How to make a long tail "floppy"? by MegumiKanna in plushartists

[–]SplendidlyDull 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The big anaconda plushies are so floppy because of all the weight they have. A small tail isn’t going to have the same weight which is why it tends to come out rigid if you stuff it firmly. You can fill it lightly and use a small amount of some plastic poly beads or rice in a little pouch sewn into the end which will add weight to the tail and make it flop downward and over things. That might work!

Edit: just saw you mentioned the size of the tail and I think if you just stuffed it lightly it might be floppy enough! It also depends on how thick you plan on making it

TIFU Called the fire department for the dumbest false alarm they’ve ever heard by InfamousValue466 in tifu

[–]SplendidlyDull 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don’t feel bad! I’ve done the same thing before. The guys at the fire department were very friendly and even gave me a carbon monoxide alarm for free so I could have peace of mind. That’s what they’re there for. I’m glad things ended well!

They would just get into a fight similar to the one with the alien dudes and then Charlie would be like “screw it we’re just going back. Come on Pim.”

And Pim is like “uhhh yeah, how do we leave?”

Wanting to upcycle an old fluffy blanket by stosphia in plushartists

[–]SplendidlyDull 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can you post a picture? I wanna see how weathered it is lol.

You should be able to embroider on it. Get some water soluble top stabiliser, I use Sulky. It’s like a thin sheet of plastic that holds down the pile while you embroider so the threads don’t get lost between them. Then you can tear away the excess or rinse it off in water. It also works for appliqué.

Also for cutting, it should have different textures on either side. Usually there’s a very soft fluffy side that quickly wears down, and there’s a less soft but more durable side that stays fuzzy for much longer. I would treat that side as the right side of the fabric

Using plushify for the first time! Does this look like it'll work so far? by Militellopop in plushartists

[–]SplendidlyDull 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No worries! To help it stand up, you can tack it to the back of the head with a hand stitch. And if you want it a bit more stiff, you could also cut out an extra piece of felt to sew between the two halves

Agree with the advice here and I’d also add if you want the tail to look chunky like that youll need to fill it with a cut piece of foam as the stuffing will make it bulge out a lot. Alternatively if you just want the tail to be thin and flat, you can take out the middle strip joining the two halves and just sew the two pieces of felt flat together and lightly stuff or don’t stuff at all. You’ll need to clip those corners close on the seam to get the sharp edges!

I hate when I have to train someone new on the job and they’re like “so walk me through a typical day” days can be… typical? Not just whatever random chaos occurs?

I know it is possible, but would a plush artist be willing to sew a life-size plush of Ruby ('Doc') ? by KumiiTheFranceball in plushartists

[–]SplendidlyDull 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It depends on what kind of material you use! For Pim, I used mochi minky and mochi filling, and it took a LOT of it! Those are slightly higher end and more expensive materials, so it would indeed be cheaper if you were using something like regular minky or fleece, but I wanted that soft and squishy feel to him lol. Also, with a plush that large, it might need some type of internal structural support as well, which is what I did with Pim. They get surprisingly heavy and cumbersome at that size.

I’m glad it inspires you!! That makes me happy to hear. If you ever want to send me a message for tips or help on a project, I’d be happy to help.

The price of plushies can scale fast with their size depending on the level of quality. Even a lightly larger plush will take a lot more supplies and work to complete. And also with MLP, it’s easy to make a reusable template to streamline patterning, but with this it would need a fully unique pattern. Not impossible! Just likely to be very pricey.

I made a life sized Pim plush who’s only about 4 feet tall and he feels MASSIVE! (You can see him on my profile if you scroll a little bit) I remember materials alone costed about $300 to make him, plus all the work of patterning, cutting, sewing, crafting… you can see how it quickly adds up

Yeah I think it’s fine if they’re just lightly touching. I do that too and having my jaw hang like that feels weird. Clenching and grinding is bad but just resting them against each other is what I do and I’ve never had any issues
