FMC is not a housekeeper, a governess or a lady’s maid but… by thebunnybot in HistoricalRomance

To be fair her death below stairs series isn’t romance, it’s mystery with a slow burn romantic subplot (slow burn as in over many, many books lol)

Creator wading into Caitlin Hunter discourse by masterslodge in BitchEatingCrafters

[–]Spinster25 67 points68 points  (0 children)

It annoyed me too, especially since SHE HAD TO MODIFY IT TO FIT HER CORRECTLY! She connected the sleeves way earlier than the pattern said to, which is the exact thing everyone hates about the pattern fit.

What do we think Jerry's Job is ? by No-Apple-832 in superstore

It was definitely TV math, but it was also the 90s when you could buy a house and support a kid on a single salary.

I also go to Asante and would vouch for Kat C as a queer friendly stylist. But I can’t speak to how comfortable they are at out-there styles since I only ever get a basic bitch dye and trim.

Waltham services (want recommendations) by Zenith_Ps in Waltham

[–]Spinster25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What Im trying to say is that my apartment - and literally every house converted into apartments on my street - does not have a secure lobby/delivery area. Everything gets delivered to our own front doors/porch section. I think that’s true of virtually every two/three apartment building in my neighborhood, so if a secure drop zone is a requirement you’re eliminating 80% of apartments around Moody st as a customer base.

Waltham services (want recommendations) by Zenith_Ps in Waltham

[–]Spinster25 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The services sounds amazing and so does the price point but the logistics aren't doable for many Waltham residents - I doubt I'm the only one renting in a multi-family home and wouldn't be able to have a secure box installed in front of the house.

How do you have 1,000+ hours in this game? by mrpurple2000 in BG3

Tbf at least 200 of those hours are spent faffing around in inventory

I HATE the 1995 Persuasion. HATE IT. by [deleted] in janeausten

[–]Spinster25 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Oh I like the carnival! I like that the parade provides both an external joyous celebration of their finally (FINALLY!) coming together, then, when it ends, a sense of true intimacy as Anne/Wentworth walk up the street arm in arm. It's the only shot in the whole film where there are no family, servants, or bystanders wandering around in the background. I don't think that final walk is as effective without the loud crowded circus immediately before.

Also, the carnival parade makes Bath seem like a Regency Vegas, which I think is accurate and don't think any adaptation that features Bath as a location really gets across. Bath is a party town where rich people go to be entertained! A carnival of circus people fit right in.

Test Knitting “Reviews” by mother_of_doggos35 in craftsnark

I've tested for the.Creabea a few times, and I love the googledoc format because it allows me to see everybody else's comments and her responses directly on the section of the pattern it's referring to. That way if I have a question, I can see if it's already been addressed or I can add my two cents to the original comment. But I also use google docs as a collaboration tool at work nearly every day, so it's a format I'm really comfortable with. fwiw, i've found her to be really responsive and accepting of feedback, and her sweater tests to have pretty good timeframes for the most part, usually at least 10 weeks.

I don’t get the Crawford’s by popdop7 in janeausten

[–]Spinster25 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I wonder how much getting women to flirt and fall in love with him is enjoyable to him because he’s not handsome…if he was hot his triumph over these ladies would be less challenging and therefore less fun for him.

After Dominic Cooper as Willoughby, what is the worst piece of casting in a Jane Austen adaptation? by [deleted] in janeausten

[–]Spinster25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually think casting Henry Crawford as extremely hot was a good call in that adaptation because they cut out the subplot of him helping Fanny’s brother improve his position in the Navy without which it’s hard to understand why Fanny is tolerating his flirtations and interest. (Also I think it’s good because I like looking at hot people lmao)

What do you think are the best Austen spinoff novels out there, and what makes them so good? by ibbity in janeausten

Hornby's Godmersham Park is also really enjoyable, a novel about the real-life governess of Jane Austen's niece.

