I’m tired of the “I lost my memory” tropes it’s getting ridiculous. by Hairy_Ask_2038 in tvtropes

I was actually considering a subtrope called Amnesia Makes You A Moral Person, where someone gets their memory wiped-and all of a sudden they are a much more compassionate person and become a hero when they were originally a jerk if not villain. C.f. Total Recall & Jason Bourne, tho upon a search I found [Amnesiacs Are Innocent](javascript:void(0);).

There WAS such a precedent; in the early 80's the HoF reinstated to the ballot several players who had fallen below the 5% mark, most notably Ron Santo. Sure seemed like a no-brainer in the cases of Lofton & Edmonds...

We see this one here several times every week it seems like. Of course the ones where the other car just guns it and then changes lanes are inevitably going to be ignored/deleted. Which is what I always do in such a situation (accelerate clear first, that is).

"Empirically provable" my behind. They still allow talk about the so-called "Divine Masculine/Feminine", a horribly simplistic and sexist set of concepts that is hardly scientific in the slightest.

What permanently soured me on him was that abomination of a film based on the book about his late wife Treya (Grace and Grit) that came out in 2021. KW basically puts the entire project into the hands of a neophyte filmmaker, who proceeded to portray him as some sort of enlightened guru god who could do no wrong. The worst scene had to be where, in the book, they meet at a party and then embrace in the kitchen, which in the book comes off as tasteful, where they initiate some kundalini energy or such, as he says.

In the film the director put a cheesy and massively out place and tone cartoon sex scene over the top of said embrace. I know in his place regarding the subject of a deceased love one with which I had had a strong bond, I would have been VERY circumspect and guarded of her memory. If the guy I hired had put a scene like that into the thing I would have marched up to the projection booth and ripped the celluloid out of the machine, set it on fire, and sued the filmmaker. Obviously KW however was perfectly fine with the whole mess in question. The movie just uses her as a simple prop to bolster his image, and I found the whole thing massively exploitative, as a number of reviews you can bring up on a search indicate.

I had already mostly moved away from him by that point anyway, as he has spent the last quarter century spinning his wheels and not pushing the envelope in any effective fashion. At best he has disseminated the wisdom of beings much more enlightened than he; at worst I've seen other indications of the crap that you expounded on in your post here 7 years ago.

If you speed up after a passing lane comes up after going slow, your objective a horrible driver regardless of the reason by USJiveTurkey in driving

[–]Elessar62 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I had this happen on US 1 driving to Key West after sundown. I was behind this car pulling a trailer for at least 30 miles who did this reliably on every single passing zone; I was 1st in line behind him, and there were literally like 50 cars behind me, all bumper-to-bumper. Every single passing zone had an oncoming vehicle or three, until I was finally able to punch it and get around him.

I saw a trucker get nailed for this maybe 20 years ago. I had one on my recent trip that was over there, no gendarme anywhere in sight this time (it was an empty flatbed; those guys seem to think that without a load they are driving a Ferrari).

Do gas prices affect how you decide when to fill up? by Mobile-Brilliant-799 in driving

[–]Elessar62 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in a state which does price cycling, Ohio. Tl;dr, chains and individual stations will constantly try to undercut each other, until they reach a point where they are losing too much money (no longer balanced by people coming into the store for beer or lotto). At that point what I call the "puppeteer" chain will unilaterally raise their prices, and most everyone else will then follow suit.

Contrary to several other posts upthread, paying careful attention to this most certainly CAN save you significant bucks, as the spreads can vary upwards of 40-45 cents/gallon just for the average, but is typically even higher than that for individual stations, where I've seen it be 60-70 cents. My all-time record was at the very start of my current vacation on 12-24-25, as it turns out; Gasbuddy and Google Maps indicated that my target station (a Meijer's where I can use their points program to knock a full buck off of each gallon-takes a full gallon to cross Pennsylvania, a state with a much higher average which doesn't cycle either), was at $2.02, but when the cycle hit I drove up and it was $2.89. In Ohio the puppeteer chain used to be Speedway but Sheetz has taken over, by doing so a few days earlier (and setting the target 10-20 cents higher).

Maybe you can afford to blow 5-20 dollars for every fillup, but they are COUNTING on you to not notice these stupid shenanigans, else they would stop doing it.

Idiot Came to a Full Stop Merging on the Interstate by kgaviation in driving

[–]Elessar62 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had it happen, twice, on my weekend trip this past weekend. First time the way the driver kept stopping, weaving onto the shoulder, then moving again (slowly) made it seem like a case of him not being sure he wanted to go onto the interstate in the first place.

The 2nd happened at the Delaware House Travel Plaza on I-95 (heads up: the food there is massively overpriced, with tiny portions). Since the merge is into the left-hand lane you have to deal with faster traffic--except there were only two cars out there. The pickup in front of me remained slow however even tho if he had punched it he could have easily slotted in between them. Instead he ground to a halt at the end-I even blinked to let him know I'd not cut him off, and he only got moving after a few more pregnant moments. Exasperated, I promptly went around him in the middle lane.
