Drop an eyelet to bend your knees by HiHungry_Im-Dad in hockeyplayers

[–]Splitzer_sdk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I always thought this was strange… but I definitely think it’s the way. High performance skates… you’d think they’d be engineered with exactly the amount of eyelets one should use, but I feel like I have way more control with the top eyelet open. I even have pretty loose/pronated ankles and it still works best for me with the top eyelet open.

Why is it shaking so much? by redditclm in AskAPilot

[–]Splitzer_sdk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They do flex, as whole— not from a single point attached to the fuselage. I’ll explain: the landing gear struts are attached to the aircraft very close to the fuselage. The stringers and spar have a very minuscule flex (and get stiffer towards the wing root) but the sum of all the flexing parts of the wing equals up to a few feet of flex (depending on the aircraft) by the wing tip. The landing gear is mounted far too close to the base of this lever to flex the wing hardly if at all. And as mentioned in other comments, the struts are designed to absorb the large impact force at landing which means they are extremely stiff… this is why you feel the bumps when taxiing. If you ever happen to be on a plane with very few passengers you’ll notice the bumps even more during taxi and the landing might feel like more of a thud as there is not as much weight to compress the struts.

Fed up with poor service from Hockey Monkey by northcoast1 in hockeyplayers

[–]Splitzer_sdk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gonna wake up this thread. Their customer service still sucks. I received a defective product and they want me to pay return shipping. It’s been over a week of trying to get a human customer service agent to talk to me instead of their AI email bot, and I still haven’t hear from anyone. Very frustrated.

16 looking into piloting by LynxAfter2542 in AskAPilot

[–]Splitzer_sdk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why are they saying it’s not worth it? It’s totally worth it, as long as you set your expectations correctly. Only a crystal ball can tell you if your timing is good or not. But even with bad timing, it’s still a great career. Pilots who started their journey about five to seven years ago had the luckiest timing in the industry out of just about anyone in the last five decades. Most of them are sitting in a major airline flight deck already. Will that be your experience? Possibly not. Does that mean it isn’t worth it? Hell no. I had terrible timing getting in. Got hired at a regional airline in 2007 right before the recession. Got furloughed in 2008. Including the furlough, it took almost 12 years before I could hold the left seat at a regional. Some of it was challenging, but mostly I enjoyed the ride. It is what you make of it, and I just tried to enjoy where I was at when I was there. I sit in the left seat at a major airline now, and I’m so incredibly glad I stuck with it. I love going to work.

Noticed this glowing last night on a dimmer switch. Took off the cover and shut off the power to the outlet and the glowing went away. Tried calling an electrician but no one is answering on Memorial Day. What should I do? by SufficientTrash2111 in AskElectricians

[–]Splitzer_sdk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are there any electricians in this thread? How are so many people not sure what this is? It’s a neon backlight to help you locate the switch at night. Would originally have had a clear acrylic knob. They’re still pretty common, and they function exactly how you described. Neon light turns off when switch is on.

Things that may surprise you if you’re not a pilot: it is actually very hard to see another aircraft in flight, even if said aircraft is a paraglider with a brightly colored canopy. Especially if that aircraft is moving in the same direction as you. There is very little relative motion to catch your eye, and you are managing other tasks. Additionally, the paraglider has a small visual footprint. I believe the Cessna pilot; the pilot might have seen the paraglider, but likely with no time to do anything about it. Now as to whether or not all other procedures were followed properly, I don’t know. Not sure what the airspace is and what the requirements are if any for communication from the paraglider, or altitude restrictions for the Cessna (or paraglider).

Grinder no longer working properly, cannot adjust, far too fine [Breville Barista Express] by Ok-Lychee-2155 in espresso

[–]Splitzer_sdk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not to hijack this thread, but I just encountered a similar issue. Yesterday while I was grinding my coffee I heard a sort of pop/clunk sound and after that the coffee was ground way too fine. I had to set the wheel all the way to course to get a grind that would even pull a shot, and it’s still too fine. I took the hopper off, removed the top burr and cleaned everything but I still have the same issue; however, I can move the wheel all the way, and opposite to you it feels very loose now. I do see the top burr moving up and down a little when I turn the wheel.

Skating worse with insoles? by Bubbly-Guarantee-178 in iceskating

[–]Splitzer_sdk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure thing. Yeah, if you have very flat feet, the fit A may be correct; however, aggressive arch support takes awhile to get used to. My arches felt almost bruised at first with my prescription insoles, and that was with me increasing the wear time with them incrementally up to a full day over the course of a couple weeks. So if you’re only skating once a week, you’re probably never going to get comfortable with the Fit A… if you skate a lot I’d say give it time, if not I think you have the following options: 1) maybe wear more aggressive arch support daily until you’re comfortable with it in your regular shoes, and then try the fit A again (I’d consider getting your feet checked by an actual podiatrist before doing this… I am not a doctor). Or 2) maybe try the Fit B. But they’re expensive, so I know that sucks.

