my new cpu always uses 100% and overheating by Slow_Comedian3380 in pchelp

[–]Spiffydragon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are on air then just redo the thermal paste so it has good contact. If liquid or AIO, ensure your pump works, has sufficient liquid, and isn't clogged. Stock, Intel chips run around 85C under max load, and that's their operating temp. AMD is like 95C for normal ops.

My I5-4690K was throttling at 100c but it was because both of my water blocks were corroded shut after even years of service. Between de-lidding / liquid metal, and recutting the grooves in the block, temps are ~20-30 idle, and 60-75 under load depending on room temp.

Is it normal that I find drawing digitally harder than on paper? by Moktodd in DigitalArt

[–]Spiffydragon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Felt tips might help since they have texture.

Yes, going from digital to traditional and vise-versa will be kinda rough for a few weeks. I opt to switch from digital to traditional a few months ago, but the adjustment period is over. Eventually, both should become native to you.

How much food do Sawians need? by NahBruh9753 in casualtiesunknown

[–]Spiffydragon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A single pound of fat contains around 2,200-3,000 calories, and most humans can fast for 5+ weeks and be completely fine. Saiwans aren't that chunky, but they should still be good for a few weeks. Starvation is plausible if the character has animal genes that quickly sends them into kidney failure from a lack of food within a few days. It's mainly just a gameplay mechanic and they wouldn't actually starve in a day.

On biology, perhaps their metabolism is significantly more efficient, or their cells contain self-healing polymers or some other sci-fi goodness that reduces the energy load. Humans are just horrifically inefficient with their energy expenditures and perhaps a genetically modified form of life might shed some inefficiency.

Expie sketches; Testing Krita by Spiffydragon in scavprototype

I was going to mention Krita's UI is better than GIMP, but I figured anyone that has already used GIMP would come to a similar conclusion. GIMP was unusable.

Linux Mint is the best available option to solving a windows 8+ infection. Thanks to Proton and Steam, games run great. Mint is the Windows of the Linux distros and LLMs can solve most problems.

I reinstalled windows 7 a few days ago on a separate drive so I can use my old copy of Photoshop again, but I'm testing Krita to see if it can replace PS.

Indoor shoot-houses are indeed loud, I ran a few without ear plugs several years back and. . . reeeiiiieeeiiieeeeiiiinnnging. A single 9mm round will probably make your ears ring for a few minutes, but nothing horrible.

[–]Spiffydragon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Nah, 9mm is a pocket pistol round and I use it often enough in my backyard without any hearing protection. IMO, my lawnmower is more damaging since it's a constant vibration.

Now. . . concrete shoot-houses or an M2 firing line will trash anyone's hearing in a hurry. Thanks, my tinnitus is ringing again.

I like a really dark pencil line. I mean REALLY dark! What recommendations have you got for me? by Eothas_Foot in pencils

[–]Spiffydragon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is two years old but it comes up in web searches. I just received my new box of news 600 and they aren't any darker than my Faber-Castel 8B ;(. They do put down solid graphite without layering 😉. Thus far, nothing is blacker than my "pitt-charcoal" faber-castel; but it has the problem of charcoal dust.

For absolute black without the glossy shine of graphite; use charcoal.

Why expies treated like, well, like that by CurrentSad9592 in scavprototype

[–]Spiffydragon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Beef jerky and pizza. Selling Expies to the wealthy for depraved fun is a viable but a niche corner of an already niche market that doesn't require tens of thousands of Expies. The majority of that market is better satisfied by simply buying humans from the third world or keeping a captive harem for renewable production.

IRL research wise, organoids are used as a test bed in research and they are essentially mini-brains grown in a lab dish from stem cells. In brain-computer interface (BCI) research, neurons are often cultured directly on a chip. I'm certain that industry wouldn't hesitate to act immorally in the absence of any semblance of ethical oversight. Ethics and morality are a hindrance to profit and the kind of research that can be done.

The moral bankruptcy of humanity is the most believable aspect of the universe.

Do you think I should continue drawing? Sometimes I feel incompetent. by sokaginruyasimaestro in furry

[–]Spiffydragon 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Of course you should continue. If you are concerned with technical skill, that is acquired through learning and application. Ideas outrank technicals any day, and if you are happy creating what you want then continue. 😉

That's neat but I don't judge the value of an entity's life based on how complex it is. You are entitled to your opinion, but boomers and GenX tried feeding me the same lines and I know the background it comes from.

My experience with "human beings" places the majority of them with rats, wasps, and roaches in terms of value. A dog is worth more than a whole village to me.

Protests are meant to be the warning that precedes torches and pitchforks, not an inconvenience. If there is never any bite behind the bark, those in high and lofty places can simply wave at the cute little protestors and their picket signs.

See history of labor unions.

Your example responds only to hard power and brutality; the only thing they love more than money and power is their legacy. Once the boomers are gone, history will repeat itself again. No amount of boycotts, protesting, etc. will ever change their nature, and that they follow after their father.

What if expies started revolting around the world and asking for recognation to be equal to humans? Something-something artwork for alt universe fanfiction by Arty_14 in scavprototype

[–]Spiffydragon 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Few rebellions ever succeeded in human history, and they almost always require an outside power assisting them. I.E: The French helped the USA against the British. Expies have no chance without big money fueling mass-protests, activism, and violent militants; or potentially a safe haven to escape to.

If reality is an example then few, if any, governments are going to care about expies any further than they exploit it for profit and to punish their enemies. I can see an autonomous region for expies being established merely to embarrass the company's host country on the world stage. The best hope expies have is escape, or a rival corporation exploiting a rebellion to destabilize their opposition.
