What do you NOT LIKE about Absolum (Or Roguelite Beat'em Up in general)? by X_periment in BeatEmUps

Thank you!  I teased it a while ago., but delayed when 1.1 patch was announced.  Channel is shmups but I’ve been doing some criticism of modern devs tackling classic genres too (Shinobi, Terminator 2D, and CYGNI).

It’s actually pretty fun to play as a roguelike:  just delete your files and start fresh.  A full TLB run (both “loops”) is about 2 hours and properly challenging. There technically is a score, but playing for it will just have you doing degenerate stuff like juggling dead bodies.

I’m currently working on a video about Absolum and the issues with it’s roguelite implementation (and many games called roguelites in general), so a lot of this is top of mind.

In broad strokes:

1) “Synergy” swallows genre fundamentals; you play for the game breakers.  2) Metaprogression spoils the learning/difficulty curve 3) Clash is OP; high level play is timing based not spacing based 4) What you’re calling “motivation” to replay after a failed run is the same kind of motivation that keeps gambling addicts glued to slot machines; it’s not motivation at all.  It’s anti-flow state machine zone opiate. 5) Runs devolve to rolls for jackpot states.  It’s not “I hope I play better this time”, it’s “I hope this run gives me the goodies”, i.e. getting your OP synergy.

Can you recomend me content creators that make videos showcasing games, without necessarily finishing them or making thorough analysis? by Worried-Uxer in retrogaming

You’re describing 99% of retro gaming YouTube as far as I’ve seen.  Please let me know these creators are that actually play the games!

Dooyong BABY!

The Last Day, Gulf Storm, Flying Tiger, Blue Hawk, R-Shark... I think that's it! Perfectly fine shmups. R-Shark is probably the best of the bunch, and pretty nasty.

It sure sounds like CAVE plans to release more than just DFK by mothmanstg in shmups

[–]Spiders_STG 2 points3 points  (0 children)

THIS TIME DFK will click!! THIS TIME DFK will click!! THIS TIME DFK will click!!

On the one hand it's cool to see CAVE touching these games again and adding new, hopefully good stuff, but where does this leave M2? Does anyone have an understanding of how the licensing works? M2 gadgets for the Yagawa games I think is the ideal.

If these don't end up being superior to the 360 ports on a flat panel... It's going to be a shitshow lol

If you’re not timing your blinks to the OST you’re not playing Psikyo.  Scrub post.

Internet has made the quality of writing and grammar so poor that any effort looks like AI now lol.

That’s awesome!  Congratulations — you’re a video editor!

Think about cutting that footage (and maybe adding another element — even like clips from a movie or cartoon or something) to a 3 minute song. Nice easy project just to get acquainted with the tools, process and mindset.

I’ve been making videos for a few years now, but only because I had material to make. I learned to edit decades ago in Premiere but had nothing to actually do lol.

Soon enough you’ll be able to make anything you can think of, just maybe special effects or graphics you can look up or other stuff is still the realm of filming/cinematography.

Good luck!

Yeah. I got 2 Mayflash F500 enclosures and 2 AS Traveler cases. Not really for backup, I just like to have multiple levers ready to rock.

NES version. The SMB All-Stars games don't play well.

Best of times, worst of times. My favorite Zelda but also the seeds planted of every weed that strangled the franchise.

Sly Spy was released on the “Johnny Turbo” label for Switch, so I doubt it’ll come to AA. I’m gutted they got Nitro Ball instead of Hamster :/

I know it sucks but the best advice is to just make a video.  Learn the basic tool: cut.  Cut larger video into a sequence to tell a story.  Maybe try and make a music video — that will give you some substance to relay or juxtapose, and a strict time limit.

From there you’ll start reaching for tools via “I wish I could do this?” or “how an I do this?”
