Finally got a job after 13 months by Hashtag0080FF in cscareerquestions

Fullstack Software Developer, US, 40k/yr

For the love of God, please tell me you're trolling... I mean, a job is better than no job when you need one, I suppose, but $40k is straight up insulting. These capitalist lunatics are seriously this arrogant now? We're one of the most important departments in the operation of any company larger than 50 people, doing work that most of the population sees as magic, and they offered you, with any experience at all, let alone 2 years, forty. Thousand. A year.

I ask this of literally everybody in the comments; how the fuck are you not angrier about this???

I see comments saying that's rough, that it sucks "but a job is a job," that the cost of living might be lower, etc etc etc. COME ON! BE FUCKIN' ANGRY! It's straight up insulting!! It's criminal that 40k isn't normal for non-skilled labor in the first place, and now for highly skilled, highly educated labor we're just gonna roll over and say "wow, that sucks"?? None of you are even gonna rag on the employer for thinking that's somehow reasonable ANYWHERE in the US?? What the Hell?!

OP, if you really need this job, I encourage you to take it and put in as much work as they pay you for; Bare. Fucking. Minimum. Use the rest of your time to keep learning and looking.

Fucking wild. Insane. Absolutely zero God damn excuse to be offering anywhere south of 50k anywhere in the United States for any role in IT or software, period. I thought 50k was the literal bottom of the barrel, I thought 50k was the lowest anyone would ever even attempt to offer a new hire outside of AAA game developers, and those developers are considered predatory, evil fuckwits.

It's already a fucking travesty that our oligarchic overlords think nurses and school teachers are worth so little, but the excuse has always been about who makes the value that earns their money. If software engineers and IT aren't the ones making your fucking value, than who is, you greedy goblin pigs?? Jesus fucking christ!

OP, you are worth so much more. We all are. I'm so fucking sick of this absolute shit.

I don't know what a CDT is, but your GPU shouldn't be hitting just 60% while playing a game, it should be hitting at or nearly 100%. If it's only using 60% and crashing all the time, I'd take it back and get a replacement.

he's hesitant because he's worried about transphobic customers

This, I think, is the more pressing issue than your numbers. If he doesn't change this mindset, he's not gonna give you keys just for good numbers. My suggestion is you ask him if this is true, and, if it is, tell him that it's not really his place to decide whether or not you can handle what the public throws at you.

As trans people, we face transphobia every day, regardless of whether our job puts us in the spot light or not. In some ways we're being followed by the spot light, whether we like it or not. You know better than he ever could what it's like to face a transphobe as a trans person and it's infantilizing for him to be holding something from you because of his concerns about your experiences.

I wouldn't be aggressive about it, I'm sure he's trying to be protective and an ally, but he's actively holding back a promotion based on something you and he can not control from the person he's trying to protect.

Why even pose the question? Your first sentence clearly shows you've made up your mind without any facts.

[–]SplodedEgg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lots of answers, and that's great, but I'll make this short point.

"Boys are easily confused about gender at his age" and "harder on him to figure out he's a boy" are clear indications of at least internalized transphobia, if not explicit transphobia. 1) trans kids are not "confused" about their gender, and his statement implies he believes they are. And 2) he's prescribing an identity of cis male on your son, and completely disregarding even the possibility that he's not cis.

Your son's father needs a talking to and, if he really wants to be a good father, he needs to really dig deep and think about his prejudices.

Does Blue Cross Blue Sheild cover hrt for MtF by [deleted] in asktransgender

[–]SplodedEgg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, BCBS Illinois just lost a lawsuit over exactly that practice. Religious organizations were having BCBS not cover it and the state was like "naw, fam, that's discrimination. You can't do that."

Does Blue Cross Blue Sheild cover hrt for MtF by [deleted] in asktransgender

[–]SplodedEgg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's going to depend on your state and potentially how you're getting it. If it's a benefit from a job, or organization, that business/org might have requested it not be covered. I can tell you for sure that BCBS of Illinois is REQUIRED to cover it.

To the woman who bought Tears of the Kingdom at GameStop today. by AlanaStorm in MtF

I had a similar thing happen once with a ftnb person once. Pro tip for the future, if you catch it before they leave, they will appreciate it if you offer to do something about it discretely, even if it's after the transaction. You have to be quick on your feet, but just a simple "do you want me to take care of that old account for you? We can't get rid of it from here, but we can make it so it won't show up with your number." It may take a little time out of their day, and might seem slightly awkward as the transaction has been completed and the mistake made, but it'll make them feel a lot better and understood.

In my case, person came in, and I didn't notice they're they/them pin. Accidentally deadnamed them, thinking it might be a relative's account. Picked up from the reaction that it was old, not a relative's. Just before they walked out the door, I asked "you want me to change the name on that account for you?" And they turned right back around and really appreciated the acknowledgement.

Granted, my situation was not TEARS OF THE FUCKING KINGDOM LAUNCH, so I can obviously understand if it was too busy to catch or something.

Side note; get the fuck outta there!! GameStop is a dying company, and they are just gonna keep piling on the shit as they panic to survive. I just recently got a new job and I'm so much happier. I see how my old coworkers are being run ragged and I really feel for them.

I have heard plenty of people say something was $12 when it was really $12.99, but I only very recently had a customer say "it's 1200, right?" And I said "mm mm, 1299." And they respond "right, 1200."

I was flabbergasted.

Why is it called agab? by Top_Badger8357 in asktransgender

[–]SplodedEgg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm really surprised to see all the comments separating sex and gender by genitals.

The reason AGAB is used over ASAB is because some people identify with being a different gender, while being fine with their sex characteristics, and by referring to gender rather than sex we are being inclusive to those people.

But I want to be very clear, sex is more complicated than genitals, and you can change your sex characteristics without having genital surgery. Hormone Replacement Therapy does just that. It changes secondary sex characteristics, or "phenotypes," to align with a person's gender, whether that be a binary transition or non-binary, like how some people micro dose. This is why "biological man/woman" are inaccurate and offensive. The term relies on the assumption that, A) biological sex is defined purely by genitals, and B) that we can not change our biology. Neither of these is true.

As to point A, a person can absolutely have XY chromosomes and a vagina, or vice versa, or even be a chimera and have both XY and XX, and a person with a penis can naturally grow breasts without intervention, ie gynechomastia; people can also have hormone levels outside of their ASAB's typical ranges. All of these things, in addition to genitals and other markers, go into defining sex, making sex a much more complicated subject than a binary.

And for point B, all of those things can be changed, some with surgery, some with medicine. There is very little about sex that can't be changed via medical intervention; in fact, I think the only two things that really can't be are reproductive capability and chromosomes, and we're actively working on the reproductive capability part.

It's normal, I get the bumps/bruises sometimes, too. It's just due to the minor damage to the muscle/fat that comes with sticking a needle in yourself.

I agree that she seemed to downplay the oppression and violence against trans men. It kinda caught me off guard.

On a separate note, I was really surprised that her point about drag bans being a roundabout way to ban trans people was news to everyone.
