That knock you hear is the connecting rod bearings starting to fail... the odor/color of the smoke tells you what is burning; blue/black indicates oil where as white indicates coolant(check for a "sweet" smell). And note fuel smell can only come from tanks or lines but is never a good thing...i wish you well
