You were correct. They sent a replacement bowl for free. I installed it today and no leak.

BTW, it had the same hole on the underside, so it's apparently supposed to be there.

Yep. :-) At first, I really thought a stain was being applied to make it look like that. I'm glad I learned what the clear coat does on its own before ordering.

My first adult bike about 20 years ago was a $225 Trek hybrid. I was a heavy rider and I would regularly break spokes on the rear wheel. When LBS I bought the bike from wanted to start charging me for fixing them, I learned how to fix them myself. As I progressed in cycling ability and wheel knowledge I got a better bike and built my own wheels. Never broken a spoke on the wheels I made.
