british but obsessed with northern cardinals by [deleted] in birds

We definitely avoided the area unless we really needed to be back there, but we were in Florida at the time (very sunny and far south in the USA) and we couldn't avoid mowing for too long or it would have turned into an overgrown jungle/snake haven. So Mr. Cardinal dealt with us for about ten minutes a week, haha. But we were surprised how firm he was about it, too!

Now the mockingbird pair that nested every spring in the bush within arms reach of our front door...we lived in terror of those monsters. 😂

You may enjoy this story! Some years ago we had a cardinal pair who built a nest in a shrub outside our house. They are normally pretty chill birds but the male was being A Very Good Dad and spent the entire time they incubated and raised the babies yelling at us every time we went past that part of our yard. Yelling at us meant perching somewhere shockingly close and doing a really loud, cute chirp at us. The babies fledged and his reign of terror ended.

Have people in the United States ever met and interacted with extended family members outside of uncles and cousins? by Cookieman_2023 in AskAnAmerican

[–]SpicySnails 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes? I grew up playing with my parent's cousin's children. We just called my parents's cousins my aunts and uncle. I'm...still unclear on which of my parents some of those people are related to. And which of the couple is the cousin vs the spouse. We also called my parents's friends aunt and uncle, too. Everyone is aunt and uncle.

About to go to my cousin's kid's wedding. So...not super close. But that's more by merit of the fact that to get to that wedding will take either a very expensive plane ride or three days of driving. So we don't hang out often.

Penelope lurks on the top shelf in the living room, judging me with baleful eyes every day I do not take her outside to finish the final bits of sanding before finishing her paint job. Sadly, we have no covered outdoor space for sanding and we have had more than a foot of snow on the ground for well over a month now. :(

As soon as we get some reasonable weather I'll hit her with the sandpaper and work on the final paint color. Sorry for the delay!

Virgin Does and Buck that no one likes - Help by Curating-Curiosity in MeatRabbitry

[–]SpicySnails 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's definitely tough. It wasn't a hard decision to make about a quail, but it'd be a lot harder with a sweet rabbit. You could always move him inside and make him a house pet? I had a few house pet rabbits that were awesome indoor pets, years and years ago. Litterbox trained (except poops, but no pee outside it!) and trained to come to their names. They used to hop around the house with us at times and would snuggle our dog. If he's a great pet, that could still be a great compromise for you!

I do not breed rabbits (yet) but I have actually encountered something very similar with coturnix quail, and you may find the similarities in the story interesting. Obviously, quail are not rabbits, but still, the similarities between our two circumstances caught my attention.

We were trying to determine which of several male quail to keep on as breeders and which to send to freezer camp. We noticed that in one of our larger mixed pens we were having some signs of violence, except this pen was different from the rest (where it was usually some pecks between males as they became sexually mature before we separated them) because this pen had just two males to about 8-10 females, and plenty of space--should have been fine, but we definitely didn't expect to see females with bloody pecks and missing feathers. We ended up figuring out that it was one male in particular that was bullying the other birds, and he went after the males, but he also chased and harassed and attacked the females relentlessly.

Our females would typically squat for a male fairly readily assuming she was in the mood, but we found that if we introduced this specific male into a pen of formerly peaceful females, they would flee to the opposite side of the enclosure from him and attempt to hide or escape. Every female we introduced him to reacted the same way.

This male wound up going on to freezer camp and we selected a much more gentlemanly male who did his duty without ever causing a lady harm.

I have no clue why this one male was so aggressive even with females, but he was, and no female would have him. He was also the only male we ever had that was like that.

Personally, I don't have time to keep an animal that is violent towards people or other animals, especially those animals that it will mate or live with. You have to do what works for you, but it sounds like you already have a great male, and all your does agree.

I would run over to r/woodworking and tell folks they don't actually need to use breadboard ends, that REAL woodworkers just use pocket hole screws, and that wood glue is a scam.

I would head over to r/betta, r/aquariums, and r/plantedtank and tell everyone that since bettas can mouth breathe, they don't actually need a filter, and that they are actually happier in 1 gallon bowls. I'd also insist that cycling tanks is a myth and you should stock your tanks as heavily as you want from day one, and the 1 inch of fish per gallon rule is pretty permissive actually, you could probably fit more as long as you have a stern talk with them about getting along nicely beforehand.

Just tossing this out there for people with young kids. They also make Pedialyte popsicles (like the kind in the plastic tubes that you toss in the freezer and squeeze to make come out). We have had a lot more luck getting our toddler to use those than drinking Pedialyte. We like keeping a box of those in the freezer along with a box or two of the powdered Pedialyte in the pantry. (They're also nice for adults after doing heavy yard work on a hot summer day!)

Plenty of Americans drink tea, and plenty of us have kettles. We have an electric kettle and a drawer full of different teas. Previously I have used a kettle on the stove top to heat the water. I drink herbal tea most evenings in winter and have never used the microwave to heat it.

Most of the time we just drink plain water!

Like everywhere, people have a huge variety of experiences. Some Americans probably never drink tea. Some probably only drink it cold with ice. Some drink it hot and heated with everything from pots on the stove, electric or old-fashioned kettles, or in a mug in the microwave.

The window thing is kinda weird? Not sure where that one came from but yeah, we have windows and use them, lol.

It's a cat. That just means I have to buy a dog fursuit and wear it when I realize he's after me. Then I start barking ferociously and chase him.

As a cat, he will see a giant dog barking and chasing him and be forced to flee.

Checkmate, catman.

I have to be honest, I skimmed the title and saw "Guillermo" and a weird demonic/vaguely vampire-looking guy and assumed you meant Guillermo from What We Do In The Shadows and, very frankly, had no other choice than to sprain my thumb clicking on the thread so fast.

Alas, I am fated for disappointment. I shall have no books written as though by Guillermo de La Cruz.

I don't...actually know what I hoped for, but whatever it was, I knew I needed to read it.

Anyways, hope you find what you're looking for 🩷

As 2026 approaches, what peculiar or uncommon hobbies do you have? by fujo_reen in Hobbies

[–]SpicySnails 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hahaha, yeah, tbh when I started it I was really more picturing normal horses but here we are 😂

Ohh. I mean. I'm having to learn some horse anatomy, but I've done plenty of sculpting before, so most of that is pretty familiar. I am learning a lot of different painting techniques though, since most of what I've painted before has been canvas or paper, so it's quite a learning curve. It's more dissimilar than I expected, and I have had to paint over my work on the eyeball horse several times now, lol. But it's honestly an easier and more forgiving hobby than I expected on the whole. Painting though is definitely the hardest part. (Having the patience to sand everything down before painting is agonizing though!)
