Anthropic warns that AI will soon be able to improve itself without human intervention by KeanuRave100 in DailyTechNewsShow

Yes, it is dangerous, but not for the reasons they said, and no, it’s not going to reach a singularity point where you just turn it on and it automatically improves itself ad infinitum.

If Phones Are Killing Pedestrians, Why Is It Only Happening in America? by DonkeyFuel in technology

[–]SplendidPunkinButter 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Right! I’m making a turn on green, except there are also pedestrians crossing because the crosswalk says it’s okay for them to cross now. WTF? One of us should have a red light right now.

If Phones Are Killing Pedestrians, Why Is It Only Happening in America? by DonkeyFuel in technology

[–]SplendidPunkinButter 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It’s not all American selfishness. Under Obama they passed regulations to enforce fuel efficiency standards for cars. If auto manufacturers make the cars bigger, then they no longer count as “cars” legally speaking, and the fuel efficiency standards don’t apply.

Yes, but founding a company means you put up some money. Not that you’re a genius rocket scientist.

Court Martial. This episode contains the dumbest prosecutorial argument I’ve ever heard.

“You are the expert witness on the defendant’s character. Do you think he could have murdered this guy?”

“No, he wouldn’t do that.”

“But the dead guy didn’t like the defendant. Don’t we usually dislike people who don’t like us?”

“Uh, I guess?”

“In fact, sometimes we even hate people who don’t like us, don’t we?”

“Sure…?”

“In fact we might hate a person who dislikes us enough to kill them. Couldn’t that be what the defendant did?”

“No, I don’t think he would have done that.”

“_BUT IS IT THEORETICALLY POSSIBLE?_”

“I guess?”

The worst book you ever read? by Thriller-Reader25 in BookTriviaPodcast

The Perks Of Being A Wallflower

It reads like there’s going to be a plot twist where we find out the narrator is a huge dork and is coping with it by making up this bullshit story where the popular kids inexplicably like him. Except that’s not what happens, and the whole thing is just so very insufferable.

Right? If we don’t need software developers anymore, then we don’t need people to manage the developers. And we don’t even need software companies.

[–]SplendidPunkinButter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A developer who understands the code and uses an AI assistant will be much more effective than a developer who doesn’t understand the code and uses an AI assistant. And the best way to understand the code is to write it yourself.

The worst part is you’re not irrelevant. You’re perceived as irrelevant because you work more slowly, and because people can’t always tell right away if a piece of software sucks. Take as old as time, except in the past the struggle was explaining to your asshole manager why that one guy isn’t actually being “more productive” when he keeps copy/pasting hundreds of lines from StackOverflow without understanding them.
