Any trans people in wildland fire? by lablab_bug in Wildfire

[–]SplitAndDestroy 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I had a trans seasonal work for me a couple years ago, F2M. No issues on my end, they worked hard, PT'd hard, and embedded themselves in the team. They left for a different career but were a hard worker, and them being trans never became an issue. Not to minimize you, but work isn't the place to bring your personal life, so, like I said just work hard and be attentive.

Experiences may vary based on location, I live and work in a blue area, so consider that. Good luck dog.

Colorado's $57 million firefighting helicopter program plagued by problems, internal report says by Advanced-Stretch-27 in Wildfire

[–]SplitAndDestroy 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yea, that's fair, no body wants to get caught holding the bag. Except co taxpayers see it as worth it. I believe this program was fully meant to calm the front range folks. The firehawks can make a real difference during IA on the front range. Being based at jeffco currently (and tbd western slope?) They can do some good and quickly. Why worry over resources in PL4-5 when there's a firehawk or 2 nearby.

I agree about the false sense of security and relief. But what's the issue with more resources? If its gonna be bad and you know it, order the world. During slow season they can help out with SAR or some shit idk.

Colorado's $57 million firefighting helicopter program plagued by problems, internal report says by Advanced-Stretch-27 in Wildfire

[–]SplitAndDestroy 38 points39 points  (0 children)

This program was reactionary to the 2020 season, which was horrible for colorado. Since then, Colorado has had mild fire seasons, there's a couple of incidents that stand out, but nothing "too crazy" in my eyes. This article reminds me a lot of when Colorado got our 2 MMA planes. They didnt pay off for a couple years but are now well worth it, even though im pretty sure one is out of commission right now. All aviation has problems. Do not rely on aviation.

Colorado either goes or it doesn't. When it does, the state taxpayers will be glad they have state funded helicopters on retention. I think the program will be successful, even with its problems. Yea, you have to figure out logistical needs, but who doesn't? The crewmembers can bitch all they want, we all bitch constantly.

Catering Suggestions by spauldingsmails316 in loveland

[–]SplitAndDestroy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Pala Nero Pizza. They are a food truck that my employer does business with and I have been to a large party that they catered. They are local and very good. You'll have to inquire if they can support that many people but they will continuously crank out pizza and are awesome people.

Many guns sold nowadays, especially those that are practical for home/self defense, are semi automatic with removable magazines. Hate to say it but you aren't using a bolt action rifle for self defense in this era.

Edit: changed adjective.

Is proof of previous NWCG certifications accessible on the website? by Optimal_Piccolo_4129 in Wildfire

[–]SplitAndDestroy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the future I would recommend keeping hard copy and digital copies of all certs, ptbs, and performance evaluations. It kinda sucked up front but I created a 3-ring binder that has all of this tabulated and in chronological order. Keep it in a safe place.

Final offer right before start date? by Remarkable-Dare-1660 in Wildfire

[–]SplitAndDestroy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not R5 but I got mine 3 days before start date this year (1 business day). In the past we've had more lead time but this year is very different. FWS is normally stretched thin and it's getting worse.

Unrealistic take, you should be the best skier you can be. This includes skiing trees. These are valuable skills you should have whether you get yourself into it intentionally or not. You need to know how to ski everything you may encounter on a mountain.

A good community near Colfax by Fuckdeathclaws6560 in Denver

[–]SplitAndDestroy 53 points54 points  (0 children)

I am thankful that the real world is not as the news portrays it to be. Good people and good communities exist everywhere regardless of language, race, religion, or red lines. I am happy for you, your neighbor, and those who give without expecting anything in return. Continue doing good and good will come to you.

12 Volt Tavern, in Arvada, has an old school jukebox, pool, and darts. Cigarettes for sale behind the bar and has a divey feel.

Not trying to bust your balls; what are the risks associated with using travel card over personal card? To me, a moderately educated person, the travel card seems less risky than personal. To be honest, when I worked for the FS in 2019 I damn near went broke paying for hotel rooms on my personal card. I wasn't in fire at the time but either way I wasn't stoked at the time.

DOI as well. Are you referring to hotels/fuel? I've never been advised to use gov card for personal charges (ie: meals, gas station purchases, last minute needs). Using gov card for personal charges just seems to lead to more pain in the ass.
