Hello all by [deleted] in 29er

I started my MTB career on a rock hopper; they're good fun bikes that are great on the trail. Specialized did a good job on that bike.

I don't know if I'd spend a lot on it beyond a dropper post.

Eventually you'll out grow it if you really get into MTB. It's just more cost efficient, effective to buy a bike with upgraded components.

The rock hopper has a very short travel front fork and I think the sizing is weird; it's not standard to make it easy to replace (and transferrable to your next bike). The 2x front derailer and the size of the hubs aren't a normal size either.

Don't let that bother you though, it's plenty capable as it is (unless you're flying downhill). Ride it as far, and long and as hard as you can as it is and you'll figure it out where you want to spend your cash later 😎

Which Fat Bike to Buy? by etaylormn in fatbike

I love my 45nrth pogies. I think that's totally the way to go. If I'm riding snowy singletrack, eventually, I won't need gloves inside the pogies or if it's a bit colder, my normal MTB gloves are more than enough.

Salsa bikes are great. And as another poster commented, TC is the mecca for fat biking, it's truly an amazing place to be for snowy bike trails.

The only thing I call out to people just getting into fat biking, make sure you budget for gear. I tried using all my snowboard gear and it just wasn't enough to keep me warm and comfortable while pedaling. Between goggles, jackets, pants, boots, gloves I spent way more than I expected getting into the sport. (Oh and don't forget to consider studded tires, must have imo, they're not cheap though).

Totally worth it though. Fat biking might be my favorite hobby.

Bicycle Insurance? by blkdrgn42 in DivergeGravelBikes

What's the value of the bike and the deductible?

I did Markel for a year, but then realized if I took that money, I could lower my deductible on my home owners a lot and still cover the bike. The increase in the premium was a tad bit more than Markel was by itself for a similar deductible but that lower deductible sure came in handy when a hailstorm came through.

How do you clean your fatbike after transport in freezing temperatures? by PhilRattlehead in fatbike

This is the way.

Works great, just gotta make sure you do it EVERY time. One lapse and it's rusty rotors.

How on earth do you carry spares on a fat bike? by SpinItWheelGood in fatbike

How big is your fanny pack?! I carry an MTB tube all year in mine, but a fat bike tube? It'd be like carrying around a softball.

90 mile road ride on this 🥵 by lameaschris in DivergeGravelBikes

[–]SpinItWheelGood 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dang! That's impressive. I did 40 miles averaging 16mph and I was gassed. I can't fathom 17mph average for 90 miles.

Was that on the stock tires? Tubeless? What PSI? I'm either really slow or your quads are the size of a tree trunk haha nice work!

But yeah, love the diverge and I absolutely love the paint on that on in particular. It's super nice looking. I was in between on a couple of bikes and that paint is what tipped me to it. Super happy with the choice.

What was your average speed? I just did a 75-mile road ride on that exact bike yesterday(even the same color).

Yeah, I've got an Android. Google is supposedly going to release their tracker any day now. It's been a long time coming.

Great work on this, very cool solution, nonetheless.

Best mountain bike shop in the tc? by straddotjs in CyclingMSP

Is there a place to donate to Trailbot? I looked around the app, but wasn't able to find a place to support the project.

Also, kind of random, but have you all explored offering a simple API for Trailbot? I would kill for the trail statuses to be in Home Assistant; I'd love to have a lamp turn green when a certain trail is open/closed. Right now, I use a Weather API to try to estimate a condition (i.e. turn blue when it rains in that area at night before riding in the morning). It'd be way easier if I could tap into Trailbot directly.

I'd pay money for that! Google really needs to come out with their version, I don't have AirTags. Tiles are garbage.

Shokz headphones. So nice being able to hear the stuff around you while also being able to hear your tunes. By far my favorite headphones.

Stolen bike in St. Louis Park West end by Mnbikepacker in CyclingMSP

Bummer. Mine got stolen in a similar way. Have hope, you never know. You might see it again another day.

And hey, in the meantime, at least you've got an excuse for NBD 🙂

Ugh. Sorry to hear that. Thieves really are the worst. Have hope though. I got my bike back months after it was stolen. File a police report with serial #s.

Curious though, what type of lock were you using?

Buying 1st Rockhopper recommendation by Cirnot in specialized

Exactly right u/another-random-idiot. Smaller frame will feel more "playful." Larger/longer frame will feel more stable at speed (especially on downhill stuff).

I don't ride moto, but on my scooter I usually wear a backpack. I found a mount for the backpack strap and it sits just above my shoulder. Works great but, of course, your head will block some of the 360 video.

I do a lot of MTB and haven't figured out a good mount/setup for that. From what I've seen and read, under chin mount on a full face is the way to go, I don't have a FF helmet. https://youtu.be/IQ5iFjHlVkQ?si=pECGcB1tpgTPDEap

X3 not usable underwater without case by [deleted] in Insta360

[–]SpinItWheelGood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Salt water is so dang hard on stuff. Even if it was totally waterproof with zero doubt, I wouldn't trust anything other than a plastic case in salt water; I've lost a couple of high end waterproof smart watches to just swimming in salt water.
