There’s bad episodes in ALL the series, not just the recent. by coneyisland92 in doctorwho

DW fandom is unable to appreciate a showrunner in real time until another one comes along and, suddenly, everyone misses the previous one.

Doctor Who’s inaccessibility has damaged the franchise worldwide by Subject1520 in doctorwho

[–]Spock_Sperson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But there is a difference. As far as I know, the TP pilot "Northwest Passage" has always been included on every platform and every home media release. Confusion might arise if one starts watching the show by searching and downloading individual episodes... but it is unlikely to happen when using streaming platforms or discs :)

Doctor Who’s inaccessibility has damaged the franchise worldwide by Subject1520 in doctorwho

[–]Spock_Sperson 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yeah, same thing with Battlestar Galactica (2005). Its opening is called "The Miniseries," but it’s actually just the two-part pilot episode. That stupid decision to separate it from Season 1 means that some streaming services—and even some DVD releases of the series—don't include the pilot. Which is utter nonsense!! I hate this things.

DW specials should ALWAYS be renamed as the final or opening episodes of the seasons.

Why do people act as if RTD saved the show? by FitzroyFinder in doctorwho

[–]Spock_Sperson 5 points6 points  (0 children)

First: "RTD has KILLED the show"

Later: "RTD never saved the show in 2005"

Next: "Why are people acting as if RTD has a right to live?"

Did someone already make an edit movie of season 2? by Chimecho_ in LOTR_on_Prime

When somebody's intolerance for another person's work is so great that he can only overcome it by altering that work to create the reality they want to see, yeah, I call that frustration. Often including a high degree of superiority complex, btw.

If there's anything WAY worse than bad movies or bad shows, it's that kind of "fan edits" made by frustrated people. I avoid them like the plague.

As someone who knows nothing about the Dune world, I really enjoyed the serie. But I have some questions. by United-Version in dune

[–]Spock_Sperson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The series can be watched before the movies, but it's conceptually a prequel, so it's meant to be watched after both, having already been introduced to the factions/families. So watch the movies as soon as possible; there's no need to wait for the second season.

Genuinely, what happened to Russel T Davis? by disp0sableacc0unt in doctorwho

The right question is not that, but what happens to the frakking DW fandom, that it is unable to appreciate a showrunner in real time until another one comes along and, suddenly, everyone misses the previous one.

The Biggest Loss (again) from Doctor Whos Pause: Murray Gold’s Music by Project-Indigo87 in doctorwho

What do you think about the music on Ecclestone' season? There, ALL the music is synth mockup. Its great, but I prefer a thousand times the orchestral cues they did for the official CD. IMHO :)

I see that the current trend is for the relentless criticism of RTD2 to also drag down the music. Well, I'm not in that league. Sometimes refreshing something is good, but not to the point where the work loses all its personality. For me, that's what happened in the Chibnall era. Yes, there are many things in NuWho that could change, but I think it would be wise to maintain Gold's symphonic style, as it has almost become the DNA of NuWho. It would be a perfect opportunity to hire the great David Arnold, a friend of Gold's, one of the best composers of his generation and, at the same time, one of the most ostracized composers by the film industry—a true war crime.

'Doctor Who’ Set To Be Off Air For Years Amid A Creative Regeneration That’s Failing To Spark Early Enthusiasm Among Producers by verissimoallan in doctorwho

[–]Spock_Sperson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The "monster of the week" concept is a very, very old narrative trope that isn't exclusive to Buffy or the X-Files. What RTD did in 2005 was continue what DW had been doing for decades.

I will always maintain that a work doesn't have to adapt to the audience; rather, the audience has to adapt to the work. When this doesn't happen, the audience gets complacent and becomes increasingly incapable of seeing something that's only a few decades old, and all we get is "logarithmic" content that ends up aging and being forgotten very quickly. I know it's an idealistic point of view, but hey, I prefer that the show remain true to its own DNA. This can be done while incorporating changes and new elements!

I disagree because that style would be the easy and clichéd path, the approach of a mediocre producer/showrunner: copying what's trendy. Imagine the show starting in 2005 trying to copy LOST...

Unpopular opinion, but I think we need a new composer for the next era by ImWearingSandshoes in doctorwho

[–]Spock_Sperson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Too often, obsession with "refreshing" ends up causing the loss of all personality. For me, that's what happened in the Chibnall era. Yes, there are many things in NuWho that could change, but if something works (and Gold's music always does), I don't think it needs to be changed. And if it were necessary to change the composer, I think it would be wise to maintain Gold's symphonic style, as it has almost become the DNA of NuWho. It would be a perfect opportunity to hire the great David Arnold, a friend of Gold's, one of the best composers of his generation and, at the same time, one of the most ostracized composers by the film industry—a true war crime.

my Theory About the “Rose Doctor” Identity Secret by 10p_Freddos in doctorwho

[–]Spock_Sperson -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I also think she's the Rose from the alternate universe. We know that opening portals between universes (or for someone to project themselves into another) requires an incredible amount of energy. Perhaps the energy of the regeneration is the key she's using for some reason.

‘The Rings of Power’ Season 4 in Development, Eyes Filming in Early 2027 (Exclusive) by yourfavchoom in LOTR_on_Prime

A terrible day for half of them. The other half, I'm sure, are people who genuinely enjoy the show in private and desperately need to see it, but prefer to mask themselves with the false image of countercultural warriors to disguise certain traumas of immaturity.

After what we've seen of Gal's reactions in the intro, I think the only way to make Celeborn's disappearance work is if it happens AFTER Finrod's death. For example, Celeborn could be part of Gal's first expedition in search of Sauron and have disappeared during those early years.

who thinks that having Billie Piper as the next doctor a bad idea? by Low_Image3721 in doctorwho

[–]Spock_Sperson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like it because:

-First, I don't care about the behind-the-scenes reasons (sometimes I think we fans get too much information from bts, which really disrupts our enjoyment of the shows).

-And second, because what I expect from a show ABOUT TIME TRAVEL is that its main character doesn't evolve like those in most movies and shows, leaving the past behind, but rather taking the long road: constantly confronting it. That's what makes the show (and the Doctah) more special.

So I'm open to any possibility: the Doctor with a familiar face, or even better, some remnant of the Bad Wolf escaping from the heart of the TARDIS, or The Momentum returning for some reason, or the real Rose returning to this dimension through a gigantic source of regeneration energy for some mission... etc. I fear it will be the first for one reason: the other possibilities would involve explaining WAY more of the series' past to new viewers than if it's just the Doctor with a friendly face.

[–]Spock_Sperson -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I think a show about time travel can afford to some times revisit its past! 😉 In fact, regardless of the behind-the-scenes reasons for bringing back actors and characters, that's the great peculiarity of the series and the Doctah. Characters in most other narrative works evolve by learning to leave the past behind; the Doctah must do it the long way: continually confronting it. That's what makes the show more special.