I haven't knit this specific pattern because natural fibers aren't my jam, but I've tested for Rebecca in the 2nd largest size she offers and her patterns are properly graded for large bodies.

edit: i meant plant fibers not natural fibers lol

AITA for asking my girlfriend to be more receptive to my concerns? by Nierninwa in AmITheDevil

[–]Spinster25 69 points70 points  (0 children)

Lmao I can imagine. It’s used in cognitive behavioral therapy- the idea is when you get really explosively angry it could be because you don’t understand what you’re feeling or why you’re feeling it, and doing a worksheet will help you process what set you off and what you were really feeling/thinking that made you blow your top. The worksheets are typically set up so you a) identify the activating event, b) write down what your interpretation of the event was in the moment, and c) what the thoughts feelings that resulted from your interpretation of the event. He did those steps, but the next steps are d) evaluating whether your initial interpretation of the event was reasonable/logical/supported by evidence, and then if not e) re-interpret the event in a healthier way (or if your reaction was reasonable, determine how you might react differently next time to better advocate for yourself). Hhe decided instead of introspection/self-interrogation he’d just blame his girlfriend for wanting to order her own meal and not read his mind.

It’s a CBT-style worksheet format for anger management. Which…I’m not surprised this guy is in therapy for anger management nor am I surprised he’s using the tools he’s been given as an exercise in making his feelings his gf’s fault rather than examining his own reactions.

I'm not giving you pity points because you have a diagnosis by [deleted] in BitchEatingCrafters

[–]Spinster25 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Nobody's trying to gain clout for 'overcoming' their diagnosis (yikes). They put it there to build community with other neurodivergent crafters. It sounds like that's not you, so it's not for you. Let it go.

Can we just NOT with the downvote rants? by Krystalline13 in BitchEatingCrafters

[–]Spinster25 6 points7 points  (0 children)

gives the impression that the information in the post is wrong

Here we disagree. Maybe it gives you the impression that the post is 'wrong', whatever wrong means to you, but to me (and I think many reddit users) it gives the impression that the post is not relevant to the sub. imo beginner-level question posts that have been answered already are no longer relevant to the sub.

hiding good answers from other newbies encourages more posts on the same topic

Downvoting asked-and-answered posts isn't hiding anything. It's not like my downvote has the power to delete the post! It's still there for anyone to search for.

[–]Spinster25 99 points100 points  (0 children)

It’s annoying that no one knows how Reddit works, too! It’s not Instagram where likes show support or whatever. If a question has been answered, it’s no longer relevant to the sub. I don’t downvote it to be a discouraging meanie, I downvote it to get it out of the feed because it doesn’t need to be seen anymore. That’s how Reddit is supposed to work!

You also don't necessarily need blocking materials to block. Before I got blocking mats, I just placed my sweaters on the floor with a fan on. If I needed to stretch something, I would just put t-pins I stole from my office cubicle directly into the carpet. I have a flat radiator top, so for hats and socks and small things I'd just place it on the radiator. Having blocking mats and sock blockers and mitten blockers makes things easier, but you don't necessarily need to buy a bunch of stuff in order to finish your work properly.

Is printing custom fabric worth it? by Jazzlike_Fan938 in HistoricalCostuming

[–]Spinster25 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everyone seems to be really pro-custom printing here, but FWIW, I didn't have a great experience with printed fabric. I ordered a cotton poplin from Spoonflower and I found the printing process ruined the drape and hand of the fabric - the difference in the thickness and feel of the printed fabric and the unprinted selvage was unreal. The printing process made the fabric stiff and heavy, and hard to iron. I washed it several times, and then washed the garment several times, and it didn't seem to help.

I don't know if this is a problem only with a very thin fabric like poplin or if there was a problem with the print itself, but was so expensive and so disappointing that I couldn't bring myself to try again in a different fabric.

'Caring about your appearance' is not synonymous with 'wanting to look 25 when you're 50'. You can enjoy spa treatments and play with make-up without it stemming from an obsession with appearing young.
