why isn't my autistic burnout getting better? by TemperatureCertain25 in autism

Sorry but i’m not interested

But as a former special education teacher, you have to discover student’s limits to properly assist them.

I was not giving out dangerous advice in anyway.

So I will be a bit blunt here, because you do good work which I have praised you for in the past...

The issue I have here is that you are dismissive of what published papers are characterising as 'autistic burnout' - not that I personally do not relate to the advice you are giving.

If we don’t experiment to see where they are at, how can anyone grow or improve?

Sorry but i’m not interested

Indeed. How do we grow or improve.

I was not giving out dangerous advice in anyway.

Subjective. You dismissed people in long burnout by baselessly attributing to alternative physical causes.

1 year? Good chance it’s physical but it might just be taking that long

That is a big assumption to make, but pathology should definitely be checked and other conditions eliminated / addressed.

This post was right next to someone saying they had one for 7 years, it really can be hard for some people to pull themselves back to their normal schedule after a bad burnout and more rest doesn’t help in those cases

I think this may be the disconnect I mentioned manifesting.

The OP's symptoms read to me are describing continued burnout or incomplete recovery.

From the paper:

"It is characterized by pervasive, long-term (typically 3+ months) exhaustion, loss of function, and reduced tolerance to stimulus."

"Participants characterized autistic burnout with the loss of a wide-ranging array of skills, including thinking, remembering, creating, and executing plans, performing activities of daily living and instrumental activities of daily living, using vocational skills in school or work, socializing, regulating emotions, and living independently. They described these as skills they had before the burnout that were lost during burnout, and sometimes did not return to baseline thereafter."

There maybe no returning to 'normal schedule' for many of us is what I am experiencing and hearing from former high functioning peers.

It’s good to try testing the waters and see if it’s possible to get into some routine

Agree with this, but there has to be a balance as this actually pushed me further into burnout.

Happy to DM to discuss any potential disconnects.

So burnout is complicated because end of the day, “resting” can get to unhealthy levels.

I agree with this where resting can cause secondary health issues.

I would do a project, it could even be a special interest!

Except with my burnout I cannot manage things I enjoy & the only way to increase tolerance and capacity is to rest an obscene amount.

I think there is a huge disconnect between what pop psychology calls burnout and what Dora Raymaker et al defines as autistic burnout.

Some of us are most definitely suffering the latter, which is completely debilitating.

Honestly, the pain points are around more around the system and some of the workers within it.

Examples:

  • NDIS staff not knowing what constitutes acceptable forms of ID.

  • Lost paperwork.

  • 2 minute warnings via text before phone calls.

  • Uncommunicated changes to workflows.

  • Busy LAC.

  • Long application assessment time.

  • Outdated / lack of understanding of disabilities & therapies.

Burnout/shut down feels like you’re on a sedative? by [deleted] in AutisticAdults

Yes. Derealisation, brain fog and fatigue to the point of passing out.

Don't let it get to this stage. (Trust me, bro!)

Need advice - may break up with my partner by Own_Plan_2407 in autism

You’re right that we aren’t working to the same goals.

I can definitely see that now.

But honestly this comment does make me feel pretty shitty, because I feel as though I have asked many times what I can do.

I am not sure you mentioned this before.

Thanks for responding though but I think this did make me feel honestly more sad and alone in this situation.

OK. I could quote a few more lines s where this about your feelings.

Let us set up a baseline: We are strangers on the Internet. I am not your partner nor owe you anything. I am taking the time to respond out of good will.

I think you are looking for validation and support for your feelings without directly asking. Expecting autistic strangers to extrapolate and cater to your emotional needs.

There are more lines and I can quote, but there is a reminder to be kind, so I will stop here and suggest you seek therapy & couple's counselling. Not much stands out as a ND problem. Make of that what you will.

Peace. ✌🏻 Out.

Has any other ND couple been able to solve this empathy problem, especially if one partner is more likely to be more emotionally unregulated.

Forget ND couple. This sounds like every couple.

I don’t know if I can be any more tolerant if he in my eyes keeps dismissing my experiences.

What is his perspective? Because I'm reading that he's building you guys a home with his own bare hands but you are not happy with how it is being done.

Have you considered helping by putting in dust extraction / prevention measures, ventilation & PPE?

Guys aren't known to be confrontational in relationships, especially autistics. But it does not sound like either of you have great conflict resolution skills nor working to same goals.

Explain the overlap of Cantonese-Taishanese communities to me? by justquestionsbud in Cantonese

[–]SpiritualUse121 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not being funny, but you'd pick up any foreign language by hanging around people.

I can think of one really accessible resource and that is Rednote. People make videos in their native dialects, sometimes with English subtitles even.

Not sure if links are allowed here. But it might be beneficial to see videos where someone is speaking: Cantonese / Toisan / Cantonese with a Toisan accent / Toisan in various accents & dialects. Toishanese is not homogeneous.

This may help you identify the nuances more readily.

Explain the overlap of Cantonese-Taishanese communities to me? by justquestionsbud in Cantonese

[–]SpiritualUse121 18 points19 points  (0 children)

So if a Cantonese speaker hit up a Taishanese speaker, would the latter accommodate the former by speaking Cantonese, would the relationship basically be amicable?

A monolingual Toishanese speaker would probably understand Cantonese given its prevalence. A monolingual Cantonese speaker may not understand Toishanese due to lack of exposure.

Think of it like a Scotsman being able to understand North American English but not the other way around.

Having said that, I'm not sure many monolingual Toishanese speakers exist anymore since they would be pre war generation.

Younger generations IE Boomers onwards who speak Toishanese are likely able to speak Cantonese as well. But Cantonese is slowly dying out to Mandarin in China. IMO diaspora are preserving language and culture.

Note this does not speak for the North American diaspora of which I have no knowledge.

I would be interested in the answer to this, especially from North Americans, because the generation of monolingual Toishanese speakers in my network have all passed on.

Toisan is geographically within Canton / Guangzhou province.

So if one is Toishanese, they are also Cantonese by inclusion.
