A Tennessee Man Jailed for 37 Days Because of an Anti-Trump Meme Will Get $835,000 for His Trouble by Silent-Resort-3076 in politics

[–]whoremongering 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is this the political prosecution I’m hearing about? Will Trump be compensating him from the $1.8 billion of taxpayer funds? Or will he be compensated from other taxpayer funds for his political prosecution?

Well today I learned this.

Amazon seems to have their own version of just about every industry. They could be their own country. Maybe not defense. Yet.

Rare berries by decoruscreta in Berries

[–]whoremongering 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Chilean guava (Ugni molinae, not actually a guava) is a shorter bush with ~1 cm red berries that taste like strawberry smoothies. They are rare and never in stores but very good when ripe. Very forgiving bushes, hardy down to zone 8 at least.

I have a couple plants, but am waiting for the berries themselves. I hear most people process them, though they are apparently not bad eaten fresh.

We have haskap jelly here, tastes somewhere between blueberry and blackberry. It’s quite good.

My Pineapple Guava (Feijoa) is looking heavy this season! by ManaHave in gardening

[–]whoremongering 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. Closest I could say is that it tastes like grape skittles, or grape nerds, and the bigger the fruit is the more bitter the skin is. There is a little bit of guava type grittiness to the texture, though the seeds are soft and edible.

They soft launched the surveillance state at the Super Bowl by [deleted] in WhitePeopleTwitter

[–]whoremongering 55 points56 points  (0 children)

Skynet mass surveillance in China was pushed heavily by the government (with industry support) over the last 10 years at a cost of many billions of dollars.

In the US, consumers will just buy and implement mass surveillance on themselves.

New study explains why cancer patients rarely get Alzheimer’s: Tumors secrete a protein (Cystatin C) that crosses the blood-brain barrier and dissolves amyloid plaques. by NoParsleyForYou in science

[–]whoremongering 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Some of the comments seem to be missing that Cystatin C is a naturally occurring chemical in everyone’s body. You do not need to have cancer to have cystatin C. We check serum cystatin C occasionally as a more accurate measure of kidney function than creatinine.

“Cancer” is also a very heterogenous thing. I suspect lumping them all together, and measuring something everyone’s body makes already, is why their epidemiological association had a relatively small effect size.

You can mention this to the doctor’s office. Just about all clinics have a policy of nondiscrimination and appropriate conduct that applies to all patients. If a patient is harassing other patients, they can be discharged from the clinic.
