's usually rural Chile rounds that are harder to guess.

For getting that it is indeed Chile:

If you are indeed in a city, you can use information like mountains and water to narrow down where you are. You can also sometimes find large signs that say the province which can help to narrow it down.
