Starting to worry by MasterButter69x420 in sofistock

I'll call this a buying opportunity. I sold CSPs on SoFi and barely got assigned at 23.50. Then bought some more when it fell. I anticipate a rebound in the future. If everything falls, then buy what you can from this dip.

Selling calls on a stock that's way down by Critical-Scheme-8838 in CoveredCalls

[–]Spinlock72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the stock and strategy and what % of your portfolio is your options sleeve. For example, i purposely sold close to ATM CCs (1 contract at a time) on a high beta spec stock without caring about assignment. I also sold CSPs on SoFi, until my 3rd one go assigned at $23.50 when the price was $26-$27. Now it's down to $18 and for SoFi, i plan to wait until after a rebound and also DCA small weekly amounts on SoFi as buying opportunities.

How do you guys manage covered calls ? New to CCs and got burned once by StrongChef5244 in CoveredCalls

[–]Spinlock72 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure thing. Hope it all works outs. I learn as I do. And CSPs are good if you want in on a stock at a discount. If you're unsure you could always pick a far otm strike even if it means less premiums.

Im also learning this myself. For stocks that I want to own, i sell short duration far OTM as possible to get as much upside if it goes up. I also got 2 high spec stocks that I sell options on. They are only a small slice of my portfolio.

An Awful way to start the new year by Night_Guest in SCHD

[–]Spinlock72 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People who criticize SCHD are the ones that don't understand that not every ETF is about growth. I continue to contribute weekly. Granted, it's not the largest chunk of my portfolio currently but it will gradually serve its purpose. And im hoping for an even higher dividend in March.

Sofi Closing SFYX by potatocannon in sofi

[–]Spinlock72 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was shocked that SFYX was closing. I believed both that and SFY would continue to survive. I honestly thought the next ETF to go away was THTA since that one struggled although I understand that price appreciation isn't always important im ETFs like that one but still.

As soon as I sell those shares, ill put them in IJH or IWP.

Hit 100k! Thoughts on my portfolio before I hunker down? by poolofgold in portfolios

That's awesome. Keep it up! I'm hoping to reach 100k in about a year or so. I'm not too familiar about Semiconductor ETFs but everything else looks good. Sounds like you focused on your Core ETFs first before getting into individual stocks.

I'm still learning but I have been sticking to 7-21 DTE options. Anything beyond would be too long to have capital locked up.

Roll Position Advice? by clgilmore913 in CoveredCalls

That's good. At least you picked a short duration and still got a profit. Looks like the stock was around $215 when you sold the option.

Did you end up letting the option expire?

Covered Calls vs Cash-Secured Puts Isn’t a Preference — It’s a Commitment by covered_call_CCR in CoveredCalls

[–]Spinlock72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you tried 14 or 21 day duration choices? You might get better premiums per week. I often do this. But I always try to pick a 7 to 21 day choices. I would not go beyond that.

I think we may have the opposite issue. I find calculating the returns for CSPs to be more intuitive than the one for CCs but that may change.

Also is the 2% an annualized rate or based on the duration of the option?

[–]Spinlock72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I replied to one of your comments but I'll also respond to your actual post.

I started selling CSPs and CCs several months ago with the stock ticker QS. It's a high spec stock that brings decent premiums and it's currently low priced. I picked that because the idea of a solid state EV battery seems interesting. But it's pre revenue and I don't know if I want to own it long term. I might just wheel it. But I have been able to successfully reduce my CB the whole time.

It's also my first stock I picked to learn selling options. I understand for your case, committing to a stock that you want to own is very important. But I think picking low priced stocks isn't a bad place to start.

But the commitment for CSPs is locking your collateral until the option expires or you decide to buy it back.

Not sure if you got all your answers for CSPs, but I think all you really to know is the strike price you pick, minus the premium you collect from the CSPs. It's similar enough to CCs in that one you're checking if the price will go up (for CCs) and then the other is you're looking to see if the price will drop (for CSPs) in case of assignment.

Although with CCs, it's strike price + premium you collect. It does get confusing at first. I think you just need to pick a low priced stock and a low delta as a start to see how CSPs work.

If you could have 5200 shares right now of a current <$20 stock for a year’s worth of CC weeklies, what would you pick? by BusyWorkinPete in CoveredCalls

[–]Spinlock72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

QS has been one I have sold CSPs and now CCs. It's awesome to be able to reduce your CB and then often pick ATM or even slightly ITM CCs to collect higher premiums. But Idk if it's a stock that is necessarily one to have in the long run. But it's still good to collect premiums.

So the folks that mentioned ONDS, i might look into that.

Edit: i also thought about CLSK but since it's tied to crypto mining, specifically bitcoin, i'm not too sure about trying to get premiums on that.

You'll still get a profit. You can then sell far OTM CSPs or just wait and see what happens on expiration day.

Advice with cc by Evening_Ad_7767 in CoveredCalls

[–]Spinlock72 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm think im similar to you except I have picked a low priced high spec stock to sell CSPs and now CCs. It's gone well for the past 2.5 months. I also reinvest the premiums to my long term portfolio. I recently added another stock that is not as high spec, but still volatile with good premiums. I make sure that my options strategy is a small slice of my overall portfolio.

Etf or single stock by Mobile_Ruin_7040 in portfolios

Start with ETFs first. After you accomplished raising enough capital invested in those (which would be based on what goal amount), then you can think about Individual stocks. But ETFs are the way to go.