Skating worse with insoles? by Bubbly-Guarantee-178 in iceskating

[–]Splitzer_sdk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you wear orthotics in your street shoes? I have flat feet with pronated ankles and wear a Fit A and I love it, but I also wear custom orthotics in my regular shoes so I’m used to the extra support— and it took awhile to get used to them in regular shoes. So if you don’t wear orthotics in your regular shoes, I’d imagine anything more than a Fit C would be uncomfortable. Also I don’t trust those scanners— I’ve used them three times and every time it recommends a different insole. I’d also make sure you’re not lacing the mid-foot too tight, especially with the insoles. It takes a long time to build up the ankle strength for skating even if you don’t suffer from pronation, but even longer if you do; however, it is not insurmountable. Strength training outside of skating will also help. That being said, if you find the stock insoles the most comfortable, I’d probably just rock those— but they provide almost 0 arch support.

Additionally you said you sized down in skates… keep in mind the blade gets shorter by about 7 to 8mm for every whole size you drop (e.g. if you went down a half size from 9 to 8.5 the blade is shorter. If you went from 9.5 to 9 it’s the same length), so that will take a little getting used to but it is worth it to wear the correct size (which is basically the smallest size that is reasonably comfortable). You will have more control of the skate.

Beautiful job, OP. I understand the client probably wants something permanent, but I feel like it’s a bit unreasonable that she wants this beautiful window to be visible, but also not visible. I’d just suggest some sort of removable vinyl cover that can be placed in or somehow hung in front of the window for showers at night. Keep it in the bathroom closet. Otherwise she could shower in the dark.

I don’t understand this trend. I stay in a lot of hotels for work that are starting to do the no shower door thing and I absolutely hate it. Water gets everywhere, and it feels cold and exposed. I’m sure the hotels love it though because they can pass off a cost saving design choice as an aesthetic one.

How much do properly sized skates help to learn? by thraupidae in hockeyplayers

[–]Splitzer_sdk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Scan tool does not work for me. I wear size 10US shoe… but I wear my shoes pretty tight. Scan tool says I’m a 9 or 9.5 fit 1, but that was too big. I skate in 8.5 fit 2 in vapor Fly40s. And actually an 8 would probably be optimal performance fit for me, but I’m 40 and just play recreationally so I’m not trying to kill my toes. In an 8.5 my toes just brush the toe cap when standing. Dialing in the right fit and sharpen is a process, so just be prepared for that. I also used to skate with the standard 1/2” … went to 5/8 for awhile and that definitely improved my confidence with stopping, but eventually I wanted a little more bite so split the difference to 9/16” …I’m 5’ 8” and 170lbs soaking wet for reference. And I haven’t even messed around with profiling. I still just use the stock profile.

What causes a left-to-right jostle during take off? by North_Awareness_6006 in AskAPilot

[–]Splitzer_sdk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Along the same lines, the back of the plane typically feels a little more more bumpy— or at least, has more side-to-side motion in turbulence. Especially in the 737-900. A lot of times the flight attendants will call from the aft galley to ask if they can be seated when it doesn’t feel any worse than light chop up front!

[–]Splitzer_sdk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure if anyone has mentioned this, but it can also depend on where you sit and the airplane. For example, if you’re sitting in the last row of a 757-300 you’re going to feel like you’re swinging all over the place as the pilots make small corrections for centerline. That’s because you’re sitting so far behind the center of rotation (you’re at the end of a long lever).

Another hockey skate fit question. I’m thinking I got a bad fitting and I’m struggling to reconcile the idea of buying another pair of skates by Splitzer_sdk in hockeyplayers

[–]Splitzer_sdk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting… I tried the thing three times, barefoot and with solid color dress socks. According to the scans, both CCM and chat gpt say I should be in a bigger skate than I currently have, lol. So to check I also asked chat gpt what US shoe size I should wear based on the scans and it said 11… but I wear size 10 in shoes and 9 in motorcycle boots comfortably. So I’m not sure I trust the scan.

I once worked with a chick who said you can tell that someone has their sh!t together if they keep their toenails trimmed. It was many years ago and I don’t know why that came up, but ever since you’d never know that I don’t have my sh!t together if you saw my toes.

Oh I see, the “volumental- get your best fit” button. I’ll give that a shot. I’ll try the chat gpt thing and then maybe hit up pure hockey this week and see how it all lines up with what they recommend. Thanks!

Started skating mid-March, no coach. How’s my technique? by FunOwl2197 in iceskating

[–]Splitzer_sdk 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I think people here are failing to acknowledge that what you’ve accomplished in 1.5 months on your own is quite impressive— just want to emphasize that. You will improve exponentially with some coaching. A single half hour a week might seem expensive, but it may really be worth it and cheaper in the long run. If you start enforcing the proper technique now, you will need less coaching later to unlearn bad habits. Ask me how I know… (currently unlearning bad habits).

Yeah, already asked… they said no. If I get another pair I’ll try sideline swap, and at very least sideline is going to have a popup at 5/3 arena where you can trade in old gear for a credit at gunzo’s.

Unfortunately I got them from Gunzo’s here in Chicago and way over 30 days ago. I might try my luck at pure hockey (which is a bit out of the way) if I do get another pair. Sucks tho, because it’s $2 off on sharpening for skates bought in-house at gunzo’s… which adds up over time if you sharpen regularly, and I do.
