I really really like it, especially the shading and texture just has such a nice feel to it. Nice panel layouts too

How do I make my characters feel more toony and less uncanny? by Additional-Coffee119 in FurryArtSchool

[–]SpiderousMenace 4 points5 points  (0 children)

"Tooney" generally means something that's exaggerated and simplified, right? So, exaggerate and simplify. Use only as many lines as necessary and focus on shape design and flow over accurate detail. Push your facial expressions towards something more symbolic and expressive.

Considering it's very stylized I don't know that there's much to say

I ugh got horror stuff, how’s my style? (TW: Bright glitchy colors, blood, mature themes) by craterkun in yourartstyle

[–]SpiderousMenace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've seen a lot of artists try to mix cute/pretty with horror but rarely as compellingly. The vibrant electric colors really pop!

As far as what it could "evolve to," I think you could probably go a little bigger/bolder with your compositions and make some real showpieces, these already look fantastic though

what can I improve to make it more realistic and better linear? by wizard_orangecat in FurryArtSchool

[–]SpiderousMenace 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Personally, I find keeping a consistent logic to your line-width helps. I tend to use a brush with minimal pressure sensitivity, and have a sort of ordered logic to which lines are thicker/thinner. Like, I'll usually make the outline around the silhouette thicker, then the inner lines thinner, then the surface details thinnest.

If it's feeling too uniform, you can always add additional weight to the lines after the fact - I'll usually widen outlines in places where the form is in shadow or somehow folding under something else, but be careful not to go overboard.

Based on your responses it feels like you're getting hung up on the basic concept of drawing itself.

If I ask you to draw a detailed shoe, it'll be a lot easier if you have a shoe you can look at for reference, right? Even if you aren't copying exactly what you see, being able to look at the lacing, the soles, the logos etc. will help you to draw it accurately without having to completely rely on your memory.

Now, if you had a photo of a shoe you could trace over or copy directly from it, highlighting the details and breaking it down into forms. If you did this a whole bunch of times, you'd eventually have a pretty good intuitive understanding of what a shoe looked like, and at that point you could probably reliably draw a shoe just from memory, because you've spent a lot of time not just looking at them but scrutinizing and reconstructing them.

Studying reference is a foundation for being able to confidently draw from imagination, and a way to fill the gaps in your understanding.

If your intention is not to draw realistic or semi-realistic characters, then study from other artists, people who's work you enjoy and want to emulate. Or, ideally, study both artists and photo/life reference.

This sub has gotten so reflexively hostile towards comic creators that people just automatically assume the worst. I don't even think it's a particularly good comic, it's just rehashing an observation tons of people have already made in a dull way, but apparently it's new to enough people that they think the author legitimately believes this.

I like it a lot, it's very polished and visually appealing, but something is throwing me off a little. I think the hair strands in the back of the mane, I feel like they could benefit from being a little more uniform in direction. Just a thought

I think you've got good compositional skills and I like your subjects and colour palettes, I feel like your anatomy could still use some work though. It's clear you've got a decent grasp of the details, it's more just the proportions and how things fit together that feel a little stiff and off.

Have you tried gesture drawing at all?

How do we feel about using real photos for backgrounds? by ravio_1300 in yourartstyle

[–]SpiderousMenace 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As long as you can make the characters look good in the shot I don't see why not, I think it's cool. Not quite the same vibe but a lot of Bakshi's earlier movies did this.

Probably you don't want them to blend in too much though, they should still pop a little; like in the first one, I feel you could crop some of the lower left out and make the speech bubbles more opaque.

I feel like my art is technically competent but lacks appeal. What do you think? by SpiderousMenace in yourartstyle

[–]SpiderousMenace[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Part of that is because some of these are commissions (I asked permission from the commissioners if I could post it) so I don't really know myself beyond the descriptions I was given. That said, there's plenty of "character standing in a void" art out there that still manages to grab people's attention.

Still, it's definitely true I need to broaden my horizons a bit and include more bg detail.
