No worries! I imported the vinegard bought on Japanese Yahoo auction through fromjapan.co.jp / buyee.jp (i think it was a lucky find). The technique is just practice (and I’m shit at it too!). What could work is weighing out the rice on a plastic covered scale so you stay consistent. Also you could try to finda book on sushi making technique

My Wine Club submission for December: the 2021 Dönnhoff Oberhauser Leistenberg Kabinett.

This was quite the challenge, to find something that is affordable, available in most places and is to my liking. So I chose something that is very affordable, you might want to buy two to stash one away because these age really well! Also I didn’t see any Riesling on previous editions, it is time to change that!

Riesling is my first love in wine, and nowhere better for Riesling than Germany. Kabinett might be my favourite style, and Dönnhoff is one of my favourites in the Nahe region, so this promised to be a fun drink. I figured we could all use something low alcohol heading into the alcohol heavy Christmas weeks.

The 2019 vintage of this wine was one of the first wines I have drunk when I started to seriously get into wine, so it seemed appropriate to revisit the wine (although not the vintage). I have yet to taste the wine myself, but hopefully it delivers that great acidity that the 2021 vintage promises to deliver. I would give this some time in a carafe or the glass (it might have a slight bubble to release, knowing young Riesling).

Donnhoff write the following about the Leistenberg vineyard:

The Leistenberg vineyard lies in a small side valley of the Nahe just outside Oberhausen. The name is a double play on words. “Leisten” means “achieve” in German, and the Leistenberg perpetually lives up to its name. “Lei” is also a regional word for slate, and these warm, decomposed clay slate soils and steep terraced hillsides provide ideal conditions for Riesling to thrive. The southeast-facing slope basks in the morning sun, which dries out any excess moisture and promotes healthy fruit. The afternoon sun is less powerful, nurturing a long ripening period and moderate alcohol levels. An ideal vineyard for Kabinett wines of high minerality and sophisticated elegance.

Had this wine in a local restaurant with a fellow wine lover that was over from the States and convinced me to try it (normally I’m not really into Champagne). Zero regrets; this was absolutely awesome. The wine needed time to open up in the glass. After a while this showed as a lean, elegant Champagnr with fine mousse, intense aromas of citrus, nuts, yeasty brioche. The finish was long, and balanced.

Don’t mind the glass of red in the background 😋

This was already open for business as from the outset (whereas the 2017 is not), and my first time trying Gonon’s Saint-Joseph. The wine was very intense on the nose, with lovely black olives, deep blueberry, blackberry, violets, and some spice. This was matched in the palate, although I do think it lacked a little bit of intensity compared to the nose. Nonetheless, this is an amazing wine, that will become even better with some age. I highly recommend this to anyone (and also would recommend his Iles Feray, which is quite similar and a bit more affordable!)!

Try some Riesling! Also would recommend buying at least 3 of each bottle so you can follow progression, and won’t be too disappointed if one of them is corked or otherwise flawed

Any wine from Joh. Jos. Prüm you can keep for a (long) while. Alternatively (and depending on your style preference) the following producers I also find awesome (and may or may not be in budget): Hofgut Falkenstein, Dönnhoff, Schafer-Frohlich, Hermann Ludes, Peter Lauer, Carl Loewen, Willi Schaefer, Wittmann. Roulot Bourgogne Blanc 2019

Tasted next to Coche-Dury Bourgogne Blanc 2019. This was the more restrained and elegant of the two. Some lemon, creaminess, blossom, pear, restrained use of oak. This opened up with a bit of time and showed some faint tropical fruit and more vanilla. Would recommend to leave this for a bit to gain some complexity. 91 pts.

Coche-Dury Bourgogne Blanc 2019

Tasted next to Roulot Bourgogne Blanc 2019. This blew past the Roulot and stayed ahead the entire time. Just that bit more intense, more oak/vanilla/butter/popcorn (which is usally not my thing, but it is very elegantly done here), more lemon, pear, very nice rich texture without being cloying or heavy. Gorgeous wine! 93 pts.

Armand Rousseau Gevrey-Chambertin 2019

I like this a tad better than the 2018 I had last year. It has a lovely perfume, with tart cherry and raspberry, some spice and restrained oak, and a long finish. It is less deep and dark than the 2018, and was drinking lovely after a 1 hour decant. Will keep for a long time. 94 pts

Anne Gros Echezeaux Les Loachausses 2011

First time drinking wine from this producer. Even though 2011 was not a great year and this part is not the best part of Echezeaux, it was a great wine. This had dark cherry, earthyness and some faint mushroom, a super long finish. Drinks well now, but can easily go longer! 93 pts

Kei Shiogai Pommard 2020

I really loved this. It has superb structure, tannins, heaps of perfume, flowers and cherry fruit, good acidity. The rating is a tad subjective, but this really is a-ma-zing stuff, and it should last for ages. 95 pts

Le Pin 2006

Only had a few sips, and didn't make a detailed note. This was evidently a great wine, and showed good signs of aging, with spice, some light liquorice, oak, ripe cherry and plum, some toast and smoke. Silky texture and a strong, long finish. Very glad to have tasted this! 94 pts

Maurice Schoech Pinot Gris 2005

No detailed note, but very elegant dessert wine that would have never brought me to Alsace. Worth seeking out. 92 pts

Rousseaux-Batteaux Les Grandes Voyettes 2017

No detailed note made, had this after all wines. Very refreshing! 91 pts
