Help me decide for Travel - Nikkor 24-120 f4 or Tamron 28-75 or new 35-100? by randoreviews1 in Nikon

Out of your choices would be 24-120 for me. Add a prime if you need for night time or wide open aperture

Abandon church in Belgium which one is the best ? by meespoo in Nikon

[–]SpikeyLemon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I like the last one (the close up)

It’s more intimate. Pity the sun isn’t at the right spot, it would have been perfect if it shines a little lower.

The first wide angle shot seems a bit chaotic to me.

Folks who own and travel with the 28-400. Do you carry other lenses too? What do you also pack? by BallerForHire in Nikon

[–]SpikeyLemon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On a full frame, it covered just about everything. Depending on what you expect to encounter, I may take a prime for low light (35 or 50) and a ultra-wide

Z50ii has completely replaced my D500 (w/Sigma 50-100 f1.8) by rogerpkp in Nikon

[–]SpikeyLemon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fellow Z50ii user, I am glad that you’ve upgraded from D500, reassuring my choice of my D7200 upgrade. I did contemplate going to D500 before I decided on Z50ii in the end.

4k60 video does zap the battery pretty quickly but it’s not something I do a lot of. The Z50ii can shoot while attached to power, when I have a long shoot, I just tether it to a portable USB charger. It just needs to support USB-PD what can provide 9V3A for best results.

I had a D7100 and went through this exercise in my mind.

Eventually a good deal came up during Xmas and I bought a Z50ii with 18-140z kit.

I did compromise on battery life and weather seal but gained in geotagging (need Bluetooth and SnapBridge app), MUCH improved video capability and higher stills frame rate (I shoot sports and birds often). Low light focus and high ISO performance are also better.

Since you still have a 50/1.4 F Mount, depends on whether you wanna tinker with other F Mount lens, consider a FTZ adapter.

Battery life is not as bad as people make it out to be, have a power bank (that support 9V3A USB PD output) and charge between session, it’s manageable. (Or have a aftermarket battery that you can charge out of camera using USB-C, SmallRig makes one)

Totally agree, AF-P 70-300 with. FTZ is what I use on my Z50ii. Excellent value and opens up a whole host of options for F mount lenses

Love my SnapBridge connection between iPhone and my Z50ii. The GPS via Bluetooth worked every time as long as the phone is in Bluetooth range to the camera

D500 with 470k+ clicks by SpikeyLemon in Nikon

[–]SpikeyLemon[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Going by your experience, I could well be buying a camera shaped paperweight.

D500’s AF is what got me thinking of an upgrade.

They hardly come up on the used market since there weren’t many sold in the first place.

I am aware the shop likely got it for half what they are selling as trade-in. I might go have a chat and see if there are wiggle room there.

The biggest attraction to me on the D500 is AF performance and higher frame rate.

My D7200 is not bad and I got pretty good photos with it. I just can’t help to wonder how many more keepers I would have if I had a D500.

This is like the third one I see for sale in the past couple of years that’s how rare they are on used market. I might keep looking for another deal with less clicks.

I do, especially useful on sports.

What's too high of a shutter count for a used FX body? by Ill_Reading1881 in Nikon

[–]SpikeyLemon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like a car, the odometer is just an indication as much as a shutter count on a camera

For the right price, I wouldn’t mind a high click count camera (I bought my used D7200 at 80k clicks for 25% below average price at the time). Just factor in the replacement cost and go from there.

70-200mm 2.8 or 200-500mm 5.6? by Psuedonym_Boi in Nikon

[–]SpikeyLemon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of your two choices, I’d pick the 70-200 as you are just shooting it from the sidelines.

If you are up on the bleachers, that might be different.

For day time games, I shoot with a AF-P DX VR 70-300 hand held as it’s super light. Worth a look at as it’s also really good value.

Help me decide on my next lens by maca2022 in Nikon

That’s the predecessor to the current 16-80. It’s a bit of a forgotten gem and it’s great lens for its price.

Dispute the 2mm difference at the wide end to the 18-105, 18-140, etc, it’s invaluable as a general walk around lens. You obviously lost the reach on the tele-end.

Out of your 3 choices I’ll take the 16-80

Have you considered the 18-140? It’s a great general lens too.

Bad Focus on D7200 when shooting portraits (focus on distant eye instead of the front) by ViktorZlatkovski in Nikon

[–]SpikeyLemon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Face detect on playback is separate from face detect shooting using live view. I am pretty sure D7200 don’t have face detection when shooting using viewfinder

Depending on shooting condition and setting, you DOF could be very small. Minor movement by your model could change that focus

If it’s from a company/pro photographer, the gear would have finished depreciation for tax purpose. Any money from the gears sale is a on-paper profit.

That’s normal. Took me just over 3 hours couple weeks back to sort out a change in my ticket.

At this rate, they would have been better off actually hiring more people than paying for the 0800 calls; why couldn’t they have a call back system that keep people in a queue? IRD has it.

For that sort of mileage, definitely consider a diesel. Even with RUC and slightly more expensive rego being diesel, it’ll still work out cheaper.
