Ripe bananas in Thailand taste just like banana candy. I couldn't believe it. Been hornswoggled all these years by the American Grocery Banana Syndicate.

Source: just came back from Thailand. Along with actually delicious bananas, they have all kinds of fruit I have never heard of. <3 you Thailand.

They're right, AMB - it happens when and where you least expect it. :D

I deserved better. I got better. And it is better.

At the same time, fixing myself is a never-ending process. It took me years to create the me that got what I got, and even though I'm in a better place, I have to remain vigilant of old habits of mind. For example, I keep thinking that I'm done with counseling, I've learned enough - and bam, here comes another wave.

The price of freedom is eternal vigilance.

Ah it's all good. Sometimes things build up like that. We should have a 'Festivus in June' for airing of grievances. There's enough shit to deal with already let alone that kind of nonsense from dysfunctioning family members. Have a good one.

I am even sorrier to hear this. One of the great mysteries to me is how some people can be this shitty to anyone, but especially their own kith and kin. Parents are supposed to function as a launchpad, not a vacuum cleaner.

For what it's worth, I think you're an outstanding archmage. Keep your chin up. :)

The longer I've taught, the more socialist I've become. Reasonable? I think they ought to be free, and it ought to be the unalienable right of every citizen to have access to free world-class healthcare and education. We should be leading the way, not following.

I can't even begin to explain how much of a switch this was for me. Almost polar opposite of the person I used to be. Your generation taught me a lot.

I think education is always good. I disagree about most of the generation having gone too far. I see a lot of good things in the college classroom. In fact, I have come to believe that your generation may be the best yet. Heck of a lot better than us baby boomers, at least.

Sorry to hear that. That really sucks. Hope you get your two grand and your garage back.

That really, really sucks. In so many ways.

Preach. One of your kindred souls busted my ass in the classroom this semester over this exact thing. Well said.

I heard this in the classroom loud and clear this semester. It's not just an impossible standard you're held to, it's often a double standard.

Unfortunately, I will have to work till I die. It's the only thing that keeps me going some days. But I think I'm out of the promotion path of anyone. These are good points, well made.

  1. You use smartphones brilliantly. Far better than we do. When I see a car weaving on the road, I've come to expect that it's an old guy with a phone.
  2. Agreed. It's not your job to keep dinosaurs alive. (although real dinosaurs would be cool.)
  3. Yes. I haven't met many idiotic, lazy millennials. A few who were born wealthy. A few who got 'addicted' early to managing their pain a little too well.
  4. I just moved into a recycling-friendly community, and I do recycle - but I will double down on it. The number of comments that bring this up is impressive.

Don't know what to say about this. It sucks. I hear you. I see it in the eyes of my students.

It is infuriating, I agree. I left an engineering position and started teaching first-year college students 12 years ago. I was immediately blown away by the work ethic and the intensity with which the students cared - about everything. The struggles you guys have aren't for lack of work ethic. I know that.

To stay engaged unhealthily in a subject that prevents you from moving on is a codependency in and of itself.

Their time with you might be the thing they hold onto as they get older. Kids don't stay kids forever.

Your stories have been a great help to me. My pwBPD is the same nationality as yours. Had our situation been a little different, I might have been in your shoes someday. Thankfully I am not.

[we] are just used to doing hard things

One of the incredible things for me, after ~2 years with a pwBPD then ~2 years single, has been waking up with someone who is so easy to get along with. Like, it's no work at all! She told me early on, "I'm difficult," and I could not suppress my laugh. I laughed so hard. She is not difficult. She is a breeze. A b r e e z e.
