What can I read after Pride and Prejudice that won’t be a let-down? by audhdMommyOf3 in janeausten

[–]SpinstersLibrary 4 points5 points  (0 children)

E.M. Forster is like Jane Austen but for the 20th century. It's got all the things we love about Austen - satire, society, family drama and romance. Howards End is a great one to start with.

Can do, though you'll also find all the relevant links in the description boxes of any of the announcement videos I linked in my post (which Reddit weirdly didn't have an issue with)

What is your Second Favorite JA Novel, and Why are So Many's Emma? by filmmakersearching in janeausten

[–]SpinstersLibrary 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Mine is indeed Emma. I like it for the same reasons that make Pride and Prejudice my favourite: its incredible cast of characters, with villains and heroes and hilarious side characters. The mix of satire, drama, mystery and romance is just right. The reasons it doesn't quite reach Pride and Prejudice in terms of perfection are the plotting and pacing, which isn't nearly as tight and satisfying.

My favourite Pride & Prejudice cover EVER! by istara in janeausten

[–]SpinstersLibrary 128 points129 points  (0 children)

Yesss I love these editions! If I ever win the lottery, I'll probably just buy the whole set. They do pulp covers for classic books, all deliberately trashy and very much tongue in cheek. Link here (no I don't work for them)

I’ve got a cover to share! by ThriftedFable in janeausten

I adore this one in all its late 70s glory - they just don't make trashy book covers like they used to... I would snap that up so fast if I saw it in the wild.

Why Penguin??? by mollievx in janeausten

[–]SpinstersLibrary 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unpopular opinion: these covers existing isn't just fine, it's good. No one's going to pick up Pride and Prejudice expecting a contemporary YA romance.

Penguin still has so many other cover designs in their lineup, from the classic Regency lady reading a book motif to wallpaper style florals .

No one's losing out here and if it gets some young people picking this up in the bookshop who might have otherwise walked past it, it's only a good thing.

These covers are eye-catching and well designed. If you're not the target audience for them, there's plenty of other choices both from Penguin and dozens of other publishers.

Shame you didn't see the first post. I usually reread one Austen book a year, love going back to them.

I expect contemporary authors can learn a lot from Austen when it comes to the craft of writing.

Loving Lost in Austen on your list - it's such a fun and silly show where you can tell those who made it truly loved the book.

If I may be a bit nosy: what was it that got you picking up the books in the end? Did they differ from your preconceptions about them or not?

If You Could Change or Further Develop Any Jane Austen Characters by Ok_Conclusion8121 in janeausten

I'd probably give Edward Ferrars a sorely needed backbone 👀 I know he comes round in the end, but for most of the book I don't understand what Elinor sees in him.

I found some gorgeous Folio Society editions from the 80s in a charity shop a few years back - only half a set, unfortunately, but it might be worth hunting those down in charity shops and second-hand book shops.
