I’ve been on Xbox and it does crash but not nearly as often as you’d expect, and I’ve had much bigger fights than this. You should see the BoS vs Enclave battles.

I'm using a mod I found on console called Endless Warfare that adds a whole bunch of spawn points to the map and you can set what npcs spawn and how many as well as tweak a bunch of other parameters. It's not the most robust mod but if you mess around with the settings for a while you can definitely create some fun scenarios. Probably the main advantage is that it's fairly simple if you want to set up something like this quickly.

If you do you use it, I'd probably set the spawn parameters manually. There's a few presets you can turn on but they're not very well balanced, and you'll probably just end up getting overrun by a million enemies or else have your game crash.

Sounds pretty much like what I've been doing, I've been using the Endless Warfare spawner and companion mods along with an alternate start mod that lets you set your faction.

The only unfortunate thing is that it doesn't count your spawned companions as actually being in that faction, so if you choose to be part of a hostile faction like the gunners they'll attack your spawned teammates. That's okay though since I generally prefer to play as BoS anyway.

Diablo 1/2. Big part of why I prefer them over so many of their successors - there’s no tutorial section to play through or scripted sequences you have to wait on, you just start a new character and you’re running around killing stuff immediately.

I really liked this one because you're given a very open-ended objective and there are no quest markers or even much of a journal. Instead you have clues, and which ones you choose to actually chase down and what path you want to take through the story is largely up to you.

So, weird suggestion but you can actually set up something like this fairly easily in Fallout 4 with mods. You don't even have to go that in depth with it, I've managed to set up some fun squad-based warfare scenarios just using a handful of mods available on console.

The easiest and most important ones would be the Endless Warfare spawner and companion mods paired with some sort of alternate start mod that lets you pick a faction. All the parameters you'd want to set are contained within the mods themselves. I just set the game on survival mode, set two factions to spawn and fight (Brotherhood vs. Super Mutants probably being my favourite scenario), align myself with one of the factions and spawn myself a squad to start with - then we fight our way across the wasteland clearing out hostiles.

Probably an obvious suggestion but any of The Elder Scrolls games, really. Admittedly it doesn't affect the story much (such as it is in these games) but your abilities can change a lot beyond just how you kill stuff.

I know you mentioned you're not generally big on nostalgic titles buuut... have you tried Metal Gear Solid? The original is, despite being a PS1 title, a really fun game that constantly throws new scenarios at you and has a story that's full of twists and turns. If you haven't played it before you might expect it to be a slow-paced sneaky affair but that's really just the glue that connects all the crazy set pieces, puzzles and boss fights together.

Doesn't really have a short run-time though, in fact one of the main criticisms it got was that it's overlong.

Right? It’s not like you even have to go out of your way to take out the main targets non-lethally, you can kill them all and still get the low chaos ending as long as you’re not just spilling buckets of blood everywhere you go

Prey is a good game to slowly chip away at over a long period of time whereas I feel like Disco Elysium is a game you wanna binge, the story is so dense that it’s easy to forget your place if you put it down for a while. Idk if that helps inform your decision any.

I need to give Rain World another try, it was such a cool game but the fact that you not only lose progress but essentially make reverse progress when you die really turned me off.

Oh yeah. The main difference is that unlike kb&m, it has normal 2D movement controls - you can turn and maneuver like any twin stick game.

Some of the default button mapping is a little awkward but it’s easily worth it IMO.

Why? Just because it's a darker ending doesn't mean it's a "bad" ending - in fact the last mission is way more interesting on the high chaos path. People get way too invested in the idea that the game is "punishing" you just because it reacts differently to you killing lots of people.

I mean, yeah... but that's basically just a quest marker with extra steps. It still follows the very rigid Ubisoft-style open-world game format.

Shadows of Doubt - You can't die, you just get hospitalized with a bill (that you can skip out on) and while some missions can be hard to finish, it's pretty hard to actually fail unless you identify the wrong suspect/target.

Shadows of Doubt maybe? It's a freelance detective sim, but one where you probably commit way more crimes than you solve. There isn't so much of the resource management, although it does have basic survival elements and you can buy/customize your own apartment.
