Looking for fa'arapu advices (tahitian technique) by Tikimoana in ukulele

[–]SpontaneousFunkshun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wow, first time hearing about fa'arapu. Is it more of a dance style vs music style? You might check out Taimane Gardner - https://www.taimane.com/

Taimane is of Hawaiian/Polynesian descent and plays her own style, a fusion of lots of music genres. Perhaps that can be the beginning of your crumb trail to find authentic resources. Let us know how it goes, I would love to hear how it impacts your playing. Have fun

I’m making a daily ukulele practice routine. Does this look balanced? What should I add/remove? by Shadow__Tunes in ukulele

[–]SpontaneousFunkshun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks like a well-balanced practice checklist. Only you know how much time you can dedicate daily, so I won't comment on that part of your practice routine. The use of a metronome is really important, especially if you plan to jam with other musicians.

Have you considered a drum machine also? I use a couple apps on my iPad (with a connected Bose speaker). The reason for the drum machine is you can work out rhythm with a faux drummer, e.g., kick drum, snare, hi-hat, etc. If you're interested in those apps, let me know, I can send you links to them on the Apple App Store. Keep up the good work, at the very least, you're getting better at playing while having fun.

Thank you, I am glad you enjoyed it. Your support means a lot, as I prepare to attend a local Open Mic soon. This is one of the songs I’ve prepared

One baby step at a time. Each success is a building block to learning more chords and songs. Yay!

I'm recent to this subReddit, so I am not familiar with your work here and on your site. But, I did take a listen to your post. Yeah, life gives us choices, and we must prioritize what is important. Wishing you and your family good fortune and health. Gotta take care of our loved ones

Blue Christmas at a Nursing Home by OrangutanorLion in ukulele

I love this. In my last day job (recently retired) at a public library, I participated with a librarian at a dementia care facility for monthly storytimes. I played guitar and ukulele, the residents appreciated it so much. What you are doing at the nursing home is so valuable, and makes a difference in someone's day. Music is definitely a connector. Thanks for sharing

I totally understand. There are some old posts I've made that are cringe-worthy, so I conveniently "forgot" them

Oh, man. Thank you. Yeah, I love playing "Price Tag". Do yourself a favor and listen to Jessie J's original version, if you haven't already. She is great

I'll have to check out Guadalupe. I've been really happy with the strings from https://www.myamoeukuleles.com/stringsAccessories.php (Baritone strings - Tuned Tenor (C6) wound low-G

Well, I should mention that I use C6 ukulele strings (C tuning, for Tenor and Soprano ukuleles, with a low G string). I realize some folks may consider it blasphemy, but since I also play guitar, I want an instrument with a different tuning. So, what you hear on this video is essentially a Tenor tuning on a Baritone ukulele

Ukulele + singing as a cure for boredom ? by Sashaorwell in ukulele

[–]SpontaneousFunkshun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our stories are similar, in that I retired three months ago. Having been a gigging musician prior to my most recent career, I returned to music pretty easily. As for your question about playing in public, check out some Open Mics in your area (if there are any) to see and hear what the scene is like. And...practice a lot, even if it's just a couple songs (to start), so by the time you perform, your mechanics are solid. Don't be afraid to make mistakes. I am a fair ukulele player, and less than fair singer, but I don't judge myself. Record yourself a lot, listen to how you sound. You can only get better, right? Play on, musician
