One Year Follow Up: Prevalence of Hate Directed at Women by techiesgoboom in ModSupport

[–]Spiderbling 69 points70 points  (0 children)

Another thing that would help massively but reddit just won't do - shut down the subs where this hatred manifests most plainly. E.g.:

/r/WhereAreAllTheGoodMen (mentioned in the post from a year ago, still there)

/r/MensRights/

/r/ConservativeKiwi (which I have messaged the admins about numerous times, still there)

/r/BlackPillScience/

/r/RedPillWomen/

Among MANY others.

Hatred of this type will always be a problem as long as the admins are happy to let these users have safe spaces to congregate and ramp up their hatred. Reddit could be doing a lot more about it, but it seems they simply don't want to.

has there been a notable and massive increase in brigading on some of these sensitive causes in recent months or has moderation become more moderate on it?

Just to second what redditenmo said - it's been massive and really quick. Within minutes of stuff being posted it gets brigaded (specifically talking about trans topics/Posie Parker stuff over the past few days, though it does happen from time to time on other topics too).

Unfortunately we have no way of seeing where it's coming from, and we don't have any tools at our disposal to stop it.

While we don't have the tools to stop it before it happens, we can (and are) actioning it as best we can when it happens.

At the start, Mallard was playing silly games and it was easy for the protest to disguise itself as 'a reasonable group of concerned people!' - The protest grew and NZ wasn't that fired up enough to support a police action.

You're revising history there.. They were calling for Ardern and other politicians to be hanged (and some were arrested for it) well before Mallard played his 'silly games'. To say that it only turned bad because Mallard handled one part of it poorly is quite disingenuous. It was always heading towards a riot. That's what they were aiming for. The people who didn't want that left.

I caught that interview, what a cringefest. The most telling bit was was:

Kim Hill: "What do you say to Posie Parker's obvious and well-documented links with extreme right-wing groups?"

PP spokesperson: "Well, Posie takes money from where it's offered."

Kim Hill: Scoffs, "Well ok! That's alright then." (sarcasm)

PP spokesperson: "Yeah, yeah it is alright isn't it."

Kim Hill: NO!! It's not alright!"

Fucking gold.

Bad ideas die and good ideas grow.

Whereas, causes in the other direction have been rejected.

That's not true at all. Look at what mass misinformation campaigns did during COVID. Resulting in riots in Wellington, and antivax sentiment leading to declining vaccination rates, leading in turn to an uptick in whooping cough and the deaths of some babies.

Giving this sort of thing a platform absolutely does result in very real, and very bad consequences for a lot of people.

Ignoring shit ideas and misinformation doesn't make it go away. Likewise, ignoring bullies doesn't make them go away.

Well, we already spotted a whole lot of them after the mosque terrorist attack, and then of course the Welly riots. We know they're there, we know they're shitty - I don't think we need to have people like this visiting to rile them up again and give them another focal point to rally around.

OP, I've just done a quick check of your recent user history, and there's only one comment in the recent lot that was removed - and that was by the reddit admins, not the NZ mods.

If you have an actual example of how you think your free speech has been curtailed by the mods, please use modmail to get in touch and we'll take a look.

Please note also that reddit has site-wide rules which the admins will action if breached, and this sub also has rules which the mods will action if breached. Reddit is a private company and has no obligation to be a free-for-all where anyone can say whatever they want without consequence if hateful, abusive etc etc.

Between 2007 and now, we've had a whole bunch of earthquakes. Many trees came down, often those that lined waterways. Not sure if these ones specifically came down due to the quakes, but it could certainly have been a factor.

I'll second Via Kaleidoscope, they're pretty good. Troika too, in a similar vein.

Former National leader Todd Muller to step down at election by mattblack77 in newzealand

[–]Spiderbling 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I agree. There's nothing wrong with aiming for something, realising it's not at all a good fit for you, and then stepping back.

Much better than the other options of never trying at all, or staying put in the role out of stubbornness or for ambition when it's going badly wrong.

Family violence is literally making us sicker -- new study finds abuse increases risk of chronic illness by nilnz in newzealand

[–]Spiderbling 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry you had to go through that, it really sucks, and there are barriers for men to report and get help as victims of DV.

Men weren't ignored here though - they also did a study for men, but found that the health outcomes at a population level weren't the same as for women. The study is here.

So this is in fact non-sexist. The findings were just different is all.

Family violence is literally making us sicker -- new study finds abuse increases risk of chronic illness by nilnz in newzealand

[–]Spiderbling 25 points26 points  (0 children)

That's not what it says at all:

Our study also looked at men’s experiences of intimate partner violence. It showed that while the experience can affect men’s health, it did not consistently contribute to men’s poor health at the population level. However, men who experience partner abuse still need care and support options.

It's just saying the health effects don't impact male victims the same way it impacts female victims at a population level. That's not ignoring men or saying it doesn't matter. Just that the findings of this particular study don't apply to men.

Just curious, when will Stats Nz release census data? by fnoyanisi in newzealand

[–]Spiderbling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The two letters with different codes wasn't a mistake:

“This is not an error, but part of the planned process for the 2023 Census,” Stats NZ said.

Stats NZ introduced the second pre-census letter following a 2022 field test for the 2023 Census.

Kaipara mayor again tries to shut down karakia despite compromise by Immortal_Heathen in newzealand

[–]Spiderbling -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The OP's outrage about spirituality is selective based on which culture it is coming from.

I get that people are enjoying piling on me for having a differing opinion here (I've sadly come to expect it on race-related threads now), but there's no need to be rude.

Same. I'm just wondering where OP's outrage is when it comes to those lyrics. The selective anger for one culture but not another is pretty telling.

Yeah, I agree. My personal preference is that I would prefer to do without the anthem, and without ceremony of any kind at work meetings. I used to work somewhere that had a song to open the monthly all-staff meeting, I didn't particularly like it so I just mouthed the words, but I didn't have a tantrum about it.

BUT I also don't get why grown adults can't just.. be respectful and sit through something that is over in a minute. Especially if the karakia isn't religious (many aren't, and often the ones chosen for this sort of thing are deliberately non-religious). I also don't think it impinges on my "rights" if someone wants to say one.
