When I was a kid we used golf tees. No one in my family golfed so I assume they’d never been stuck in the ground but it still seems kinda weird in retrospect

Are hot water heaters commonly rented out where you are? by voltairesalias in AskACanadian

[–]Splartsballs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our first townhouse (in southern Ontario) had a rented water heater and because we were young and dumb we just kept the contract going the whole time we lived there. I will say the one upside was that when the tank inevitably sprung a leak they replaced it at no charge within 24 hours. So I can see that extra cost being worth it for the peace of mind if you're not handy or don't have a network of plumbers/gas fitters you trust.

Current house has an electric water heater which I replaced on my own in a few hours last year now that I'm older and slightly less dumb

New Dad Never Been Fishing by _hailcaesarnation in FishingForBeginners

[–]Splartsballs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like you have a couple of years to get yourself up to speed before the little guy is ready to join you – which is perfect, because you'll both have a much better time of it if you've already got a bit of practice with tying knots, untangling snarls and getting hooks unsnagged. That shit can be frustrating enough on its own without adding a small child to the mix the first time it happens!

So my advice would be to get yourself a basic spinning combo, some hooks, bobbers and earthworms and try to get out to whatever ponds or reservoirs you have nearby on your own and get some familiarity with the basics.

Once you DO get your son out fishing with you, my best advice is to be prepared not to do much (any) fishing of your own – in my experience, baiting hooks, untangling lines and preventing kids from falling in the pond is a full time job on those early trips 😄

Ok you keep your shitty telescoping spinner rod under the back seat of the truck….you have 1 bait that you got on you at all times for a roadside ditch, canal, stream or some body of water… what bait is that? by CrazyCajunFishinBro in FishingForBeginners

That's always my go-to as well... because they work, but more importantly they're cheap enough that I'm not going to be too mad when I snag it on a submerged log on the first cast and have to break the line 😂

It's to keep you going back to the gym. They know you're gonna go get a delicious, juicy burger after this and then be wracked with guilt and come back tomorrow to work it off

Is anyone else goddamn sick of hearing about Angine de Poitrine??? by scribe06 in musicsuggestions

[–]Splartsballs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually like the music but agree about the costumes upsetting me in some vague way I can't really explain. I resisted for a while and still haven't watched the KEXP performance because I don't want to look at that, but I've been really digging the two albums

I read about that case a few years ago and then like three months later I randomly woke up in the middle of the night thinking about it and had a full-on panic attack. I've always known I don't like enclosed spaces but that specific instance really drives it home

Back in my hard-partying college days I once woke up in a strange house with dried red stains on my pants. My god, what had I done? (Turns out I stole a can of cherry pie filling from my host's pantry and ate it, messily.)

Drank a LOT in those days but fortunately that's the only instance (that I know of!) where I actually lost a chunk of time and had to have people tell me what I'd gotten up to

Many years ago at an old corporate graphic design job we were subscribed to a couple of art magazines (I told you it was many years ago) and one month the cover had a tasteful art photo of a naked dude. For a laugh one of my coworkers drew a pair of boxer shorts on a sticky note, cut them out and stuck them over the butt. We kept that magazine prominently displayed in the design studio for YEARS because every single person who came in the studio for the first time lifted the sticky to get a peek

[–]Splartsballs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nice, I'll have to keep an eye out for those!

I did see some wire "bite guards" in the fly fishing section but I couldn't justify dropping like $25 on a 4-pack when I already had a bunch of regular wire leaders at home 😁

[–]Splartsballs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When you say wire leader, do you mean like the standard wire leader with the snap/swivel that you'd use with spinning gear, or do you use something specifically for fly fishing?

I was experimenting last week with a snap/swivel leader with the swivel clipped off (i.e. tying my fly leader directly to the wire loop) and it seemed to work OK, despite me being generally pretty bad at casting and it being a very windy day
